Highguard - Concord 2.0?

disconcertingly common chink w...
Well, they spent millions for something the western games industry would have happily funded themselves.

It’s a victory, but a decisive tang strategic victory, y’know?

Even their fucking website was outsourced. I'm starting to wonder if there's a single in-house programmer involved in this game or if it was a group of artists and HR people trying to make a game to push microtransactions on consumers and distributing the profits between the least amount of internal people by outsourcing everything.

It's been on the back of my head for a while, but now I've realized what the way the team talks about their game reminds me of: late NFT peddlers and web3 snake oil salesmen. Sobel's screed about gamers killing innovation by not buying highly monetized slop wouldn't feel out of place in those circles.
Considering how many "outsource managers" were on the team, I doubt any real work was done anywhere in the United States. They had that one concept artist lady who cranked out a ton of concepts and that was probably it. Rest of it was probably done in like India or Indonesia or something. Which means it was probably vibe coded with chatgpt too.

Fucking knew it. There was 0 chance this goes on last at the TGAs without a fat check getting cut to someone. Knew this game wasn't the product of a bunch of humble, ambitious indie devs either. This had paint by numbers corpo slop written all over it.

This is the source which supposedly broke the news first. The bulk of the article is hidden behind a paywall (AFAIK there's no way to circumvent a substack paywall), so there's really no way of knowing what other information is contained within.

Games journos continue to uphold their reputation of being slimy faggots.

Here's a summarization via another outlet, which doesn't add much but mentions TiMi Studio Group as the main subsidiary backing the game. A cursory search for their other projects is unsurprising.
This coming out so quickly after it appears the game's gone totally belly up screams that these fags knew Tencent was behind this but were keeping quiet because they're either in on the grift or wanting to be.

I wonder when they'll realize that they could just pass Quinn a few hundred to suck off a handful of guys every few years to keep overhead low. It'd accomplish just about the same thing.
How is that low? Sounds like plenty of head!
I wonder how his lover Kojima-san feels about that
Turns out, it's a very elaborate and autistic ploy to avenge Nanjing with a borrowed knife

Jeff was paid a shit load to promote it and I am sure was "Shocked" it failed.
lol I was wondering about this in particular. I sincerely doubt he runs his own twitter account (people like him have "people" for such tawdry tasks). Do you think he even knew the game flopped before the internet collectively started laughing at its failure? Do you think he gave a shit for even a moment once he heard?

The guntguarding narrative has begun.
"Tencent backs tons of games"
"Investors don't have any control"
Gag me with a fork, I can't believe how stupid they think people are.

I can. Partly because they're right (a lot of people are really fucking stupid), but also because their arrogance knows no bounds. All this means is we're going to keep seeing this hilarity happen again and again because they think the fuckups are all just a "one-off" and they can just keep lying 'til they score a winner. As an added bonus, we get to watch these liars get ripped to shreds over and over too. It's not like they learn from their failures or anything.

It's fucking great.

This might actually explain the tone-deaf tweets trying to hype up the game prior to release (miscarriage) of Highguard. If chinks paid him for promotion, he could've had an intern post that shit on his behalf.
Except even fucking youtubers are supposed to reveal their sponsorships, otherwise they'd get in big trouble. Geoff can't be stupid enough to do something like this, right?
And I know that TGA is a shill show, I just didn't think he'd be shilling personally rather than by proxy (the show).

We're literally having Marathon launching off the back of this within weeks, and the story is very much the same. Just like Concord and Highguard. Every single one is equally controversial.
Marathon isn't fairing as badly because it's both a known franchise (even though it's nothing like its predecessors) and has big name of Bungie attached to it (as maligned as it is at this point). But it's worth keeping in mind that it's a $40 game, not a free one, which was the main reason Highguard even got nearly 100k concurrent on Steam to begin with. Otherwise it would've been another Concord with hardly anyone playing it at any given point.
So it's going to be interesting how fast Marathon chokes and dies in comparison, we'll see how many hardcore Bungie dick-riders there are with this release.
BTW saw someone dub Marathon as "Art Raiders" and I nearly fucking died laughing

People don't want this shit.

"Hey guys, I'm representative of a company with close ties to the Chinese government. I've noticed that you're a small indie studio with no prior track record. Here's a hundred million dollars to make the game of your dreams. "
"Thank you Mr. Chinaman. We've always dreamed about creating the most supreme microtransaction slop with bland characters and zero redeeming qualities. We will spend the money wisely".
"Perfect! I will now contact Mr. Keighley - whom I also have zero control over - and throw like a dozen million dollars his way. Maybe he will be so kind to advertise your game at his event. Damn I wish there was a better way of doing this."

I wanted to be a concept artist in middle school because I kept seeing shit that was cooler than the final product
I still wish the PS2 Shinobi reboot had been even half as good as the concept art.

Can anyone actually name a scenario even just one over the last twelve years where tranny soydevs actually won and owned the chuds?
In AAA, absolutely not. Even if the champions of woke actually bought the content they simp for, there simply isn't enough of them to match the budgets of these projects.

On the indie scene I'd say something like Date Everything could be considered a success, but not a bragworthy one. It's player numbers are nothing to write home about, but it has an estimated 200-300k owners so it probably netted the devs a comfy profit.

So if you can still call yourself indie while receiving millions in private investment what does the term even mean? How is being funded by Tencent any different to being bought and backed by Sony or Microsoft?

At least being funded by China explains why all the female characters are flat-chested.

you laugh now. but this is how we take down china.

wasting their money to make shitty ass games that fail MINUTES after release.
imagine if every week we had a highguard tier failure and china's the one footing the bill.
The CCP couldn't handle it

So what "indie" usually means is a studio not owned by a publisher and I'll provide some examples
Bioware and Maxis are owned by EA
Treyarch, Infinity Ward, Raven, etc. are owned by Activision
Insomniac, Naughty Dog, Santa Monica Studio, etc. are owned by Sony

For Indie studios that publish through big publishers
Platinum Games is a private company that has had funding from publishers to publish games like Nintendo paying for Bayonetta 2(and 3 I think?)
Arrowhead Game Studios got funding from Sony for Helldivers 2

Then you've got your smaller indie studios that are mostly independently funded
The guy that made Super Meat Boy, Binding of Isaaac, Mewgenics
The guy that made Vampire Survivors
Team Cherry with Hollow Knight

And then Indie studios that get investments from companies but still publish on their own
Build A Rocket Boy with Mindseye
Wildlight with Highguard
Cloud Imperium Games with Star Citizen
Larian with Baldurs Gate 3

And then of course you've got publishers focused entirely on publishing indie titles that may or may not have their own internal dev studio
Team17
Devolver Digital
Annapurna Interactive

The problem is that an indie studio can mean anything from a dev team of 1-10 people that is entirely self funded. Or a 300 person self funded studio that's been around for 20 years and built themselves up into that. Or a studio that's put together overnight with 100 million in funding. This is why that retarded simp developer who fled from twitter was laughably stupid for trying to say there wasn't anything "corporate" about Wildlight when it was a big studio that just came out of nowhere compared to Larian which has been around for 30 years.

The people to whom the website was outsourced, aka Code32, posted this:

This is just a guess, but wildlight may have failed to pay the maintenance fees to Code32, which led to the site being suspended even though the hosting and domain remain operational. I imagine they've given up on promoting the game and just stopped paying. In this case, the message to contact for assistance is directed at Wildlight, the client. But who knows.

Given the lack of communication, maybe all of the social media staff got sacked too. The discord jannies are still working tirelessly though, so they must be getting paid, right?
