Left 4 Dead & L4D2

LEFT 4 DEAD 2 GETTING AN OFFICIAL CONTENT UPDATE The Last Stand update is coming. Community + Valve update.
It's something, I guess.

Even though The Last Stand has been a mod map that's been available for a very long while, since even L4D1 IIRC.

Only here because the latest L4D2 update is named after me!

I should replay these games some time since they actually run decent on my crappy PC. I remember logging in a TON of hours on XBOX Live back in the day when I had no idea what PC gaming was. I made it my goal to play through all the vanilla campaigns back then on the hardest difficulties and damn near did it too. Swamp Fever or whatever that map was called always did me in though, no matter how hard I tried or how many friends I got. Something about the layout in the last two levels of that campaign just weren't clicking with me back then.

Nowadays I play more casually. I prefer the atmosphere and game feel of the original Left 4 Dead, sorta wish they just kept updating that. But oh well, mods exist.

L4D1 and 2 can run on toasters at this point, I'm pretty sure.

It even ran decently on a fucking Wal-Mart pre-built desktop PC that could barely run WoW that I had back in 2007-2008.

sorry to necro the thread, but what is everyone's thoughts on The Last Stand update?

i've heard it has stability issues and voicelines being broken because of it using cooldown timers

I played it twice, it was meh. I was never into L4D much though because I preferred Killing Floor.

I personally had no issues with it. Its very fun, especially considering this was all an effort from devoited fans that Valve gave their blessing towards.

You know, its bizzare. Does anyone remember that there was a time people actually got PISSED at Valve for releasing L4D2 one year after L4D?

IMAGINE COMPLAINING THAT YOU ARE GETTING VALVE GAMES TOO QUICKLY

IMAGINE IT!!!!!

Playing this game again has rekindled my hatred for the Source engine. Hit detection is, as usual, all kinds of whack, and it's awful in a game where playing on higher difficulties imposes a steep damage penalty on body shots.

Is it possible for a Left 4 Dead 3 game to be made, if so what would the plot be?
I always assumed since the first game was set in the northeast, the second game in the south, that the west coast would be an obvious choice for a L4D3, think Los Angeles, southern California, maybe even Seattle to get meta.

But I also thought an interesting out of left field setting would be Japan and incredibly Valve did make a version of L4D2 for the Japanese arcades which though the levels were the same, the characters were changed to be Japanese which is pretty close to what I imagined.

Honestly, a Left 4 Dead game taking place in Los Angeles would be great.

I think the question is if it should take place a short period after L4D2 or it should be somewhat aware of the time between releases and make it set several years later?

Tho on the latter it does makes you wonder how could the infected still be alive, both common and special. Because as 28 Days/Weeks Later has shown up, the infected were still biologically alive and needed stuff like water and food...but they obviously are too insane now to do that, considering also that they are puking their bloody guts out all the time.

Realistically the infected would have died on their own, including the special infected, especially since most of them really dont seem to be built for long term survival, especially the tank with the brutal strain its body goes through.

With that said, if they somehow have the infected still around all those years later, it could be a great oportunity at showing some real decay on those monsters and how the special infected changed further.

If its the former, as some suggested, a new group of survivors around some areas the first 2 games didnt explore. Altho I feel like 3 would need to spice up the gameplay or at least the plot a little, because just having survivors trying to be rescued by a military that, as most carriers/immune should know at this point, will either kill them or experiment on them will be rather too predictable now.

Some suggested if the next Left 4 Dead wouldnt be VR like Alyx was...and I did suggest they could make it a prequel where there are far less infected so its easier to kill them with a VR control set because if they threw you the same amount they did in the regular games, the VR player would get overwhelmed insanely easy. Maybe we could follow the original crew and how they all met...tho it would be sad to hear Bill without being voiced by his original VA Jim French.

No, Valve doesn't make games anymore.

Memes aside, L4D2 was released really soon after L4D(I hear because Valve bought the game near completion, it was a mess, they released it patched up and completely rebuilt it for 2, so L4D is kinda a Beta and 2 is the real first game) and it's sort of the same boat as TF2. We could easily be at TF4 and L4D6 by now and the franchises run into the ground.

However, Valve currently doesn't do minor update and faux innovation sequels. There are very few things I think I'd want in a L4D3. However Valve had also gone very much in the conservative side of things. I've played L4D2 about as much as I'd like. I actually wouldn't mind a 3 or 4 that had a new cast of 4 characters, some minor weapon additions and improvements, stuff that CoD shits out yearly, just as an excuse to play the game some more.

As for plot, will beside Bill being the official death in The Sacrifice, it's kind of a shit outlook for all the characters. They are asymptomatic carriers. The helicopter pilots that save them and turn do so because they catch the virus from the protagonists. They cannot find sanctuary or community outside of other carriers because they'll cause an outbreak wherever they go. Even then, carrier societies would probably be hunted for extermination as being a threat to the uninfected.

It's also not that serious a universe, if we get a new L4D I suspect it'll perpetually be a new perspective of the same outbreak and not an actual development of the world.

from what I remember (can't remember where I read it, think it was a post mortem or regarding turtle rock), valve wanted to bring it in-house after 1, since they had the lead from portal working on it or something. any "mess" is probably a "turtle rock was never good" meme after evolve. especially since 2 is worse in most aspects imo.

tbqh I'm done with zombies at this point. just give me robots, cyberpunk and shit. less arizona sunshine, more raw data. or heck just do sci-fi zombies a la dead space (although the l4d brand isn't really suited for it, even less after 2 wenz down the LE WACKY FRYING PAN road).

L4D2 truly felt more like a horror comedy rather than actual horror. Maybe thats why I always prefered the campaigns from 1 (tho I still enjoy 2's just fine).

I couldn't imagine an L4D3 being fun if its still using the same mechanics at the other 2. I honestly always preferred Killing Floor to L4D because the controls didn't feel like I was fighting a N64 controller.

That being said, I'm kind of meh on zombie shooters now. I think Dead Rising failing as a franchise shows that most people are over the genre.

I think Dead Rising's failures are due to internal factors, like the dev teams losing track of what made the first two fun, or good game design. Not to say that the zombie genre hasn't gotten a bit stale, but there is still room for good games to make an impact.

You're not wrong, it's a multi faceted issue for sure with Dead Rising. I think them going all grimdark didn't help.

I wouldn't mind a zombie game like the old Mercenaries games on PS2 but with total character customization, etc. It seems to be today you either get a survival crafting game with zombies or just generic thoughtless shooter.
