I don't think a general purpose media site will ever be truly great. I understand people want convenience, but if you want quality you need to be a part of multiple separate communities/sites/services all catering to fairly narrowly defined interests while not getting upset they don't all run things they way you prefer. Maybe a really well developed cross-site framework that allows people to tie accounts on different sites together voluntarily for the benefit of friends and such could work out eventually.
