The live fish though, that's messed up. That's just cruel. I mean, isn't it still pretty fresh if you quickly kill the fish before slicing it up? I'll leave eating live fish up to the bears. And other fish.

The cruelty of it seems absolutely pointless, and I see no reason to do this unless being pointlessly cruel is, in fact, the actual point.

Some years ago I saw an article where a Chinese person said they didn't like dog meat because it was heavy and greasy.

American Vietnamese eat dog too, at lease they used to when I was a kid. (doubtful that they changed) One of my friends growing up said they'd eat it on special occasions like birthdays.

I don't know about you, but to me, for whatever reason, that fish video is much worse than the one of them forcing the live octopus on the grill. Something about picking pieces off of an animal still moving and half fried is just gross as fuck..

A lot of the Japanese stuff in here is needlessly contrarian - surely a lot of these dishes would have originated back when Shinto was the primary creed of Japan, right? So why the fuck would animists be so wrapped up in the idea of causing pain to living creatures?

Weird people.

I'm wondering if the cooked alive animals is a recent thing because I can't find any information on their history.

There are also drunken shrimp, at least the live sort, served after being intoxicated with liquor but still quite alive. Other than the potential health issues, I don't see much ethical qualm with it. They're little more than bugs. I'd probably try this just for the sheer hell of it, but probably would not be that interested in food moving around as I ate it.

If you've eaten raw oysters, they're basically alive, too. They don't do much in the way of moving around, though.

I had the cooked version of drunken shrimp (well prawns) in Hawaii. It was awesome. Though the person with me had never seen any seafood that wasn't a frozen pre-bread, so watching me rip the heads and legs off and pile the shells up apparently traumatized them slightly.

I just recently read at argument that vegans can still eat oysters because their nerve systems are so basic they might as well be plants. Huh, the more you know.

That reminds me of when my aunt took me to Trop World and we went to this buffet. There was a huge pile of what I think were crawfish. I was so nauseated looking at them. We did not grow up eating seafood. My mom was utterly repulsed by it and believed the mercury hype. But honestly, the smell alone is enough to make me want to hurl. I have eaten shrimp on occasion. But if gives me a weird feeling in my mouth that I don't like. I'm not allergic. But there's some kind of heavy almost irritation. It's just not very pleasant.

But people will sit there and break apart dead shellfish like it's nothing. I'm a food coward. Give me my meat already faceless and dismembered.

Of course I have to remember that I've probably eaten plenty of bugs while foraging wild fruit. This is why I tend to stay away from mulberries now. You never know if you've washed all the tiny bugs off. I did eat a ton of wineberries last month right off the bushes though. Lord knows what extra protein I might have gotten. but at least if you remain ignorant to what might be on your wild unwashed fruit you can pretend it never happened.
