I'm getting too old for this shit.

@Null, as someone older than you and tasked with dealing with A&H, I feel you. Selfishly, I do want the site to continue. I enjoy writing my long ass rants where I can't post them anywhere else as I'd be at risk of being fired or worse. Its a nice outlet I have, and a connection with like minded people. Well, not the shit I have to clean up after, but that's another story.

I'd be remiss to say you have to do what you feel. Your age is only going to make you grow more tired. The 30s, early 30s especially, these days can be some pretty dark times as its basically looking at your life and seeing what you've done. I know it was hard for me when I first turned 30. Its why suicide rate for men this age is at its highest, because it seems hopeless if you feel you've accomplished nothing and felt trapped. Not gonna lie, its probably going to last a year or two at least. Still haunts me now.

I think part of the reason is that the riots and lockdown have made things very intense, and there's the heat up of the politics where it basically feels like everyone's back is against the wall and forced to support the mainstream. Since this is one of the only places left where you can speak unfiltered, its attracting a lot of people. Especially for the riots. It feels like opening your mouth wrong will get you shot. I however, think this time will pass. It won't maintain this pace forever and will eventually calm down.

But yes, the age of the lolcow is over, since everyone is putting all their dumbshit out on the internet. And you're right, if we put up an average person, we could literally incinerate them by looking.

I have to say, I've lived through the rise and fall of SA. I was a prominent member there. I think (?) I'm a prominent member here, so I've been on the downward trends of forums. But you won't ever go lower than Lowtax. In the end, you have to do what you feel fufills your life. I feel like free speech is a noble cause, but you have to understand the reality that pretty much everyone on Earth will go for a comfortable lie than an uncomfortable truth. I do think we're in a culture that values the comfortable lie too much and prioritizes comfort, which is why you see so much opposition to free speech in general. It feels hopeless, but paradigms can shift in moments.

Selfishly, I'd rather this stick around since like many, this is the last place I can freely talk. But it would be morally wrong to ask that someone run it and make themselves miserable.

If you do decide to close eventually, at least give us time to link up and form our own places. Whether they last or not will be on us.

I’ve really appreciated this site and your dedication to keeping it going at great personal expense.

Over the past year or two there’s been a shift and it’s really noticeable, especially in Beauty Parlour. It used to be fun, just pointing and laughing at the silliness of it all, but the atmosphere has changed. Posters get dog piled for having a different perspective or opinion. It actually gets hostile. I’ve basically stopped commenting now because it’s just become Mean Girls. It kind of feels like the older users have been pushed off the site by newer, more aggressive posters. The tone has changed. It feels angry and bitter and aggressive which is not what it used to be. It’s not as fun anymore.

Null, my man, don't ever compare yourself to Lowtax. Lowtax and everything that happened with SA was because Lowtax is an unintelligent faggot with little man ego problems. KF is not resembling SA in a bad way. SA's downfall happened purely because idiots ran the show and didn't care about the community, they cared about their egos and ideologies. SA was always poised to get bigger but it never did because of Richard's mental illness and it never had to be that way.

Hit the 30 mark fairly recently. There's not much you can do about it other than push through it. It tends to be harder on people who are not in a stable relationship, so trying to get out there more is a good idea imo. Something that's helped me personally is is trying to avoid looking back at all of the bad things that have happened, but trying to look at the positive things.

Trying not to powerlevel too much, but I've had at least 25% of my friends either get killed or commit suicide in the past ten years, most of my joints have degraded to roughly the same extent seen in 60yos, and I'm way behind most other people my same age careerwise. It's a lot of bad shit, but at the same time, I've learned to handle stress far better than a lot of other people around me, which is certainly a positive.

I think for you, you could certainly chalk this site up as a major success. People like to bitch about this site, but it's one of the few remaining enjoyable places on the internet.

I only come to this site for the Articles & Happenings section.

The culture around chronicling "lolcows" has never made any sense to me. While the common judgments surrounding them are often accurate (if not intentionally unflattering or inflammatory), these people are, ultimately, devoid of any real-world influence. What benefit is there to picking on them? Other than nearly injuring somebody outside of a Gamestop, Chris-Chan — the biggest lolcow of them all — always struck me as a harmless loser who should be left to quietly rot. Meanwhile, a majority of the people who pay these outrageous individuals any mind (particularly with the mindset of "they are an lolcow") often fit a very specific description, shamelessly prodding their targets in the hopes they devolve into a more ridiculous, easily-ridiculed state. The end result of this parasitic relationship is a perpetual vortex of negativity, benefiting nobody. Least of all Null, if this essay he's written is honest.

Meanwhile, Articles & Happenings allows me (and others) to share sincere views on current events without the threat of being banned, doxxed, deplatformed or anything else commonly seen on larger social media venues. There aren't very many places left to do that on the rapidly-shrinking clearnet. Other options include /pol/ (which is a spambot testing zone at this point) or much smaller forums (which seldom host varying views, usually due to an age old problem), but they simply don't offer what Kiwifarms does: a clean, modern forum with a decent community that isn't managed by idiots (except @zedkissed60.)

If I was in charge of a place that enabled free speech to such a degree, I would be content. I'd likely do everything within my power to keep it running. I wouldn't be writing public declarations over how depressed I am that my favorite itinerant fad — chronicling Lolcows — is dipping in popularity. (Why would such a thing drop in popularity in the first place? It's not like the internet is suffering a dearth of ridiculous people to ridicule, so that leaves only one party to blame.)

I've said this before, and it never makes me any more popular, but I think it's a sentiment shared by many of the 2019-2020 users Null singles out in his original post: if Articles & Happenings disappeared, I would get bored of this site and look for an alternative. If you truly believe that politically-intrigued posters are a malignant tumor hanging off the face of the site, I wholeheartedly encourage you to get rid of us. Do I think it would improve Kiwifarms, improve the 'health of the Lolcow community' or make you any happier? No. In fact, I think you would be cutting the stem of a growing community. But I would rather you do what you want in a timely way, rather than have you continue to bottle up these repressed feelings of resentment until you explode. Doing that will only turn you into Luggage Lad, a fate worse than death.

That being said: I also think the Lolcow fragments of the site — no matter how illogical, prone to A-Logs or 'dying' — should continue to exist. If the roles were reversed (serial dox enthusiasts "invading" a forum for political discussion) I would still feel that way.

4. Go outside. Ignore the Karens. There's a whole big blue room out there.
As a woman myself, it's depressing to know that shit's gotten so bad out there that most of us are now usually boiled down to be exploitative, entitled Karens. Not your post specifically, mind you. I see this kind of view prevalent all over the place in way more extreme forms. It just kinda sucks. And I agree about Null expanding horizons. The world is big, it's often just the shitty internet that makes it feel small.

and yes, avoid Karens like the fucking plague.

I feel like life has lost its luster to a lot of us over the past month or so... I just started on antidepressants yesterday.

Whatever you do or want to do, Null, I hope we haven't ruined your prospects.
No one put a gun to Null's head and made him run the site. There's no "we". He took up his burden, and can set it down when he chooses: thus, the responsibility of both taking up and setting down the burden is his.

You've created a wonderful place. I made it late to the party, but definitely see the change in reading older threads vs newer ones. If it shuts down it shuts down. The ride was fun while it lasted. If everyone is a lolcow. No one is.

Also, will you be opening up marriage applications? I would totally be down to pop out some Null Bebes. 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦

@Null You've realized what almost no internet personality does: Real life is more important. Good on you. Gotta ask though, how do you plan to support your family? Does KF make enough money to do that? Unfortunately, your reputation and the people who follow you around to smear you would probably make it hard for you to find another job, at least in the English-speaking world.

About the politics-posting though: If you hate it so much, ban it, or create a separate offsite forum dedicated to it. Some people come here with a political agenda to redpill people (I will fully admit to being one of those people, aka part of the problem in your opinion), but you have to understand that others come to those conclusions naturally when observing society's most dysfunctional members (lolcows), and the circumstances that produce them. They express their conclusions here because they have nowhere else to go. The arc of reality bends alt-right. Don't you have those sorts of beliefs yourself, iirc?

Since you value dissident speech and want to see it flourish, I think hosting an offsite and handing it over to people interested in political discussion would be a good option, though I know you don't like offsites for some reason.

Just wanted to say thanks for the site. I hang out in the salon and the other people there are really nice. First time I've felt I've fitted in for a while. Life is short, the whole point is happiness so do what's best for you, even if that means killing off the site to allow you the personal freedoms you desire. In the meantime, think about the things you loved doing that got lost along the way (offline hobbies preferably) and start bringing them back ... might sound weird but it's a good place to start rebuilding and working on depression. Good luck with everything.
