Outlets are running damage control in various capacities, including PCGamer (granted, with some caveats). So far it seems like a lot of cope from the developer, like even they had no faith in what they released.

The narrative being spun is exactly what I thought it would be: We never wanted lots of players, we always wanted a niche audience!

Also, from the article,

Came here to check out the sentiment, I played the tutorial myself and got kicked from the game when I was done. It's at 95k players and will most likely hit 100k. I believe that the game is going to be a failure, but thinking it's going to be on the level of Concord is stupid.
Concord was a comical flop with a 100 player peak because it was paid.

This game is free so people will try it out of curiosity.

And became exposed by the game awards, so like i said before: of course the game gonna be blasted in the ass by overcharge of connections.

Probably the best take about how Geoff Keely fucking ruined this game XD

The devs apparently wanted to shadow drop the game, but Geoff thought it was SOOOO revolutionary that he had to show it at the Game Awards. Probably hyped the devs up, making them think the wider gaming community would love it.

Yeah, so I played a few more games. It's a generic shooter, doesn't do anything crazy but it's very clearly not finished.

The map feels like it was supposed to have mobs you kill for the currency. I think you were supposed to have one more teammember instead of just 3, and the performance, even though I'm hitting high frames, feels really weird.

The worst thing that could've happen to the game was being shown in the GA like that. Geoff trolled them and you cant convince me otherwise.

The F2P shooter model depends on whales buying skins right? If that's the case aren't you shooting yourself in the foot by making all the characters so fucking ugly?

No one's going to drop $20 on a skin for Lilith Gigajaw or hypernose niggerjew.

can't help themselves, its scorpion and frog shit, Liblefties just have to do it, they just have to make them ugly or make them black or w/e diversity shit.

Overwatch was an accident, they made the women hot on accident, if they could go back and do it now, they'd be ugly.

Is there any form of meta progression for this game other than the battle pass? Like COD you could level your account and prestige etc…

How can anyone seeing a trailer like this think the game is any good?
It would be bad as a mobile release. Look at those graphics, and the console movement and aim in first person, omfg.

Its like they are intentionally making games so Fortnite can look good by comparison.

Can they release it again in a couple weeks? Im at work this week im sure all gamers are. Trust me, re-release it later it won't flop again I promise

They are completely misinterpreting the purpose of putting the trailer there.
Quick hype, cash in on steam hoping players exceed the magical 2 hour deadline for refunds, push some minor fixes to make the game seem to get support still, then let it die on version 1.0.3 and taking as much money with you as possible.

I guarantee you the devs were already let go under NDA, or informed of their termination date ahead of time.
Nobody is expecting this game to have an actual sustainable playerbase, nobody is delusional enough to think this game cracked the code when even a lobotomized gorilla will get bored by this slop after 30 minutes.

So it's already in the running for one of the 100 worst rated games on Steam, with people complaining about crashes, disconnects, and other bugs. Meanwhile once a bunch of the sponsored streamers finished their obligated sponsor paid gameplay hours, the player base has already fallen off to half of what it started at as people in the US have been getting home from work and school and not playing it. It may not be a concord-like, but it certainly seems to be a concord-lite.
