Kiwi Farms Community Doom Mapping Project

Fuck I wanted to make the same joke in my map but I couldn't figure out a way to fit it in with the theme
Hey, don't let it stop you. Rules are basically non-existent, no one is limited to one specific lolcow, jokes like that are bound to overlap.

I want to have a custom midi or song for my map, but I don't want to cause any issues.
Custom music should be fine. I've never worked with custom music, but even replacing existing songs should be fine.

Never tried 3D level editors before and it's pretty fun.

What's the reference?

If you zoom out fully you'll be able to.
I recommend including an automap somewhere (even if it's at the end) so it can be seen in full.

There was a map in the Japanese community project that was a Doom comic as a map.

Work is underway on Dilation Station 41. So far it's a relatively standard tech base themed map with a landing pad in an outside area that you will have to traverse multiple times.
Blocking is halfway done, detail work a quarter done. I'm trying to implement difficulty settings, multiplayer (deathmach and coop) as well as secrets.
It's not very meme filled yet so I'm still open to suggestions.

Ok got rid of all the custom files and prettied it up the best I could with lights and decorations, unless we're adding a shared texture WAD this is the final version of my submission.

If you're a complete beginner to doom mapping like I am DO NOT make stacked floors with 3D platforms, it turns into a clusterfuck very quickly;

After some playtesting I realized that after room 1 there's basically nothing stopping the player from just running past the mobs in the remaining ones. Putting lines of pinkies in the tiny corridors connecting the letters feels fucking cheap so I thought about doing the classic 2016/Eteternal thing of "you can only leave when everything in the room is dead", problem is the only solutions I found say "oh this can only be done in Hexen/Heretic". Surely there's a pretty straightforward way to deal with this?

Not going to reveal any of my other identities, but I've been involved to varying degrees in a number of fairly well-regarded, high-profile releases in the total conversion and Russian DOOM scene over the years and would be interested in contributing, but no custom textures is cursed and pozzed. The standard DOOM texture set is too limiting for a really quality modern WAD and also OTEX itself, in my personal opinion, has been heavily overused and misused by others now to the point of provoking boredom. It's not difficult to implement a custom texture set which would only add a couple MB to the total file size and which anyone interested could use. There is also no reason to not allow custom midi as midi is a couple of dozen kb per map at worst. I'd be happy to offer some texture set suggestions or even put something with a tighter focus together to lend to the project, but I wouldn't be interested in contributing without at least some allowance for custom textures as I really do just absolutely loathe the traditional DOOM II aesthetic.

I don't think the point of the mapping project is to make the next ultra-high quality super detailed modern mega wad, it's just more for people to come together and make some shit. I agree that the lack of custom stuff is a little annoying, but its nothing horrible. The whole "I loathe the traditional DOOM II aesthetic" thing is just a you issue, though.

Never claimed it wasn't, but I've just got no interest contributing to a project that will look unappealing to me. Especially this being a KF derived project if we want anyone in the wider world to take notice and through gritted teeth make admission of its merits then we would need to put our best foot forward and you know, actually put some effort into the thing. While I understand and appreciate the desire to get people who might be unfamiliar with DOOM mapping involved in the project I really don't think that requires gating off everything but the absolute basic toolset, there is a difference between being new to something and just being shit at something and the key difference between is all in a little bit of effort. Even people who are new to DOOM mapping can make something worthwhile if they put in some actual effort to learn the tools and texture implementation is well on the easy-to-learn babbies first steps as a DOOM modder side of things, i.e. custom textures are not so complicated as to gatekeep the project from newbies.

Skill issue. If you cant make something look good with just the stock textures, you will use new fancier looking textures as a crutch, disguising your lack of geometry and detail with cc4-tex.

CC4 is also boring to me. Regardless, if you've been playing DOOM mods seriously for long enough there's a good chance you've played some of the things I've been involved with and absolutely gushed your pants over how good they looked. I'm well versed with the tools, I just don't like the standard textures anymore. After seeing them in countless wads over the decades I've come to hate them.

Yea and I'm John Romero himself. You cant claim cred without deanoning so you either step up or shut it. Cause nobody cares what you have to say if you aren't going to contribute. You make demands and spew opinions yet you aren't here compiling resource pack, you talk big about your accomplishment yet you don't even want to make a map.

The problem with Doom 2's stock selection aren't really the textures, you can move those around and experiment. It's the lack of flats that really ruins it. They really screw you over when you try to create a more complex room. That's why stuff like CC4-tex is a godsend, even if it's overused. We definitely need a texture pack with good flats, any kind will do.

I made no "demands", I simply said I would not be interested without an allowance for custom textures and I offered to compile a resource pack in my first post here, retard, but I'm not going to waste my time if a texture pack is a hard no. Maybe read more, seethe less.

P.S. - John Romero is a tranny chaser so it's a bit weird to find you here of all places. Also, we have a lot to thank you and team for, but you're not really that good of mapper tbh. I'd be way more interested to talk to Carmack, sorry.

Well, I'm thoroughly intimidated, though I'm still gonna give it a try and see if I can't fart out something. Great work.

That's normal, especially if you know the map. Being the creator, you know the map better than anyone.

But if you want to slow the player, there are two and a half methods I know of.

Put a switch or a key out of plain sight. It doesn't have to hidden or a secret, just not in your view as soon as you enter the room. People will clear the room so they can look around in peace.

Baron or hell knights slow the player down. As long as it's not a huge open area, most people will slow down instead of trying to kite around them. Again, speedrunners can get around monsters, but that's normal. Normal players, not so much.

A half measure is a door or lift. It doesn't have to be slow (and shouldn't be) but it will be enough that most normie players won't bum rush for risk of getting hit in the back.

I'd be happy to offer some texture set suggestions or even put something with a tighter focus together to lend to the project
Sure, any advice or suggestions is great. I'm not neck deep in the Doom community, so any texture packs that arn't OTEX, aa_tex, or cc4 are welcome.

As for OTEX, my main problem with it is that it doesn't mesh with the stock Doom textures, so it has to be all OTEX or nothing imo, but that's just me.

And no, I don't think textures would confuse new people. The problem is even experienced Doom modders can't leave things alone and as a result, either by accident or maliciousness, fuck everything up. And I'm lazy, I don't want to have to deal with that problem.

As for creating a texture pack, I can give it a shot. I think I can do it on a technical level. As an indie dev, there's a few CC0 packs I use a bunch that can easily be resized and given the PlayPal palette. However, I'd like requests of what people want. Other than a computer monitor with a KF logo, I don't know what else to include. I don't want just a bunch of photos of lolcows slathered on every surface.

Especially this being a KF derived project if we want anyone in the wider world to take notice and through gritted teeth make admission of its merits then we would need to put our best foot forward and you know, actually put some effort into the thing.
If you want that, do it.

The problem with that is Doom has some amazing projects. Ancient Aliens, Evilution, Scythe 1 and 2, My House. Those projects took years to develop. Even if you put the time in, those projects are a high bar to clear. And it would all be pointless anyway because the Doom communities would just deny our mods existence. No matter how good it was, they'd claim it wasn't that good.

If the goal is to simply to troll the Doom community, you'd be better off simply mentioning Brutal Doom, Terry wads, or Moonman for the millionth time and watch them have yet another meltdown.

It's kind of like Null's approach to t-shirt designs. They should reference the farms, but be something you can wear. Something where those who are in on the joke will get it. As has been discussed, we could easily make a low effort troll wad, but that wouldn't hold interest. Same with something that puts lolcow heads and voice lines on stock enemies. "Haha, Patrick as a Mancubus. Get it! Because he's fat!" works once, but again, fails to make a meaningful impact. If people want that, they're welcome to it.

The way I see it. This mod is for us. For Kiwi Farms, and it should be something people actually want to play. And even if it sucks, we had fun making it.

A thought I did have was maybe reskinning or programming enemies based off of Farms culture. For example taking the Revenant and turning it into a Newfag (complete with pink join date!) that shoots personal army requests at the player or turning the Cacodemon into this :gunt:.

Another idea is having a level where the player basically makes a thread in the Prospering Grounds, and the final quality of the new thread depends on how many secrets you find. I have no fucking clue how complex it would be to program something like that though (I'm only just coming to terms with how to mod Magma Crabs into tameable pets in Dwarf Fortress).

I think I like the direction of a more subtle approach, although I think it should care to not be too subtle, it should contain some of the site's identity or it will stop being a kf wad and become a regular wad that just happens to be made by kf users. It should contain some references or in jokes that the average person wouldn't bat an eye to, but that would make sense for those that use the site.
