Just came back from visiting friends and family in the Pacific Northwest (which was a great trip). However, I’ve been feeling introspective about the whole region afterwards. Having lived half my childhood in the PNW and on-and-off again during the last decade for school and work, it’s surreal how much it’s changed. I can’t tell if it’s just me getting older or if the entire region has transformed into something… else (I strongly suspect the latter). The place I come from does not really exist anymore. It’s peak first-world whining, but I wonder if this is how South African expats and even Syrians feel about their birth/ancestral homelands as well?
Thinking out loud, I wonder if in the future it’s better to build a life for yourself elsewhere or stay/return to try and make your birth/homeland better? Like, if I was offered a job in the PNW, I don’t know if I would even take it (despite my personal history). I guess this is something all migrants think about…
