you only get one life. You’re almost 30 and what you’ve built here is truly unique and I think freedom of speech is so important. But it’s a big burden to carry alone and from things you’ve said previously you no longer feel fulfilled by it or enjoy it - it’s supposed to be fun.
Who you have a family with is the single biggest choice you’ll ever make. Choose wisely, and go for it. I dont care if I’m power levelling here but my kids and family have brought me more joy than anything else in my life, by a very long way. Everything else is unimportant if you’ve got your health, basic stability, your freedom and your family.
Burnout is a bastard. Step back, delegate to someone/some people you trust. Talk to a professional (GP/therapist) if you feel you need it. Have a break. Concentrate on your health. Find a job that’s bearable. Have some kids.
I’ll be gutted if you close the farms down, but I understand. Your priorities change as you get older.
Whatever you decide, don’t be held back or weighed down by us. It’s your life and you get one shot at it.

I don't think freedom of speech is dead, but it is definitely going through a hard time. Eventually a new type of censorship resistant forum will emerge on the darkweb and start the fight anew, don't sweat closing the site. Things evolve.

I haven't read every post in this thread, so I may say some redundant things, but fuck it:
I've been a member of this site since 2014. Even though I don't post much, I log in every day. I do really love this site, even though there are many aspects I don't love about it. It's one of the few places left on the Internet that still feels like the old Internet. You can still recognize who people are, users have personality, you still see long thought-out posts instead of short sentences for upboats. Yeah, you do see people sperg out over meaningless stickers, but at least it doesn't hide posts or rank posts based on popularity. When I first joined, this kind of site was a dying breed. Now, it's almost extinct. The large portion of the Internet has been cannibalized by behemoth corporate websites like Youtube, Facebook, Reddit, etc. I don't think it would be an exaggeration to say that most people no longer even visit websites that are not owned by a large corporation. To me, this place was like a refuge, and has become even more so. It's the closes thing to a social media site I visit.
These days, it's nearly impossible to talk avoid politics, and this place is no exception. It's hard to believe there was a time where politics wasn't on the forefront of everyone's mind, yet it was the case only 7-8 years ago. This site definitely had a political edge since the beginning, but a lot of the lolcows were apolitical. Deagle Nation, MylarBalloonFan, Jay Geis, JustinRPG, even Chris himself tugboat and tomgirling aside. The political atmosphere was definitely a bit different. I discovered this site when Ferguson and Gamergate were still raging, and coincidentally in my mind those two events were what definitely accelerated political polarization on the Internet. This site, while definitely more pro-GG than not, was also kind of a refuge from that. Most people's political opinions were kind of center, center-left, but SJW's and moral busybodies were despised. That alone, when a lot of my friends were going down the wokescold route, made it a revelation.
Trump changed the atmosphere of this site (as he did for all sites). During the campaign, he was so bizarre and so forthright that it was kind of hard not to be enticed if not frightened. I'll admit that I got swept up even though I always had my misgivings. It changed the website a lot too, as the site became a lot more explicitly right-wing, even if not exactly alt-right. A&H had become a much more important board, and the talk had become a lot more one-sided. Even though I was largely sympathetic, it had become a bit more like an echo chamber that we had become to despise. I now recognize it's because this is the only place that is like this on the Internet any more, as pretty much everywhere else had deplatformed dissent. Even though my political opinions change over time, one constant is that I will always believe in the freedom of speech. The fact that this is one of the few communities that safeguards that is incredibly valuable. My own views have became more left-wing over time, partly through personal experience, partly through reading and soul-searching, but I still take this place over anywhere else just because you aren't stifled and can speak your mind.
I will say though, the past few weeks have been pretty eye-opening just how blindly loyal some of the userbase is to Trump, especially with regards to Section 230. The country is literally in the middle of a pandemic and burning to the ground, and he is more upset about Twitter than anything else. Fucking look at this thread where Biden proposes the same thing, and everyone (rightfully) calls him out on it. But when Daddy throws a shitfit and wants to take away the very thing that makes this website possible, you say it's not a big deal. If I were in Null's position, I would definitely be driven up the wall.
The site has changed, arguably for the worse, but I still do love it, and I'll be crushed if it ever goes away. It's one of the few bastions of a free and authentic Internet culture. I understand why it would be draining to continue working on this, and I would understand if you got rid of it, but do know that it meant something to a lot people.

Way too much dick-sucking in that thread. The problem is obvious : great effort and risks taken, with little to no money as reward.
On one hand, you say you want internet money (understable). On another hand, you think way too highly of yourself and you refuse to market yourself outside the Farms.
If it was just a fun side project, I'd understand. But reading your take on it, you're too afraid to admit you want to make money out of it.
Business are build to make money. You have a community, you're semi-famous, you have a platform that works well... You also manage to create something people actually fear across the web. It's not that hard to make money out of that. You just need to fully adapt to what internet has become and market yourself better.
I'm not a pro at internet finance but :
- Run ads if you can, stop considering Farms like a baby you want to protect from internet 2.0.
- Insist on the importance of donations. Put it in the front page, launch yearly funds campaign, like the wikipedia CEO is doing. Insist on that shit.
- Build a brand, put some picture of you with your dog on instagram (no joke, it works), present yourself as a defensor of free thought (even if you care less about it now, it's just marketing). Basically, market Farms outside of Farms (you suck at it bro, let's admit it).
- Start a patreon, not for Farms, but with your name on it. "Hello, I'm Joshua Null, I fight for freedom of thought and speech for years, I manage a famous dissident community over the web, I need your support". Done.
- There's not a single interview of yourself on youtube where you present yourself, speak about you a little, the problems you had in the past... It's how someone market his ass nowadays. You need that, you need to make yourself known a little more.
- Create a twitter account (yes I know) and shit talk people you don't like, create a dynamic around yourself, share knowledge you have about building community, managing it, moderation... Create a story telling if you have to.
- The list goes on.
People way less known than you earn their fill of money through instagram or twitter. You need to think about a business plan and make it work. If everything above works accordingly, you will have all the money you want. It's always the same problem with internet nerds : they suck at marketing.
If you ever want to build a family, have children, you want to be someone they can look up to. You need to become way more than the weird nerd that manage the most dangerous community of the web.

Not going to try and nuthug you since we've never interacted and I'm a relative newfag, but did want to add my voice to say that I appreciate the work that's gone in to allowing this place to exist and I'd be real sad to see the farms disappear. I live in a country that would probably see me in court for hate speech just for making fun of ugly trannies if it were on any other site but this one, and it is truly amazing to me that such a place as this exists on the internet and I have been enjoying it immensely. I'm on the bandwagon of taking a break and think about handing over the reigns to someone you trust.

If you want advice from someone who has a Thread here and the "Saurons Eye" as you put it and was able to start a wonderful family, its this. Quit what you are doing now, go home and start fresh. Get a new job outside of the internet, save up some money. Humble yourself. Get some IRL peoples and go to the gym.
When you feel like its fun again to laugh at people on the internet, do it in doses.
You'll meet a woman near your age thatll accept you for who you are regardless of the shit out there on you. If I can, you can too.

I'm quite a bit younger than you, Josh, and perhaps in ten years time I'll be staring down the same abyss you're staring down. You've exhausted such an absurd amount of options that I have nothing to suggest that you have probably not already tried. I would just suggest to let the show end rather than let it run for 5 more seasons and just have it deteriorate for the sake of having it up. The sacrifices you have made to keep this place up have been nothing short of legendary, despite any personal failings you have. As it goes, you might be a faggot, but you are our faggot.
