I want to break this down. So I shall. Minor PL of being someone whose had backyard chickens, sheep, turkey, and did some small level farming but gave it up because it was just too much work alongside a regular job.

Considering we know they're reading this thread. Here's some handy advice.

  • Firstly, whoever is doing the budgeting and is putting the bulk of the money in, even if I don't personally like you, keep your name on everything. Don't break it up jointly unless one of the others are actively contributing significant money too it. So when this goes wrong or south you've got better legal standing to recoup losses.
  • Doubly so for your bank accounts. Do not share them or link them. Don't have credit cards with multiple names no matter how you're all so in love & polyamory.
  • As much as you're 'itching' to help others you should be screening anyone who joins thoroughly, how well do they know basic skills? how clean do they keep their spaces? how clean do they keep themselves? how well do they budget? how fit are they to help with farm tasks? how well do they get along with the other members of the group? Can they obtain work in your locale? Are they capable of working? Otherwise you stand to be footing the bill for another mouth that creates issues with the people you currently have living together while they provide little to nothing in return.
  • A farm requires all hands on deck, can you say that's what you're getting? because if it's not it's time for tough talks. This will not work unless everyone is pulling their weight and then some. It's tiring and thankless to be successful.
  • Start divvying up your chores now. Get everyone into a pattern while it's still early. Twitter will not collect your eggs, monitor your bees, manage your alpacas, etc. You need to get a routine happening on a farm to keep everything running smoothly. Everyone helps. EVERYONE.
  • You should be able to secure a good, new, tractor on an extended payment plan which will have it's warranty still intact and be an investment for the business. Second hand farm equipment with you having no idea of the pedigree of can rapidly become a money sink. If you're truly devoted to the idea consider looking around your area for small business supports that may help you acquire one at a better cost or better loan rate.
  • Investments to improve and upgrade the business should always come before everything else.
  • You do not keep all animals in a single barn.
  • You don't have a barn? You have almost 100 Alpacas according to you but no barn?!
  • Look into pre-fabricated buildings.
  • Bee are not kept in barns. If you're going into a large beekeeping project you will need a bee-yard which will also require fencing to attempt to keep out animals that would rob hives. Like bears.
  • Beekeeping is a very intensive process. You can watch any bee-keepers on youtube and see the amount of work that goes into them. They need frequent checks to keep them healthy, mite free, prevent swarming, mass die, wasp robbing, off etc it's not as simple as get hives, get honey.
  • Chickens and ducks will need smaller buildings. Almost nobody keeps them all in one space, especially with other farm animals. A house for your chickens and a separate one for your ducks can be done fairly easily by you for a limited expense as long as you've got the basics of structural building and the infinite internet to give you plan ideas. Make sure to fence them securely, then even more securely. Give them a guard Alpaca if they're allowed to free range.
  • Consider hardy crops. Potatoes are a good investment. Same with Pumpkins if there's no local pumpkin farm already. Do not pick fickle crops. Start simple and expand if you're successful.
  • Is everyone learning new skills? The best way to cut costs is to learn how to do things that you'd otherwise have to outsource. Starting learn to form your own wool, process your honey and comb, build bee boxes, split your hives, pickle, preserve, butcher, pluck, etc. The more the people in the group know the less you have to pay out to outsiders you contract.
  • Get educated. Not just in new skills. See if you can learn basic vet care. Look for programs being put off, like bottling or pickling- crafting etc. There's no such thing as too much education, talents, or skills. (Collecting toys is not this.) Learn to knit. Learn to dye the fiber you make.
  • Be social. Arguably the hardest thing, as the thread posters are aware, you need to make contacts with local farmer's markets and market yourself. Local is often one of the best sources for business especially in the crunchy circles- which means you've got to seem sane, clean, put together, and not crazy. You want people to buy your products you have to appear normal, tanking your local market because ya'll are labelled as nuts is a death sentence.
  • Don't associate your business accounts with your own social media. If I was looking into buying your products personally and I found all the oversharing and creepy stuff you post to your personal socials while trying to find information on the farm I would take my business elsewhere.
The only thing here that sounds about right is that they have water rights on the land.

From what I've seen, alpaca farming is a bit like a pyramid scheme (here's an article about it) and that the bubble burst awhile back. I wonder what their business plan is (if they even have one). Unless they have some kind of backup plan I don't see why they wouldn't be doomed like the thousands of other alpaca ranches before them.

I'm not going to hate on them for wanting to do it, that's more ambitious than a lot of other internet troons, I've just seen a lot of failed alpaca businesses in my day.

I know of 2 families that got into financial trouble because the wives had this great idea to have an alpaca farm while also working full time jobs. At least the troons don't have real jobs that will get in the way. But, since troons don't have a good grasp on reality, I simply can't see how they can manage a business that requires as much hard physical labor as farming. Farmers also don't make a huge amount of money, so troons will have to cut back on the lingerie and sex toys as well as be post SRS since they won't be able to do anything for a while after they have the chop. Good luck with that.
