I feel like a cow needs to provide a steady supply of lolcow behavior to really be one. If you can only point to enough instances to count on one hand over the course of a twenty year online career, it's just not enough. Also making bad material is absolutely not cow behavior, otherwise half the fucking internet would fit the category.

He's definitely a cow, he's just got a magic combination of being wrangled hard enough by good people that have led him down a good path, and being completely uninterested in using the internet directly. His cow antics very rarely slip out, but when they do, they're always absurd. The guy's been in the limelight online for nearly 20 years, yet the book is the first we've heard of a whole lot of silly stuff he did back around 2000. That whole thing about him shooting that dorm destruction video in all earnestness, getting suspended, and trying to kill himself in the most half-hearted way? Nobody even alluded to that this whole time. They had twenty years to come out and say "Oh, yeah, that's James Rolfe, I knew him in film school! Hey, here's a funny story-".

The Cinemassacre Podcast and all the fallout from that drama came with that story from Kieran about how James is afraid of elevators, and he bolted up a down escalator in order to avoid taking one. There's another story we could have heard at some point, but it was unknown until Kieran mentioned it one day. For such a popular parasocial internet figure, there was so much random stuff we didn't know about him.

I don't think a single person in this thread has ever argued that James should not be mocked or criticized. It's specifically the lolcow label I had an issue with not him being made fun. That being said I am also tired of this arguing over this so I'm just going to agree James is a mild lolcow. If lolcowdom is a spectrum and Chris Chan is on the extreme right, someone like kingcobrajfs is in the middle James to me would be on the left.

There are no modern stories of James having autistic meltdowns smashing windows or trying to kill himself. Like I fully get it that IS lolcow behavior and extereme cringe. I get it. My issue is none of it happened when he was famous and he clearly grew out of it. That's not him anymore.

A huge part of lolcow behavior is that it makes it online somehow. We don't know if James still has autistic meltdowns (I mean, he probably has) but it becomes irrelevant since we never know about it either way. I think the best summary is that he has lolcow traits, but thanks to keeping a low profile on social media sites and surrounding himself with people who won't sell him out for easy likes/clout means he stays under the radar.
