He doesn't really need to mount a formal defense at the impeachment hearing itself given A) the votes to convict simply aren't there and B) even if they were he would almost certainly prevail in the inevitable lawsuit challenging the conviction.

He's actually better served long term by using it as a stage. He does that and his base won't be as nearly demoralized as if he just bowed out (he keeps "fighting" and they'll keep supportin'), which keeps him primed to be an influencing force in republican politics for the rest of his life.

I question what the value is for the Democrats to pursue this when it will be unsuccessful and will give their nemesis a huge platform.

A platform for one of the best media manipulators in history.

Should be fun though.

Don't forgot the part where many feel the Deep State is working to force Trump out of politics forever because of his America First agenda goes against their globalist plans and he had the potential to completely topple their house of cards and expose all of their shady shit. This impeachment is probably the closest thing we're getting to a public execution in this country, and while most liberals will see the vote of a conviction as a grand day for celebration now and forever as they move to create their progressive utopia, MAGA people could easily see this as Trump becoming a martyr.

The idea that because Trump was supposedly trying to subvert democracy and the will of the people means that they will subvert democracy and the will of the people by preventing him from being voted on again will not be lost on many.

They are saying here "well even if you want him as President, even if a majority vote for him we won't allow you for your own good."

you're not wrong. can't count anymore how often I hear "undemocratic" and other stupid platitudes concerning democratically elected parties or persons. heck after the pearl harbor of january 2021 the dems and other stupid foreign politicians couldn't keep it in their pants anymore.
the "will of the people" is only allowed to want certain sanctioned alignments, anything else must be dealt with by any means necessary "for the sake of democracy".

it's as much clownworld as it can get.

A big part of Trump's appeal is that he fights back. Of course, he doesn't know when to stop, and sometimes he punches down at people he would be better to ignore because he just can't let it go (be it insecurity or whatever). But George W. Bush never fought back because he considered it beneath the Office of the Presidency, so the Democrats attacked and slandered for years and eventually swept in with supermajorities enabling them to pass Obamacare (Republicans NEVER have supermajorities to work with). So many people backed Trump because, damn it, at least he fights back. It's a double-edged sword, of course, but he was able to win when the "nice guys" McCain and Romney could not.
