If a virus spreads through water droplets exhaled from the nose and mouth (the respiratory route), masks designed to capture those water droplets severely reduces the risk of transmission. You do not need a completely different mask for each variety of respiratory-transmitted ailment or whatever crackhouse theory you're on about.

Masks are primarily to prevent you from infecting other people. The masks catch your water droplets when you exhale or cough, emitting less viral particles. Other people wearing a mask will filter some of those particles out. Is it as good as N95? No. But we can't realistically provide N95 or N99 masks to the entire public. Its impossible. Masks are hard to breathe in as is. Even if its theatre, just take one reusable mask and keep using it. The real problem is the 'social distancing' and the lockdowns. Dying on the mask hill seems pointless to me when the other measures are the problems.
