Canadians without heavy internet activity will assume he's exceptional. That's more important than most realize. For about 35-40 years, we've had virtually no state run institutions for the mentally incapable. They live in community group homes wherever possible. And the government has a WIDE view of "possible".
It is common in nice neighbourhoods to have at least one group home nearby. It is common, as a teenage girl, to be told you have to be polite to the lewd retarded males who approach you, because they are harmless pity cases. It is true, they don't usually physically attack. These events don't make the news, because they aren't reported. Girls in nice neighbourhoods don't make a big deal about poor retards grabbing them or demanding they make babies together.
It is common in Canada to have been assigned as a "helper" for a retarded child who was mainstreamed into a classroom. The more mature and responsible the girl (less often a boy, they make the boys welcome exceptional folk onto sports teams as sort of mascots or custodians), the more ridiculous the assignment. Like a preteen girl can actually serve as an assistant to a seriously mentally disabled child. Sometimes the partner child is rewarded with being picked at, punched, shoved around, or just the joy of sharing the spotlight of the outbursts. We teach Canadians very carefully how to treat the disabled. There are absolutely no negative consequences to this. No bitterness at all in people who were unfortunately saddled with caretaking and forced to accept sometimes criminal behaviour...for kindness.
All this to say, if that large smelly idiot approached you in Canada, you wouldn't run away. You would smile and speak slowly and clearly, and think it's just great that this employer is giving special people like Jess a chance. And thank your lucky stars he didn't grope you or make a scene.
This whole social system is why Lindsay sheperd gets so much shit over picking on Jess. Your average middle class Canadian thinks LS is violating the sacred system of pretending retards are harmless, special and always valued members of our communities.
