Game is sitting at 97% positive reviews though a lot of them are meme reviews Screenshot_20250904-082342.Steam~2.webp

I came here to say that I have never played Hollow Knight (or any metroidvania for that matter),
But now that I see what kind of impact the sequel has on the gaming community, literally 30 minutes after it released.
I might actually check those games out.
I played it for the first time about a month ago but dropped it after a few hours. It's not a bad game, but it quite literally is the title of this thread. It's incredibly derivative, especially when it comes to the lore e.g. exploring a destroyed kingdom, darkness (mold) has engulfed the land, the shards of the past blah blah. There's a few gay characters for extra woke points as well. I think the overabundance of Dark Souls clones made me lose interest along with the newgrounds artstyle, but I get why a lot of people enjoy it.

There's a streamer I watch who loves Metroidvanias, though it's not his main thing. His community and wife finally got him to play Hollow Knight after years of trying to get him to do it.

He basically came out of it saying that it's probably one of the best Metroidvanias he's ever played.

Like he was honestly surprised how good it was.
Mind sharing the stream where he goes into it?

Apparently there's something about 3 man teams making great little indie gems. Project Wingman had a 3 person team as well and I enjoyed it a lot more than Ace Combat 7. Cold War is still the single best combat flight sim level I have played.

Hollow Knight is a very fun, very polished game. Even at full price ($15) it's worth picking up, and definitely worth getting if there is a sale on. It might not be for everyone but I think it's worth a look.

Now if the store would just load so I could try the new one...
All I'll say is, make sure to at least get to greenpath, the second area of the game. Go left after fighting the first major boss and get your first spell, and you'll find it to the left in the big room.

if you get to greenpath and still think the game isn't for you, that's absolutely fair. But for a lot of people, greenpath is where the game gets it's hooks into you.

I was hooked the moment I heard that greenpath soundtrack the first time. That combined with the visuals made the game feel way more beautiful than it objectively should be. Up until that point it felt like a slog and I was just playing it because one of my friends begged me to.

So, is Hollow knight actually that good? That 75000 players started the game within 1 minute of it's release on top of breaking steam? Have I not been playing peak?

I was hooked when I got to Greenpath and the Dung Defender theme kept me hooked.

It's still there, try it Russian style if you want to, these guys clearly aren't short on cash.
The game is fully offline, runs as a plain executable, no DRM of any sort.

The amount of secondaries you can find by just looking trough the reviews is absurd.
People that have never touched hollow knight are jumping on the hype train and leaving meme reviews after 5 minutes played.

Kill secondaries. Behead secondaries.

Piracy is only based and moral when the company does something shitty or sucks in general like Nintendo. I have no reason to be spiteful to the Hollow Knight devs.

Modern AAA wokeslop: 20k players if you're lucky
Lovingly made Indie games: fucking murders Steam from the hype

Haven't played AAA for many years and I've been eating good with minimal problems, also been saving a ton of money in the process considering I rarely buy anything more than $25
Yeah any time anyone says modern gaming sucks and it's dead I always think about how indie games are actually very decent and literally and figuratively are pretty much just like the old days. It's just AAA games that suck these days, people that always complain about gaming being horrible today should just cut AAA games out for the most part and just focus on indie games and you'll be a lot happier and save money in the process.

Games are so bloated and huge today that I really don't even want to bother with these 100gb "realistic" games, just give me some good old fashion retro style game, you can't put gameplay quality on the sidelines in favor of "story" and visuals as if you're trying to make a movie, the gameplay has to be solid in these retro style games fundamentally.

If you like metroidvanias, it's quite frankly one of the best ones in my opinion. First area of the game isn't its greatest showing however. Like people said, play through Greenpath, the second area. If you don't like it by then, then you probably won't care for it.

Is this game even going to be any good like do I just buy this nonsense to see why the autists are shrieking like monkeys at the zoo?

I felt the same way about Deltarune but didnt buy it because I have never once enjoyed a game the internet insists is fantastic.

Maybe I just hate video games.

I can't help but notice that Silksong already starts us in a very greenpath-like area. I wonder why that is...

It's because these studios are either owned or bought by publicly traded companies which are legally required to be as greedy as possible.

Team cherry, a privately owned business, self publishing on steam, owned by valve, a privately owned business, means you can get away with wasting your money on pointless endeavors like customer retention and creating a legacy. That would never fly with the shareholders.

Do what smart people do and wait a month or however long it takes for the hype to die down and see if people still think it's good.

Deltarune is gay faggot slop

As for Silksong if you aren't sure about it watch a stream or if you do buy it play for an hour and a half and if it doesn't hook you refund it.

Simple as.

Deltarune is gay faggot slop
I refuse to believe it's slop, it's a yiiklike for gay faggots.
Slop is meant to play itself safe, extremely bland and forgettable on everything but the characters, which needs to be toned down to be exaggeratedly queer, diverse and have no personality trait aside of their own diverse identity as niggerfaggot.

I'd argue that story and "lore" comes second in games like this, gameplay is always first. Hollow Knight having any story or lore is just a formality. Like I said in my previous post, AAA gaming is so up it's own ass with "story and themes" that the gameplay just isn't fun anymore, leaving AAA stuff like that behind and playing something like Hollow Knight is a breath of very welcomed fresh air. There's metroidvanias like Blasphemous that are way more derivative of Dark Souls than Hollow Knight which at least has a fairly unique art style.

Isn't Deltarune a sequel to Undertale? Those games are very autistic and the fanbase is also very autistic. I wouldn't compare it to stuff like Hollow Knight lol
