OFF is a 2007 French videogame that gained larger recognition circa 2011 or 2012 or so when it received a pair of dodgy English translations. Its the first RPG Maker game that ever came to my attention, and to be honest with you one of the only such games to ever do so. Its certainly the first example of an RPG Maker game I can think of that actually broke out of its usual audience of weebs and Final Fantasy fans to reach some kind of wider demographic, even if that may have ultimately been a deal with the devil in some respects.

The plot of the game is fairly straightforward; you are a baseball player, circa the early 1900s or so (at least this is everyone's best guess) and you arrive in a strange fragmentary world with a singular mission: destroy ghosts, demons and other spirits. With your baseball bat.

The game itself is influenced by Earthbound (don't leave yet), again being one of the first games that comes to my mind to actually do that, long before YIIK effectively killed the idea. Its also said to have influenced many games that have come and gone since, including Undertale. Which I think might be people reading a bit deeper into the comparison than they probably should. Like Undertale though, this game had a powerful explosion in popularity on Tumblr, during the heyday of Tumblr no less. Unlike Undertale though its popularity was very brief and mercifully much of its fandom moved on to the likes on Undertale and other more sensational games after the fact.

I discovered this game independently through a list of short horror webgames around 2013 and, going into it blind, was immediately enthralled with its surrealist imagery and plot. Ultimately the way the plot plays out is quite brilliant I think, and its simple presentation leaves it largely unfettered by a lot of the overthinking and sentimentalism that I always felt dragged Undertale down too heavily for me to ever get into it. Infact if you think you know me well you may be surprised that I would like something like this at all, but as the game unfolds you'll probably see where the appeal lies. Its my ambition to present this game to a more cynical audience as I think the Tumblr crowd has abused its characters and the possible meanings behind it enough. The game is a lot more matter of fact about its grim nature than Ye Olde Tumblr would have you believe.

I'll be using the original 2.0 Translation which contains a few minor translation errors and one rather major one, but I'm deeply unhappy with the 2016 update and the 3.0 Translation since they very much subtly recolor the game's dialogue to be evocative of more recent releases and mindsets. This is a game that, however slightly, did predate Current Year and I would prefer to keep it as I remember it.

Please avoid spoilers in this thread even if you have them tagged, this is a very simple, highly linear game.
Speculation is fine though.

Q: Two LPs at once?
A: I seem to have acquired some extra free time lately, and OFF is a simple game I have played numerous times that does not require much concentration and will not include any audience participation. I can easily update it in between XPiratez sessions, and if I need to neglect one game or the other it’s a much easier task to neglect OFF instead. I consider myself in no rush to complete this one quickly.

Q: What are the differences between the translations?
A: I'd have to spoil the entire game to really get into them. If you understand French I encourage you to try the original version and decide for yourself which English version is the most fitting. Broadly speaking, 1.0 is very primitive and contains a lot of broken English and profanity where it doesn't belong, 2.0 has a lot of awkward and questionable translations that ultimately became somewhat iconic and 3.0 is technically more accurate for certain lines but it preserves the stuff from the previous translations that people had gotten used to, and its contaminated with Current Year.

Q: How heavily Tumblrshit is this?
A: It became Tumblrshit, yes. It was not designed for a Tumblr audience in mind though.

Q: Does this contain tranny shit?
A: No, this was made in 2007 and fortunately predates that, though the latest translation of the game that I’m not using contains an option to be referred to as gender-neutral.

Q: Does this contain furry shit?
A: No, fortunately.

Q: How much is this like Undertale?
A: Vaguely. Undertale might as well be as different as you could possibly be from OFF, though some of Undertale is acknowledged as being evocative of OFF. OFF tremendously predated Undertale though so I consider it largely irrelevant to this discussion.

Q: I’ve been told this has something to do with Homestuck?
A: My understanding is that this game’s huge surge in popularity came after it was shared in a Homestuck discussion group. The game has nothing directly to do with Homestuck though.

Q: Will you discuss any of the fan games?
A: Yes. But, later. Don’t bother asking me about them in the thread because it will be easier to explain when the time comes. However I would appreciate it if you limited all discussion and even mention of the fan game Home until I bring it up.

Q: Have either of the two people involved with this been canceled/trooned out?
A: I have no idea. I don't believe either of them have, but I do not follow social media at all so I really don't know. I am aware Mortis Ghost's Tumblr is a mess of jokes and deliberately false details about himself so I have a creeping suspicion the man has a similar opinion to me about the merits of social media.

Q: Where can I get it?
Right here, I have preserved the 2.0 Translation incase the internet decides to forget it.
I have also included the excellent soundtrack by Alias Conrad Coldwood here.

Other Resources and Links:
OFF Wiki: Back in my day there were two of these, and they seem to have become the victims of the rationalization between Wikia and Gamepedia buying each other out. I can't seem to find an archive of the second wiki which is a shame as it had some slightly different explanations of things I've always wondered about. Contains massive spoilers, of course.
Mortis Ghost 's Tumblr: Mostly just contains updates on his recent projects.
Unproductive Fun Time: Alias Conrad Coldwood's website, apparently, though this was the label that the original French version of OFF was released under.
Purification in Progress - Let's Play OFF by PanzerSkank: This is the only screenshot LP of this game i know of. I was actually on the fence about doing this game at all because this older LP really covers just about everything, but I feel my perspective may be different enough to justify it. This LP contains massive spoilers of course so you'll want to read it after I finish mine, I was including it here for transparency.

Oh shit it's OFF. I was planning on doing a LP of this when ever I got done with Ao Oni. Nice to see someone better at making LPs got to it first.

I didn't know the newest translation was woke. :cryblood: That a shame people would try to ruin this thinking they making it better.

I'll be watching the thread. Good luck L50LasPak.

I enjoyed the music enough when I play terraria I use the Off Music soundbank someone made.

My favorite song has to be Not Safe.

Just listen to that banging and whispers, and that voice you can't make out sounding distressed. Still freaks me out when I listen to it after all these years later.

I've heard about this game in passing, but never played it or (thankfully) been inundated by its Tumblr fandom.
This should be interesting. Looking forward to it!

I've never heard of this game, but I've always liked these weird rpgmaker maker games so this actually looks like something I would be into. I think I'll stick around for this.

Will I get to make Fooly Cooly “he swung the bat” references with reckless abandon?

Give yourself some credit man, you've been doing this longer than I have.

I didn't know the newest translation was woke. :cryblood: That a shame people would try to ruin this thinking they making it better.
In the scheme of things its only slightly woke to the disinterested observer, but that's still enough to leave a bad taste in my mouth.

Most jarring of all though in my opinion is that it includes a dedication card that I'm really trying not to talk about because I have plans involving things related to it and don't want that to overshadow the entire thread.

Will I get to make Fooly Cooly “he swung the bat” references with reckless abandon?
Probably, though my impression of The Batter is that he is a fully grown man. Might ruin the metaphor a little.

I know the feeling all too well. After seeing this kind of shit for years, you just grow so very tried of it being shoved down your throat. That even slightest thing with anything to do with it makes me get very disinterested, if not jaded and and cynical of the whole thing, rather then being able to enjoy it at fullest.

What? How the hell do you wokeify OFF?

It seems impossible. Will you be giving the details?
I'll probably dedicate an entire update to the third translation that is entirely composed of screenshots of any differences, good or bad. As it is I'll need to collect a few I know exist for later.

Tried getting into OFF a few years ago, but if you're used to the faster pace of later 'indie darlings' like Undertale then the only thing the game offers, in my opinion, is its art/music and possibly story. But sadly the games cult following has led to it's style of art being done to death and the kind of people that tend to mimic it happen to be people I usually avoid. Though I do still appreciate what it did for the indie scene at least initially. Might try revisiting it. I will say I am an attention deficit fag who cares more for action along with my story than the slower paced nature of a game like OFF, unless it really grabs me. Though I also don't care for vanilla RPG maker battling.

You would not believe my irritation when I found out that RPG Maker games, to this very day, do not have any means of taking screenshots natively. Meaning I had to figure out how to use OBS on the fly.

Before we begin, a diversion:
FAQ

Q : The font in OFF is unreadable.
A : Well that sucks, because I have done everything to solve this problem. Try installing "Profont.fon" into the "Fonts" folder of your computer.

Q : I don't understand the battle system ...
A : There's a tutorial available at the beginning of the game. If you still can't understand the system ... Hmmm... Go and ask for help at the Zanarkand forums (http://zanaforum.free.fr) or tinker with the system itself to figure it out.

Q : Can one go to Alma?
A : Close this file and play to see.

Q : I don't understand what's happening in this game.
A : That's normal, more or less. Things may become clearer to you as the game progresses, but I can't guarantee it.

Q : Are there any secret codes to unlock stuff?
A : There is one, namely this one: Down - Left - Up - Right - Z - J - B - D - B - Start.

Q : Will there be an OFF sequel?
A : We are thinking about it.

Q : How do you unlock the secret ending?
A : *Whistle* *whistle*...

Q : What does FAQ, Q and A mean ?
A : FAQ means Funfair And Questions, Q means Question and A Answer.

Q : What does DARPA mean ?
A : Department of Armament Research and umm ... Well, something like that. But this question has nothing to do with OFF anyway...

Q : Can I use your graphical resources?
A : (I don't think people would want to, but...) Help yourself. (If you do that, maybe think about putting my name into the credits of your game... please.) On the other hand, please avoid making games that are set in the same world as OFF. We have a backstory that we'd like to exploit to the core.

Q : Can I use your music in my game?
A : That's a more delicate issue. Contact Alias Conrad Coldwood first, please. (aliasconradcoldwood@gmail.com)

Q : About the music, I noticed that some of the loops aren't perfect...
A : Yak yak yaaaaaak ! They are perfect ! It's RPG Maker who doesn't like us.

Q : I'm stuck ...
A : I wrote a complete walkthrough. See it here:

Q : Can't you see that the French language is horrible?
A : An English version is expected in the unseeable future. Still, let me tell you that you have absolutely no taste. Information on the English version can be found here:
Translator's Note: The English version is out! Check it out here:
forum.starmen.net/forum/Fan/Games/OFF-by-Mortis-Ghost/

Q : I have another question, but I'm afraid of getting in contact with you because you seem like a bizarre fellow.
R : I left my email address below. Don't hesitate to contact me. I'd be happy to answer your questions.

You would do well to follow this by the way, I knew someone who played through almost the entire game without it and complained to me that the plot was hard to follow.

Little things endear me to this game, like the way that disclaimer is worded. I suppose I'm just really easily satisfied sometimes.

For the record I'll be using the in-game tracks to better fit the experience. Most of these are just clipped a little so they will more effectively loop.

Is now a good time to mention I've never actually played Earthbound?

I promise you I have a more efficient method of delivering dialogue than just screenshotting every line, I'm just putting it this way for now.

(Fourteen Residents Main Title Variation)

Screenshot 2022-03-17 05-07-59.png

The main title fades in gently over a slowed down and distorted variation of the main menu theme.

Screenshot 2022-03-17 05-40-24.png

Everything seems to be in working order, thought the movement is bit slippery. Off we go.

(Empty Warehouse - Out)

Screenshot 2022-03-17 05-08-27.png

There are these slow pans over major structures to introduce each zone. The SA LP had gifs for this kind of thing, and while I can capture footage in OBS now it turns out that Kiwi Farms very strongly dislikes the program I use to make gifs as it will almost never allow me to add them to my posts.

Already this early in the game we have one of my personal favorite tracks. Despite its simplicity its both calming and weirdly eerie, something that will be a theme as the game goes along. Unfortunately I can't loop music in these posts, but you can play along using the in-game tracks folder I included in the music download if you so desire.

Screenshot 2022-03-17 05-08-35.png

We're immediately greeted by a very strange solipsistic cat.

Judge1.png Nevertheless, I will introduce myself. I am The Judge, and I am aching to know your name, dear illusory interlocutor.
Note that "The" in "The Judge" is not actually capitalized in this line, but it is in the intro, so I have fixed it presuming its a translation error.

I felt like someone would claim I stole the dialogue portraits from the SA LP, so I'll be manually extracting them from each conversation because I like the idea of each one fitting its situation. Don't tell me I'm being difficult.

I've also hyperlinked the portrait to the sound that plays each time they say a line, you can click on it to hear it. In The Judge's case, its simply a cat pur.

Batter1.png
I'm The Batter. I've been assigned to a sacred mission.
The Batter has no dialogue noise.

Judge1.png
It is a pleasure. However, it is not the puppet I was addressing, but the puppeteer controlling it. What is your name, dear puppeteer?
Batter1.png
His name is L50. He can't talk to us.
The intro and The Batter addressing us directly weren't just for flavor it seems.

Batter1.png
However, he can hear and see everything.
Judge1.png
Even though you too are but an inexistent apparition in my eyes, let it be said that I am delighted to meet you as well, dear L50.
Batter1.png
I believe we're in need of your services.
Judge1.png
Many people are in need of my services, you know. Everybody loves cats.
I find people who hate cats are an endless source of amusement.

Judge1.png
We rub ourselves against their legs and purr in the most insistent manner. They adore that.
I promise I won't keep interrupting every other line like this, but I wanted to make note of how the dodgy translation renders some lines in a more archaic or stilted manner, such as "in the most insistent manner" rather than "in a most insistent manner". The 3.0 Translation would clean up a lot of these, which I think is a shame as the stilted wording helps with the surrealist bent. At least for me it does anyway, I'm sure at least one reader had already rolled their eyes at the idea of a grinning, sophisticated talking cat being presented to them for the 500th time.

Batter1.png
I'm not talking about that kind of help.
Judge1.png
I see... but what sort of service could I offer to an ectoplasmic entity?
Batter1.png
I have a sacred mission to fulfill.
Batter1.png
I must purify the world.
I believe I know someone like this.

Judge1.png
There is no objective more laudable than yours. I accept to serve you as a guide through this area, if it is of any help to you.

The Judge leaps up on to the next platform in a janky animation I unfortunately can't really bring across in text, so I take the chance to root around a little. I apparently missed screenshotting the item I got from that chest, a Luck Ticket. Those little brick things blocking the way cannot be moved or interacted with.

Screenshot 2022-03-17 05-09-53.png
Screenshot 2022-03-17 05-09-56.png

Judge2.png
Might you in fact be a creature of flesh and blood?
Batter2.png
I think so, yes.
Judge2.png
So I have been mistaken from the beginning. You did not even interrupt me in my deluded phantasms...
Judge2.png
This is relatively bizarre, I must say, for you are the first living being I was given a chance to encounter in this lieu.
Judge2.png
I had in fact concluded that Zone 0 was an empty land. Obviously I was misled.
Judge2.png
However, there exist other zones. And in those territories, the risk of hostile individuals attacking you in the most violent manner is quite high.
Judge2.png
Your sacred mission will likely lead you into these lands. Would you like me to teach you the art of violent confrontation?
I've personally always considered it a bad omen if I'm under a false impression about someone and they make no move to correct it right away.

Screenshot 2022-03-17 05-10-18.png

Screenshot 2022-03-17 05-10-19.png
Screenshot 2022-03-17 05-10-21.png

The battle transition is a simple white flash accompanied by this sound effect, then zooming in. The combat system is nothing special, just the bog standard RPG Maker system, and actually a rather dated version of it at that given this was made with RPG Maker 2003. But i will show this entire sequence just for the extra dialogue.

Screenshot 2022-03-17 05-10-23.png

Judge3.png
Your opponent however, in this case yours truly, will be located on the left, the correct place for a single combatant.
Judge3.png
At the beginning of combat, you will be confronted with a choice. You have to decide whether to "Attack", "Auto" or "Flee."
Judge3.png
"Attack" naturally permits you to engage the fight in the classical fashion.
Judge3.png
If "Auto" is your decision, the computer will make the strategic choices in your place, making you simply the spectator.
Judge3.png
Finally, "Flee", as its name indicates, is the option of the coward. I dehort this alternative.
Most of the battles in this game can be won using Auto. The computer will never heal though, so the player has to at least pay some attention to that. I do everything manually though anyway because the Auto function just makes me think of those horrible phone games that play by themselves. Even though it technically predates them.

Screenshot 2022-03-17 05-10-36.png

Judge3.png
Do not utilize the "Auto" function. The computer will not hold back and I would take the risk of dying, taking my secrets with me to the grave.
You of course lose the game if you kill The Judge here, whether on Auto or manually.

Screenshot 2022-03-17 05-10-40.png
Screenshot 2022-03-17 05-10-42.png
Screenshot 2022-03-17 05-10-46.png

Judge3.png
It is possible that you or your adversaries could avoid the barrage of attacks that you will throw at each other with slyness.
Judge3.png
On occasion, your cast iron will get you a critical hit, which will cause teeth to fly in heaps.
Lines like this one are how you win me over.

Judge3.png
But let us move on, if you are willing to. You may have noticed that when you chose "Attack" for the first time after you selected The Batter, a new window opened itself at the lower right-hand side of the screen.
Judge3.png
There, you have the choice between four new options. "Attack" leads to a sole strike against a likewise sole adversary. "Competence" permits you to use one of your special skills. "Objects" will grant you access to the items you are currently carrying. Finally, you have, yet again, the opportunity to flee. But remember: solely The Batter is responsible for that option in his personal menu.
Judge3.png
How about trying to utilize an object? Take this Luck Ticket and use it on The Batter's person with gratitude.
Its been said that the Competences menu is just a messy translation of a word that was really closer to Abilities, but its one of the few things never fixed in the various translations since its weird and different. Unfortunately this means The Batter's mana or Competence Points abbreviates to CP.

Screenshot 2022-03-17 05-11-09.png
Screenshot 2022-03-17 05-11-16.png
Screenshot 2022-03-17 05-11-20.png

Judge3.png
They may induce a resurgence of health points, or may be in and of themselves, powerful attacks.
Judge3.png
Nevertheless know this: any use of Competences leads to a consumption of Competence Points (CP). So I ask that you use these skills sparingly. Once your CP are completely consumed, it will be impossible to carry out heavy assaults. And if you happen to cross swords with a tougher opponent before being able to get some more CP, victory will be uncertain.
Use may lead to consumption of CP. Well, it is a French game after all.

Judge3.png
But try it right away. Choose "Competence" and try using "The Wide Angle", which will allow you to analyse your enemy.

Screenshot 2022-03-17 05-11-39.png
Screenshot 2022-03-17 05-11-40.png
Screenshot 2022-03-17 05-11-42.png

Given how wordy he is, I'm not exactly inclined to agree that The Judge is cryptic.

Screenshot 2022-03-17 05-11-43.png

Judge3.png
About the Wide Angle... Know that its analysis will always be based off the start of the battle. Thus, it may accidentally analyse adversaries you have already knocked out for a long time.
Judge3.png
The confrontation ends, theoretically, when the health points of your team, or all of your opponents, fall to zero. Take good care of your health if you want a successful career in purification.
Screenshot 2022-03-17 05-11-55.png

Judge2.png
Well, supposing your intelligence is on the same level with your undeniable capability of dealing bat blows to an innocent cat. Be it as it may, your training has not reached its end yet. Let me ask you to follow me, if you still want me as your guide.
Batter2.png
No tutorial, are you certain?
Judge2.png
So are you pretending to be able to handle the bat with virtuosity without even needing my wise pieces of advice? I hope for you that what you state is more than hot air meant to impress me, because that would be taking a high risk. But I will assume that this is not the case and that you are the fighter of value you claim to be.

It is a cube, hovering in midair, as you have likely noticed. Nevertheless, you will be able to differentiate it from similar ones by the contrast of bad taste it imposes on your view of its clashing color, defying any sensible course of plastic arts.
Hey! Don't talk shit about the color red like that.

Judge5.png
However do not judge it too quickly, because despite its criticisable appearance, this red cube is of undeniable use.
Judge5.png
Aside from rendering you the entirety of your health and competence points, it is capable of saving your progress and sending you to the nothingness.
Judge5.png
The nothingness is a lieu of transition outside of space itself, where you can travel from one point to another at the speed of light. I now invite you to try it out, in order to discover locations more populous than this deserted land.
Judge5.png
Open your wings, my dear companion, and hurry away towards the following zones without hesitation! Your only enemy is the fear that will grab you.
Screenshot 2022-03-17 07-47-04.png

I fucking love The Batter.

Judge5.png
Do not worry, I too travel a lot through the different zones of the world. We will newly meet one another eventually without a doubt.
Judge5.png
Ah! By the by, take this. This object of a curious name will be the key that permits you to enter Zone 1.

Have I clarified that you can at any time consult your inventory and characteristics by pressing the Esc key?

Here's everything interesting we can see in the menu. The Leo Card we just received is greyed out and only displays if its highlighted in the inventory. The Batter's stats are more than a little cryptic though. Savior?

Oh, man, this one. I remember seeing part of a no-commentary video LP years ago, probably played a decent part in fueling my interest in what-the-fuck pseudo-horror. Let's see how this goes.

The SA LP had gifs for this kind of thing, and while I can capture footage in OBS now it turns out that Kiwi Farms very strongly dislikes the program I use to make gifs as it will almost never allow me to add them to my posts.
Might be the size of them? Mine started having issues uploading or showing properly in the thread once they went over 10MB or so.
If you want to take the nuclear option, you can use a tool to convert them to .webm files instead. The size might not gel exactly with the screenshots, but they're usually like 90% smaller and have fewer problems loading.

I forgot to ask, but how is the post format so far? if it looks like shit or is unreadable I'd like to know sooner rather than later.

Might try revisiting it. I will say I am an attention deficit fag who cares more for action along with my story than the slower paced nature of a game like OFF, unless it really grabs me. Though I also don't care for vanilla RPG maker battling.
The gameplay is really simplistic, there's no arguing that. I suspect having a childhood full of tedious flash RPGs has helped my patience out in the long run.

Seems fine and easy to follow. The way you're handling the text boxes is working out well; there's little room for confusion between who's talking or when you're interjecting. The only thing I could think to suggest out of hand is to condense consecutive text boxes from one character into a single quote box if that would make it easier for you, but I don't expect the game to be some janky War and Peace of an indie narrative that would really need that kind of measure.

Aah, OFF. One of my favorite indie games ever. I've played it in its original language and after it was a big hit for tumblrinas.

I'm a big fan of the artworks and soundtracks, Mortis Ghost's art always interested me, it's rather simple yet it has its charm.

The twist about Batter being evil was pretty cool for me back in the day, Bad Batter's design horrified me (in a good way)
