"On my honor, I, Christian W Chandler....."

Honestly, I am legitamately surprised that there are no mentions of Pokemon anywhere.

Of course, I have to wonder if he skipped the atomic bombing for some reason. It feels like the answer should be really obvious, like it's written in big, bold words...

Ah, yeah, that's why.

I totally think Chris left out the bombing because that would have meant he was saying a plane with the word "GAY" written on it was the first plane to drop an atomic weapon in an act of war.

Of course, the other B-29 ("Bockscar") to drop an atomic bomb had its bomb's codename be "Fat Man", so that wouldn't go over well with Chris either.

Some things about this paper just don't make sense to me. He wrote a paper about a historical event for English class? And he sprinkled in some Spanish words like Ricardo Weston Chandler, Ingles, and Trabejos "Cited." I looked up what trabejos means, and it does mean work, but in the context of like a job. (I think. I don't really know Spanish)
I don't know about Chris' school, but at the schools I went to, whenever they wanted a paper with a bibliography. they showed us the format to use. Or did Chris not listen to his teacher's instructions? And his paper doesn't really fully explain the reasons that Japan and US went to war. I don't think this quality of writing would have cut it even in most 5th grade classes. Or maybe I went to really tough schools.

More than likely the "flavor of the week" was learning MLA formatting and how to use citations in text. The "research" aspect of the paper was likely moot because the teacher was only really paying attention to the bibliography page and parenthetical citations, two things Chris clearly demonstrated exceptional skills at.

Amazing! One of the biggest andmost important breakthroughs in christorian research in many years!

This should once and for all put the debate about Chris's academical performance to rest!

Now granted, my experience with American high schools is somewhat limited, but surely this is way, way below what would normally be considered adequate for a passing grade?

The fact that Chris was on the honor roll, let alone graduated AT ALL, despite submitting assignments of such a poor quality, suggests that Bob&Barb were a real pain in the ass of the local school/school board.

Such a pain, that some sort of unofficial or verbal memo must have been passed around the teachers lounge:

"Leave the Chandler kid alone, as he's unteachable and his family are a real pain. Don't be obvious about it, but don't waste time on him, and give him a passing grade, unless you're prepared to spend hours every week, dealing with his crazy grandparents/legal guardians..."

Did he actually use a message board topic as a cite?!?! My god, the historian in me is weeping.
Most sped students I went to school with were pretty hard working, decent kids. I don't recall any "Chrises". (At least, as far as I know.)

Quite honestly, I'm surprised he didn't use the word "Jap".

This leak does raise another question though: Were his parents involved in his school work at all?

Let's assume that Barb was out expanding the hoard and raiding thrift stores when Chris wrote his assignment.

But Bob for crying out loud! He was pretty smart and a veteran of the Korean War!! I could see him responding to Chris's history paper with a sorely neededt right hook to Chris's chin...

Did he pay any attention at all to his spawns poor scholastic performance, or had he just given up on Chris a while ago?

Yeah, like Borb really gave a shit about helping with his homework.

What I thought was stupid is that Chris has a name that has a Spanish equivalent. If he had my Spanish teacher, his name would've been Cristobal or Cris, not Ricardo. And yeah, using the names was retarded, but it was a bunch of 13 year olds and it didn't last. CWC still claims the name Ricardo. I wonder what the motivation was? What was his Spanish bear for that name? The teacher? Another student? Has the name Richard ever appeared elsewhere in his life? Or is it as simple as some sort of I Love Lucy connection? I don't want to accept it as being THAT simple.

It could be there was another Chris in the class. My name is Kathleen, (I went by Kathi in high school, Kat nowadays), but there was a Katie, and she got "Katrina" first. So I was Luisa. Then the next year I got Pepita, because there was a Lisa in the class. *sigh*

This was a tragic event with guns, insults and such (I think that's what it says.FUCK CURSIVE!) needs to be on randomtxt.txt.

'The US and Japan really wanted to get it on.'

I'm guessing Chris had seen Hetalia at that point...

This isn't even a passing grade in middle school. You could probably get a C if you were in third grade or something, though. By high school you're supposed to know what a thesis statement is at the bare minimum.

Okay, so
I've got a Masters in History. After recovering from my initial reaction to seeing this paper, I had to make an official recording of it.

So,

A very quick, and I hope, fitting dramatic reading/ documentary film based on Chris' writing.

God help me, God help us all.

I had to take my History degree down from the wall and hold it to my chest after reading Chris' essay. You're made of sterner stuff than I.

One thing that stuck out to me was how much of it was quotes. Like he took whole sentences he liked and just pasted them in there. I expected him to take two different sentences he liked and jam them together in to a totally new and original character.

Sounds like he's trying to recite the Girl Scout pledge:

"On my honor, I will try
To serve God and my country,
To help people at all times,
And to live by the Girl Scout law"
On my Legos, I will try
To serve GodBearJesus and da USA,
To fight da trolls at all dang times,
And to live by the Tomgirl law"

Does anyone else think it's ironic how Chris' essay resembles some of the defining moments of World War II?

Bob probably ranted at the principal/teacher, threatened to sue and brought up the lawsuit he tried in the past to show he meant business while Barb cussed up a storm and also threatened to sue.
And ironically, by doing so, it did more harm for their son than good.

The "on my honor" part also sounds like the Boy Scout oath.

As in... Much like a wartime atrocity, you just try to get through it alive and afterward you try to pick up the pieces but you know you will never be whole again?
