The original trilogy of nerd episodes Simon's quest, Dr. Jekyll and Mr Hyde and Karate Kid were written, shot and edited with zero input from Mike Matei. He borrowed the games from Mike but wasn't writing with him. It wasn't until who framed roger rabbit that Mike started helping him write. Mike being the ghost writer that guided James into fame doesn't make sense at all considering it was 100% James who did the first 3.
Of the three, only Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde was any good, and in that one he barely even talked about the game. He had to do an actual review later down the line.
James can be a good ACTOR if he GIVES A SHIT, which he simply doesn't these days. He doesn't actually know a lot about gaming outside of the games he played as a kid, that's where Mike came: He got the footage, he actually knew what he was talking about, and he would play a costumed villain once in a while, only to get shit at or have something shoved up his ass or something since that seem to be the pinnacle of his writing talent. They were great working together, but separated, both are mediocre now.
Mike should have unironically leaned into the Gadget angle and milked the attention/views from the memes. Unfortunately, he seems to hate it, embarrassed about it maybe. I doubt James would have given a shit and made Gadget a re-occuring character in the Nerd like Bugs Bunny or Shit Pickle, this is why they both need each other.

to build on this, mike mentioned James likes more of the skit driven type episodes, whereas mike likes the more informative/basic ones.

If Mike Matei was the "real AVGN" and secretly the driving force behind why the series was so good why were all his attempts at solo comedy so painfully unfunny?
In one stream he said he has a weird sense of humour and likes things that are so unfunny they're funny, if that makes any sense. IMO Mike's type of comedy works best unscripted; watch the recent Centipede stream where he makes an offhand comment about attending a fisting convention and keeps making jokes when reacting to chat comments about it, on the fly.
Mike should have owned being the true AVGN and rode that wave to fame, both him and James are awful at actually expanding on their e-careers.
AVGN was a success because James was probably the only person with cinematography knowledge on Youtube at the time. Mike didn't have that and is too much of a tweaker autist to be the frontman.

And everyone knows that WFRR episode was the one that took off on YouTube. Those first 3 episodes were only meant for people who were close to James. Mike was the one who convinced him to keep doing AVGN after those 3 episodes

TMNT episode was the one which randomly exploded and put AVGN on top.

I don't think he hates it that much, he still makes the Gadget and Elmo voices sometimes in his streams.

Same reason that "Loco Bandito" never took off: he is painfully autistic and crude, that's why he needed a character like James and The Nerd to drive his ideas. He was also the soul of the channel too, without him, The Nerd is just a puppet without a hand: Useless, hence why The Slobs entered the picture.

I think it was the collaboration between them that was good. They balanced out eachother's retardation and managed to shit out something decent between them.

It's like the TV show Red Dwarf. It was great when it was made by both Rob grant and Doug Naylor. Grant was good at the comedy and absurdity stuff, Naylor was good at the sci fi. When they split up, the comedy on red dwarf went downhill and it went too hard into sci fi stuff.

You can see it if you read the books. The first two were written by both of them and they're great books. The 3rd and 4th books were written by one each of them individually and they both kind of suck.

It's the same with James and Mike. They make good stuff together when they have eachother to bounce ideas off of and curtail eachother's more retarded ideas. But when either one of them is left to their own devices their particular brand of autism takes over and the content just sort of sucks.

tldr: it was it was James's and Mike's autism combined that made avgn good, apart their autism is just autistic

James and Mike just covered each others weaknesses. Mike had the games and knowledge about them, while James was better in front of the camera and knew cinematography. I'm assuming that Mike was responsible for most of the foul language and James mainly did the visual gags, not exclusively but leaning in certain directions. You separate the peanut-butter and jelly and the sandwich just isn't the same.

Shit Pickle is Mike's creation and it's even worse than Gadget in the Minecrap video. But people are way too biased to face these facts.

The shit pickle episode never got the same amount of hate just because everyone assumed it was James' creation, and all his simps are going to excuse anything he tries, at least back then.

Mike's creations include: Loco Bandito which is literally just bottom of the barrel edgy garbage, Shit Pickle, Minecraft with Gadget and Elmo in Grouchland both of which were so poorly received Mike spent half a decade attempting to get them scrubbed from the internet using DMCA strikes and I'm supposed to believe he was the true driving force behind AVGN? No way in hell. He helped and was the true retro gamer of the two but he was not the secret comedic genius people try to paint him as.

Mike Matei is a manchild with the humor of a disabled middle schooler. He has negative charisma and all his attempts of comedy on his own failed miserably.

What are you talking about? All 4 of these are exactly the kind of on-brand potty edgy humor Nerd character is known for. You don't need to go beyond the AVGN theme song, where you hear all the various "bottom the barrel" poop related things The Nerd would rather do than play shitty games
True, AVGN was never some secret genius act or anything, you were just 20 years younger and easier to please, just like everyone else.

I think the problem with those was how drawn out they were. The cursing and anger were usually more spread out, smaller doses here and there with the games being the focal point. Those four were too much of the same stupid joke over and over.

I like when food pickle talks thats when i think theshow was the most funny these are my favrite cartoons

Then why did everyone hate them when they came out? Minecraft with gadget was universally hated when it came out and Mike removed it out of shame then spent years trying to get it removed from the internet. If it's the same type of humor why did it get that reaction?
