So I tried to watch his recent League of Extraordinary Gentlemen which clocks in at over an hour and fifty minutes. This hit a special chord with me, as League of Extraordinary Gentlemen is one of my all time favorite comics (drawn by my all time favorite artist, Kevin O'Neill), that I have more than a few problems with, not the least bit about the author's politics and philosophy, and Kyle Kallgren went from one of my favorite video makers (this was the early 2010s) to my favorite lolcow, and easily one of my LEAST favorite people.
I simply couldn't finish it. I wrote a series of notes and found myself making a comment every minute or so. It was very draining to watch.
My problem wasn't his opinions on the comic, which he prefaces with a totally humble anticipation of "nerd rage". I myself have a LOT of problems with the comic and especially Alan Moore. I couldn't finish the video because Kallgren is genuinely hard to watch. He is insanely unfunny.
He does this terrible self-deprecating thing that so many reviewers do, especially SuperEyepatchWolf. "Um, this video is, er, unscripted, ok?" "Because...reasons, ok." "Totally can't um, relate to this." "Wow, it's almost like I didn't make a script for this." It comes off as seriously uncharismatic, lame, and theatre kid-ish.
The entire video is peak BaiZuo, just Kyle getting mad at every single "problematic" moment where the only joke is "yikes." I still think some of his 2010s stuff is funny, how did this guy get so stale? Just non-stop being offended for other people, as if he desperately needs the acceptance and recognition to remind himself he's "not one of the baddies." Also given his history of sexual misbehavior, his sneering at Moore for perceived misogynies is pretty rich. Over all the video was sad, pathetic, and annoying. Kyle is devoid of humor or likability, just non-stop ideology, holier-than-thou posturing, pseudointellectualism, and content warnings. But it did feature some decent editing of one of my favorite comics, which of course he completely misunderstood.
Might try to watch the final stretch later and I may post my entire thoughts on the whole video another day.
