Fans at the time weren't aware of how much Mike contributed to the classic AVGN videos. That realization came later when James began being puppeteered by the slobs. They just saw some guy suddenly take over the channel and were pissed about it.

Same reason that "Loco Bandito" never took off: he is painfully autistic and crude, that's why he needed a character like James and The Nerd to drive his ideas. He was also the soul of the channel too, without him, The Nerd is just a puppet without a hand: Useless, hence why The Slobs entered the picture.
Mike should have owned being the true AVGN and rode that wave to fame, both him and James are awful at actually expanding on their e-careers.

He borrowed the games from Mike but wasn't writing with him. It wasn't until who framed roger rabbit that Mike started helping him write. Mike being the ghost writer that guided James into fame doesn't make sense at all considering it was 100% James who did the first 3.
