Left 4 Dead & L4D2

You could almost say the games were left for dead.

They really have been. 1 is very sparsely populated now save for some diehard fans and trolls.

2 still has decent numbers, although not nearly as much as it used to. It is filled to the brim with shitty custom servers which have a ton of bots running around. In both games, it's also pretty easy for trolls to mess up games thanks to being able to mod in alternate emote lists that allow you to spam your character screaming and saying things you normally wouldn't be able to, team kill somebody and then immediately setting up a vote to trick them into accidentally kicking one of the other teammates or starting the whole campaign over again. As funny as it is, I'd imagine that probably drove quite a few people away as well.

With over 1500 hours in L4D2, I can state there's a number of issues. @Overcast illustrates a number of them.

Another is the asymmetric nature of Versus. Proper coordination between Infected is absolutely necessary, which means you better have voice-comms. A halfway competent survivor team can bulldoze their way through a level, and it can be VERY hard to catch up.

It's also clear Valve really isn't supporting the game any more (beyond minor fixes which crop up now and then). Which is... understandable, I guess, but this is why you get those custom servers. Mutation missions alone won't cut it.

Meh, I still really love the duology (hope I fucking get to live to see it become a trilogy but Im keeping my hopes low). I still play it with custom content and people on it can be quite friendly (not always but sometimes). The only issue is that 2 kind of made 1 a bit obsolete, unless you are looking for a purist experience without melee weapons and the OG crew/infected only.
Still think Bill's death is one of the saddest deaths ever in gaming.

I still am a fan of the games, though I am a purist that wished that they kept the NuInfected and melee weapons seperate to L4D2, with no copy-pasted L4D1 levels full of NuInfected and melee weapons added to it.

I wish they did make a L4D3, part of the fun was getting new characters, locations and seeing in what messed up ways the Infected kept mutating.

Ive only ever watched one stream of it, and it was a pro match between girls and it was nothing but camping ladders and other shit gimmicks to get around mechanics. I liked the concept as a whole, but it just became one of those "Okay, we can expect the exact same points of attack and its down to execution who wins". That's not a constant zombie onslaught; that's chess with added filler zombies.

I read an article about that one escape room map at #1 on the Workshop, and how it's actually stolen and replicated and monetized. Kind of a weird drama in a vacuum community. https://www.reddit.com/r/Steam/comments/cy6api/helms_deep_reborn_the_most_subscribed_workshop/

because I stopped caring after valve dropped 1 like trash and immediately moved to 2 which imo for pve was worse in almost every regard. and as mentioned didn't get better, killing of bill was just the frosting.
2 seemed to have less 'horror' to it and more goofiness. I think most people might have only went onto it because it had the old levels.

One thing I don't get- Why didn't they just add some of the new movesets of the Nrw Specials onto the old Specials? Give the Boomer the alternate ability to spit acid, give the Tank the ability to charge and pound, and the Hunter the ability to wrestle a Survivor away and drop them off a ledge. Even have the smoker emit a poisonous gas when it died. It would at least add to the horror aspect that 'they're evolving' and avoid having to add a bunch of new Specials that when you think of it, could easily be made redundant.

Left 4 Dead 1 - Straight up Horror and serious
Left 4 Dead 2 - Horror Comedy ala ZombieLand (with ocassional serious moments)
I like both for different reasons, altho I still prefer the OG crew, they truly felt like a family after a while while 2's still feel like a bunch of close friends on some wacky zombie adventure.

Oh almost forgot.

I never uninstall L4D2. It's not dead enough that it's ever a chore to find a lobby of decent teammates for most game modes. Though I would have thought that the World War Z game would have absolutely destroyed L4D2 playerbase since I hear it is basically L4D3 with the serial numbers filed off.

I just wish the grognards who exclusively populate the Survival mode lobbies were a little more patient with less skilled players, like the people in the more popular game mode lobbies.

You know, plotwise you realize that the second crew are either dead or in big trouble after the parish....
The military and CEDA arent the solution for carriers, since they will just conclude its best to kill them (instead of you know, using them as zombie killing forces with all the guns they need), that is what happened with the first crew after blood harvest (as shown in the sacrifice comic).
Its not confirmed but highly implied the survivors still carry the virus and they can still spread it, so the OG crew decided to ditch the rescues and settle on some island to either spend the rest of their lives or to wait out the infection 28 weeks laters styled.
The second crew however isnt aware they are carriers and the military would probably shoot them eventually, Nick even brings up that up
Couch: the military will care for us
Nick: or they will just line us against a wall and shoot us

Since we never got Left 4 Dead 3, we will likely never know and Valve isnt interested in making any comics set in the universe anymore...

But from what we so have, the OG crew made it to an island thanks to Bill's sacrifice and the second crew either got killed off or had to escape the military to an unknown fate...

And as usual, Valve ends their series right when the mains are facing certain death...

The Left 4 Dead games were the most fun I've ever had playing online, I hate that Valve abandoned it along with Half-Life and Portal.

This thread just hurts. I had so many hours of fun playing L4D2 (never played 1 and learned no reason to buy/go back to it), and that's coming from someone who doesn't play multiplayer games that often.

I hate the new Valve. I mean, I like Steam, and I loved playing TF2 with its constant new events/updates... but most of their "games as a service" shit I don't care about at all. Does anyone actually play DotA2? Are people still buying hats and crates in TF2?

At least we might get TF3 at some point since it's a money-printing F2P, microtransaction-filled multiplayer game...

Something I love about the two games are their openings. The first games opening is about barely surviving crossing the street.
Then in the second game it’s like “YEEEEEHAAAAWW” and I love it.

Its almost symbolic how they arent trying to be scary anymore but fun.

It’s like the first two alien movies, with the first being horror and the second being an action movie. I think that’s how sequels should pay off and build off the previous installments.
