Legend of Zelda thread - Lorefags GTFO!

Nah that's your problem.

Breath of the Wild was packed with joy and whimsy.
It's a good start. BotW was like a really polished beta. Now they just need to add real content. I'm playing Fallout: New Vegas and I think it might be a bit too densely packed. I don't think it needed a dozen factions and tons of boring quests, with samey locales.

BotW went in the opposite direction. It was a comparatively diverse landscape with barely anything to do but dick around. BotW2 should find a middleground between those two designs, cut the fat but actually make the world not feel empty.

The thing with BotW is that the world feels like you are the one exploring, and that makes it enjoyable to play around with it, but it has the big downside of having a lot of downtime if you dont know what to do in it, the game is very fun, but you need to be in the correct mindset to be able to enjoy it for long periods of time, especially if you are someone that wants a more traditional experiance.
The trailers for TotK seems to point to the sky islands to have more traditional dungeons, so I am sure fans of the older style will be much more happy with it

sorry for double posting, but I've been playing the original the legend of zelda, and I have to say that I don't think I like it, my biggest problem with it is that the combat feels extremely stiff and the enemies are too erratic, then the overworld exploration feels like just total trial and error. The dungeons are fun tho.

I agree with you on a lot of what you said. It's surprising how important diagonal movement makes an overhead game feel better.

It starts to feel a lot better after the first two or three dungeons as you learn the overworld and start to really get into the game designers' minds. That said, you will probably eventually need to use a guide to figure out all the stupid bullshit you have to do to unlock dungeons in the second half of the game.

Not saying you are wrong, I started enjoying it more after the 3rd dungeon, but the wizzrobes in the 6th one make me want to kill myself

NES has only a few games that truly hold up and are 10/10. Neither Zelda makes the list. It's like, Super Mario Bros. 3 and
That remake of Zelda 1 for GBC that was to be released alongside Oracles would have been great. Zelda 1's very primitive and could have really used the update.

yeah Oracles were nice but were very "well, we've been making 2d zelda for like twenty years so we'd have to be literally fucking retarded to screw it up" like later RHCP efforts
they're nice enough jams but by that point you could probably literally script a machine to do procedural generation if you _really_ tried so some monkeys making it work as a game is like, okay it's a nice enough game, you want a medal?
like those TG-16 knock off Zeldas, New Topia or whatevers

That would be really cool, Nintendo has a pretty good track record with remakes, even if they're not perfect. I think Zelda 2 has even more potential, let WayForward take a crack at it (Shantae kinda reminds me of it).

If Famicom counts there is DQ IV. I think that one holds up. And, uh, Duck Hunt is fine for what it is. Duck Hunt/Mario is a good pack-in for early to mid-life cycle NES buyers.

Castlevania?
Ninja Gaiden?
Megaman 2?
that one game where you play as a werewolf with robot arms that has the really awesome shot of the werewolf in front of a giant American flag for some reason?
You're leaving me in suspense my nigga
(please be that werewolf game it sounds fucking kickass)

One thing that I think would be interesting, is if Nintendo actually made a game based on the "old Link" concept that has been floating around in the fanart world. Basically, Link as a middle-aged, grizzled veteran and perhaps a game based on how much things have changed for Link and Hyrule as the years went by. It would be best portrayed as a darker Zelda game, but not full-on "grimdark" territory.

I really don't think there is another game that's the epitome of its genre on NES, or near perfect in general like SMB3. Not to say there aren't any other good games, but when you go play something like Ninja Gaiden you need to make mental concessions to forgive it along the way and make excuses for dogshit design you encounter, which isn't so for SMB3.

Like, "wow these cutscene sure were ahead of their time, and this feels great to play! o-oh, haha, wow that bird sure is in a pretty fucked up position but it's okay, it's still fu--woah! that guy's just gonna keep respawning infinitely right there, what the fuck can I do?! its cool tho, it's...it's supposed to be hard!"

But what game are you describing with the werewolf and all that? I gotta try that.

I found it, guess it's just called Werewolf which is disappointing I was hoping for something stupider which would be way better.

They should do it in a dark souls 1 style world layout with majora's mask atmosphere.

Its not a game (the game sucks) but Dynowarz perfected game boxart and has never been beaten.
