You don't make paper and cardboard from "ancient forests", you make paper and cardboard from stuff like quaking aspen where a) the tree is a giant root ball that sends up hundreds or thousands of stems, b) has very soft, white wood that doesn't take much processing or chemicals to turn into paper because there's so little lignin, c) can be clear cut and ready to harvest again in 20-25 years without any additional human interaction needed, and d) grows natively over most of North America so you just need to go out and find some. It's like a haircut for the tree, the only way to try and kill it off is soil sterilants or cutting it down and immediately planting different trees to try and crowd it out.
