EU Le Gilets Jaune protests thread - Do you hear the people sing? Singing the songs of angry men?

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-46233560

One protester has died and dozens were injured as almost a quarter of a million people took to the streets of France, angry at rising fuel prices.

The female protester who died was struck after a driver surrounded by demonstrators panicked and accelerated.

The "yellow vests", so-called after the high-visibility jackets they are required to carry in their cars, blocked motorways and roundabouts.

They accuse President Emmanuel Macron of abandoning "the little people".

Mr Macron has not so far commented on the protests, some of which have seen demonstrators call for him to resign.

But he admitted earlier in the week that he had not "really managed to reconcile the French people with their leaders".

Nonetheless, he accused his political opponents of hijacking the movement in order to block his reform programme.

What has happened so far?
Some 244,000 people took part in protests across France, the interior ministry said in its latest update.

It said 106 people were injured during the day, five seriously, with 52 people arrested.

Most of the protests have been taking place without incident although several of the injuries came when drivers tried to force their way through protesters.

Chantal Mazet, 63, was killed in the south-eastern Savoy region when a driver who was taking her daughter to hospital panicked at being blocked by about 50 demonstrators, who were striking the roof of her vehicle, and drove into them.

The driver has been taken into police custody in a state of shock.

In Paris protesters approaching the Élysée Palace, the president's official residence, were repelled with tear gas.

Why are drivers on the warpath?
The price of diesel, the most commonly used fuel in French cars, has risen by around 23% over the past 12 months to an average of €1.51 (£1.32; $1.71) per litre, its highest point since the early 2000s, AFP news agency reports.

World oil prices did rise before falling back again but the Macron government raised its hydrocarbon tax this year by 7.6 cents per litre on diesel and 3.9 cents on petrol, as part of a campaign for cleaner cars and fuel.

The decision to impose a further increase of 6.5 cents on diesel and 2.9 cents on petrol on 1 January 2019 was seen as the final straw.

Speaking on Wednesday, the president blamed world oil prices for three-quarters of the price rise. He also said more tax on fossil fuels was needed to fund renewable energy investments.

How big is the movement?
It has broad support. Nearly three-quarters of respondents to a poll by the Elabe institute backed the Yellow Vests and 70% wanted the government to reverse the fuel tax hikes.

More than half of French people who voted for Mr Macron support the protests, Elabe's Vincent Thibault told AFP.

"The expectations and discontent over spending power are fairly broad, it's not just something that concerns rural France or the lower classes," he said.

The BBC's Lucy Williamson in Paris says the movement has grown via social media into a broad and public criticism of Mr Macron's economic policies.

Are opposition politicians involved?
They have certainly tried to tap into it. Far-right leader Marine Le Pen, who was defeated by Mr Macron in the second round of the presidential election, has been encouraging it on Twitter.

She said: "The government shouldn't be afraid of French people who come to express their revolt and do it in a peaceful fashion."

Laurent Wauquiez, leader of the centre-right Republicans, called on the Macron government to scrap the next planned increase in carbon tax on fossil fuels in January to offset rising vehicle fuel prices.

Mr Castaner has described Saturday's action as a "political protest with the Republicans behind it".

Olivier Faure, leader of the left-wing Socialist Party said the movement - which has no single leader and is not linked to any trade union - had been "born outside political parties".

"People want politicians to listen to them and respond. Their demand is to have purchasing power and financial justice," he said.

Is there any room for compromise?
On Wednesday, the government announced action to help poor families pay their energy and transport bills.

Prime Minister Edouard Philippe announced that 5.6 million households would receive energy subsidies. Currently 3.6 million receive them.

A state scrappage bonus on polluting vehicles would also be doubled for France's poorest families, he said, and fuel tax credits would be brought in for people who depend on their cars for work.

Protesters have mocked the president relentlessly as "Micron" or "Macaron" (Macaroon) or simply Manu, the short form of Emmanuel, which he famously scolded a student for using.

To be honest, I don't blame the driver at all.

I haven't been paying as much attention to the situation as I should have, so forgive me, but I'm confused. I thought a significant portion of the yellow jackets were private-sector employees who make above minimum wage. So why, when Macron sees these people rioting because of his artificial gas hikes, is his idea of a fix to turn to a completely separate group of people and give them a fake raise? Am I missing something here?

He’s just trying to buy off various groups with as many sketchy unsupported promises as he can before they drag him to one of the guillotine’s they have been parading about.

Tldr: there has been a terrorist attack on the Starsbourg Christmas market. 2 dead, 11 wounded. Terrorist at large.

People here are saying that this is highly convenient for Macron. That way he can decree the state of emergency since the terrorist hasn't been caught yet, and forbid any and all protests and gatherings this weekend. So rip Act 5 of the Yellow Vest riots.
*conspiracy theory music starts playing*

Just look at it this way. After his failure of a Presidential speech from yesterday, Macron would've had to deal with more protests this weekend.
But a convenient attack changes everything. Now, he can ban the right to protest within the law by citing the state of high alert and emergency AND he gets to unite the country against a common enemy - terrorists.

His problem is his globalist policies are what are importing the terrorists. The Yellow Vests will view terrorist attacks as blood on his hands unless he addresses immigration. Which his paymasters in Brussels and Berlin will never allow.

If he tries to crack down on protests using this it's only going to escalate things.
It's globalist policies like his that led to this man being there.

If he cracks down on the native population because some of them were murdered in a terrorist attack?
That guillotine might not be a joke for much longer.

Guess we'll have to wait and see. Wouldn't surprise me if he really cracks down on the freedom to gather and protest, and tries to use this attack as an excuse.

Wonder what weapon was used in this attack. It'd sure be real convenient if it turns out to be 5.56mm or a straight up G36, like the one that got stolen at the start of the month.
If I were the vests I'd protest anyway, suspiciously timed attack/state of emergency be damned.

Clearly an AK provided by the "Russians"

Honestly while I wouldn't put it past him to do it this whole fiasco makes me question whether or not the French government is competent enough to actually think of that.

They had a press conference I just watched and (at least in the area) they announced that they weren't going to allow demonstrations, to 'allow the police to concentrate on their work'. This was mentioned before actual security measures, heh.

They mentioned the measures were being signed by the Prefect, so it's likely just the affected area for now.

So Paris will still burn.

I doubt Strasbourg will let that stop them though tbh.

Again, whatever's going on in France is the real deal. You can tell just because of the media's reaction to it. Their hostile responses, and scare-mongering about how "fascists" or Russian bots are involved in heating the situation up are so totally opposed to their laudatory praising of Occupy, of the Arab Spring, of the Ukraine color revolution, of the Trump protests, tells you that this isn't astroturfed. It's no wonder they are trying to pin a state sponsor (Russia) on them, because the truth - the terrifying truth - is that this is an expression of popular discontent absent external control. Those other protests were also expressions of popular discontent, there's no doubt about that. But there was an external influences stirring up the pot, powerful interests manipulating things and tugging on strings here and there. That's not happening in France right now.

MAD VLAD Putin doesn't have the power to put a million French people on the streets, as much as the American media might like to believe.

Exactly. Now the useful idiots are parroting the media talking points online. I noticed a post on reddit yesterday that had video of the police dragging a protestor around. There were plenty of idiots calling it Russian propaganda because it was sourced from RT. How the fuck is raw footage with no commentary propaganda?

I'm feeling... actual respect for the French. It's a strange feeling.

God bless those cheese-eating surrender monkeys.

That and the numbers are holding steady, "Fake" protests lose their steam within three days to a work week because the shills have to go back to their dayjobs or the budget for the protest is hit and they can't collect from the organizers anymore.

Here? There was a dip after the initial turnout, but since then, the number of reported protesters (which is probably deliberately underestimated) keeps holding in the same window, give or take a tenth..... when the people don't get bored and go away, and decide losing money and sleep and possibly freedom are a price to pay to be heard, those in charge had better wake up.

:autism: Remember that scene in the Godfather where Michael Corleone realizes that the revolutionaries will eventually topple Cuba's government? When he sees a rebel kill himself rather than be taken into police custody? - "The police are paid, but the rebels make nothing, yet they aren't afraid to die. That means they can win"

Wouldn’t be surprised if they expanded those measures to the entire France. That’s what is usually done in those types of situation.

Again, don’t want to scream « conspiracy », but this is an awfully convenient attack that does help Macron.
I mean sure, right wing parties already accused him of not controlling the influx of migrants leading to these attacks or actually fighting against Islamists, but these call outs are all for nothing if he can just forbid the right to protest and gather.

Edit: the conspiracy theory angle is actually being covered extensively by French news as of this moment.

so the fucktard will break the EU if he doesnt cut the budget, italy said they will cut to the 2% wanted by the EU, will look realy realy bad if they let french get away with almost 4%...
a very clever move by salvini, push some investments and raises to the next year to demolish the EU budget rules.

To be fair he was Algerian a lot of Algerians are automatically French.

A child born in France before January 1, 1994, to a parent born in a former French overseas territory prior to its acquisition of independence, is automatically French.

Algeria gained Independence in 1962 so there are a lot of Algerians able to claim French citizens.

It’s not that protests are faked so much as exaggerated. For example there were “anti-Trump” demonstrations in New Mexico which the media suggested were huge. In reality, the chaos was minimal and the event was already over by the time rioting began. Another aspect they left out of the coverage is that there were lots of Pro-Trump supporters at the event too and they were having bbq with the anti-side. It was really a relaxed atmosphere but the media made it look like there was a revolution afoot. This happened at other “anti-Trump” rallies too.

Oh yes I know, and Algerians born after the independence can claim dual citizenship if they reside and pay taxes in France. They have a special line at the immigration office.

However, since he’s still non-white, a lot of right wing people took it as yet another example of migration destroying the West.
Marine Le Pen for her part just pointed out that Macron doesn’t fight against homegrown Islamism well enough.
