Don't listen to these faggots they're just trying to confuse you, drink some Earl Grey and you'll be fine.

+1 to green tea. Best tea to choose if you want the caffeine + L-theanine combination, which blunts the negative effects of caffeine.

Trial & error is pretty much a necessity because there are lots of tea types. My personal favorites are Fukamushi (deeply steamed) or Kamairi (pan fried) partly because they tend to be cheap and still taste good, but YMMtotallyV. Matcha is the most handy one because it's basically instant tea, but I noticed the flavor goes away pretty fast due to its powdered form.

Any tips of getting into it and maybe successfully replacing soda?
Don't add sweet anything to the tea. Sugar promotes the secretion of insulin then ghrelin (hunger promoting hormone which makes you 🥁..... hungry). Similar story with milk because of its lactose content. Heavy cream is okay though.

Artificial sweeteners aren't good either because they have similar effects even though the mechanism is unclear. Also, feeding the sugar addiction with fake sugar is probably a bad idea. Please don't be deceived "low/zero calorie" or "natural" sweeteners, natural zero sugar zero calorie whatever can still have undesirable hormonal/psychological effects.

Sweeteners are for gay fat goyslop muching trannies and women.

Silver Needle- Kind of spendy, but very nice as a treat. Delicate flavor, but it's white tea so people sometimes scald it not knowing they aren't supposed to use water that's too hot with any tea, but especially not this kind.
Warning about any white tea: the flavor is so subtle that if you have anything resembling hard water from your tap and you don't just use distilled water, the flavor of the water will overwhelm the barely detectable flavor of this shit. And you might as well just heat up your calcium filled water and drink that and pretend it's tea because otherwise you will get nothing from that shit.

I prefer a good herbal or chai tea with some steamed milk and a bit of honey. If I have a traditional tea, like orange pekoe, I usually just brew it with water. I like the green tea with bergamot oil and some honey.

lately i have been drinking exclusively oolong tea, usually multiple cups a day. i used to put 2 tsp of raw sugar in it before i realized that it fucked with my stomach, and started just drinking it plain which tastes better even though it's not sweet. i've only found the cheap boxed shit so far but i want to find some loose-leaf that will probably be higher quality.

The world of loose leaf tea is a broad one, so not all oolong teas are alike. I've heard good things about Floating Leaves' loose tea, but I haven't personally bought from them.

I'm partial to flavored Milk Oolong from Republic of Tea because I'm a degenerate. The basic one is also known as Jin Xuan and has a light, buttery, vegetal taste. I found some Jin Xuan in my cupboard I bought from Zerama about two years ago, so I'm gonna have that now.

ETA: Just finished a cup made with 3g of loose leaf in a gaiwan. It's fine, not my favorite, as I expected. Slightly vegetal, a little sweet. Not really getting the melon scent they claim it has. It's pleasant, but boring.

@Super Guido thanks for the recommendations. i think i need to educate myself on the world of teas and experiment a bit. at my old job we had a really nice black tea from spirit teas that had a very rich flavor, but was much more mellow than an english breakfast or similar kind of black tea. i think i may have tried spirit's oolong as well, which was delicious. i recommend checking them out if you're able.

Don't mind if I do! For black teas, I like Yunnan and I think Lao Shan, but I got that one from a company that doesn't exist anymore and I don't have the package so I'm not completely sure. It looks like the website you linked has a Lao Shan tea that is also sold on Verdant Tea - they have entire sections for specific farmers, and Mr. He is one of them.

There are green and oolong teas in Yunnan and Lao Shan since those are parts of China rather than a type of tea. I have only tried black Yunnans and a black Lao Shan, however.

One of my favorites recently is Genmaicha, a Japanese green mixed with roasted brown rice. It smells a bit like popcorn
Have you ever had barley tea? It's also called boricha and mugicha. It's good stuff if you want something toasty but don't want caffeine since it's not from the tea plant or mate.

Anyone have a good source for quality matcha at a non-insane price? It's actually not that expensive on a per-cup basis when you consider you only use about a gram or maybe two at a time if you're feeling like a stronger cup.

It seems you usually want ceremonial grade for drinking although you can get away with culinary grade to some extent, but the good stuff is really expensive.

I recently got a beginner kit, and there's a moderately autistic ritual to it, but not anywhere near as involved as the one for puer tea.

I have recently bought some nice loose leaf black tea, could be an English Breakfast blend. It's so different than the shit you get in the teabags, even "Twinings" which I used to think was good tea (their loose leaf is good, not amazing, but good enough).

There is also a clear right answer to the milk/water first question that anglos seem to debate over. If you are going to add milk, you want the water to be very hot (basically boiling) so it releases the tannin in the tea which goes very well with the milk, so adding cold tea first would ruin this.

I'm starting to get into green teas (not matcha, fuck matcha), and really enjoying how each pour tastes. I seem to enjoy the second pour the best! It's also crazy how the fact you can reuse the tea multiple times makes tea that is otherwise very expensive...actually not that outrageous.

i know you fellas know where the good lapsang souchong is, hook me up. i've been ordering the taylor brand online but that can't be the real good stuff
