I'm perplexed here. Are ferrets just running around wild where he is and they need to be rescued? Is that a big problem somewhere in the USA I'm unaware of? Is there some mass influx of homeless and abused ferrets that warrants making some sort of shelter for them? Am I getting this right?

This bit should be pushed more. I've seen fans justify it specifically as being a "sanctuary", but he specifically calls it a rescue regularly. I've never heard of a rescue whose goal is to keep animals forever while expanding capacity, since their actual goal is to rehabilitate and move animals to homes, or back into the wild if they're wildlife. Ferrets are obviously domesticated pets.
