Null said once when talking about idubbz that YouTubers who have hate fanbases of their former fans get then because they’ll hate with the same passion they had for their videos. There isn’t a dedicated hate community for other old review channels like RLM because they haven’t undergone a significant decline in quality like Cinemassacre has. Even for all of Doug’s faults he doesn’t have a dedicated hate fanbase because even his videos are pretty much the same quality as they always were.

I feel like this is partially true. But for some of these older Internet personalities, a lot of them had hate fanbases before giving anyone a reason to genuinely hate them. I constantly remember people 15 years ago just randomly hating people like Doug and James as well as other random internet personalities for no reason. Some of it was probably just trolls looking for attention and drama, but they did exist.

My problem with James detractors is that the community reminds me a lot of WingsofRedemption's detractor community but without the extremism from it. You have some people with some genuine criticism of him, but 90% of it is just people making fun of him for choosing not to shave his head or stuff like that.

James at the end of the day doesn't really warrant a lot of hatred the way a lot of other content creator cows do. I think people like to conflate his behavior with people like DSP or Wings, but he is missing the more malicious angle that those two have. He isn't screaming at trolls in his chat, he isn't fighting with his fans of social media, he isn't demanding money while refusing to listen to any criticism his fanbase has. His work is just becoming more crappy as time goes on and he doesn't seem to want to put any effort into fixing it.

Dan's video was also kind of revealing. I feel like he went into it intending to dogpile on James the way everyone else does because he probably holds some jealousy and spite towards him for being a more impactful YouTuber than he is. But then he started seeing that nearly every criticism of James could easily apply to him so he had to change course real quick.

To be fair, that amount of introspection - even if performative - is more than what I think most breadtubers would allow themselves without sandwiching it between self-pity, "subtle" pleas for asspats, or straight up grift.

I was only half-watching but I believe at the start he addressed all the ways in which he is similar to James in terms of academic background and timeline within the cultural zeitgeist, and in the end he admits that much of what he said against James applies to him, too. He doesn't fully close out the thought, and maybe it is just my personal interpretation, but it felt to me like he almost admitted the jealousy he experienced towards the person he spent the past hour lambasting but didn't spell it out. Kind of like, "how can this bozo who makes a ton of wrong choices and with a worse academic performance than me still be bigger than me?" *pushes glasses up on nose bridge with middle finger*

This would go hand-in-hand with what I heard him say several times throughout the videos that I've seen, which is that when you critique something or someone, you inevitably expose a bit of yourself. I think Dan Olson did a lot of that here. Did a lot of what he said sound utterly pretentious with varying levels of butthurt? Absolutely, and that's what we're discussing here to some extent.

All in all, I feel like it was a fine display of weaponized autism on autism violence and while I won't be going around hyping it up or subscribing to it, I can't help but laugh at the absurdity of it all, and that's kinda why we are all here I think.

Going off of @LordofCringe7206 Vol. 2 , James' problem boils down to the drop in quality of videos and how indifferent he has become. But his old videos are still good with some decent ones here and there.

I don't see a reason to obsessively hate James on a personal level. To me, AVGN is like The Simpsons: the golden era was great but it's largely become stale and unoriginal with gems sprinkled in-between.

I wouldn't be too surprised if Justin was involved with the making off this video either. Justin always tries to befriend any e-celeb or anyone he might be able to get fame off of so I wouldn't be surprised if he's in contact with Dan Olsen. After reviewing this thread I won't say it's time for a course correction or James to shape up because I honestly think he just doesn't care anymore and does what Screenwave requests of him because my theory is that he's a contractor for them now and has to pump out an AVGN every other month or so at a minimum.

Honestly, rewatching some of his old videos, while they are funny and better than his new content, they're not as great as I remember when I watched them when I was 17-18 years old. At the time, there wasn't really anything like it on the internet. It was pretty shocking and new to see this nerdy looking fuck swearing and ranting autistically about old Nintendo games. It was also sort of the comedy style at the time, edgy swearing filled writeups and things like that. Someone swearing and ranting for ten minutes straight about something isn't really as edgy or new as it was then and part of what made those older videos so funny was that they were edgy and new.
