Let's Sperg Let's Play XCOM Terror From The Deep (Completed) - This is gonna hurt

hey, I have the highest single stat of anyone in my group of recruits!

...Well, that stat is throwing accuracy and I don't know how good that is, and my mc stat is a pathetic 17, but still!

Also: Shout-out's to @Swiss46 for bravely taking all the anal probes for the rest of us on that last mission. Your service will be remembered.

This game looked interesting, but the fact that the aliens look so stereotypical and uninspired is kind of a turn-off to me.
Not really, but ok.
Big disagree and there's plenty of cool looking aliens to come in Xcom and TFTD.
I'll still put him in the name bank anyway.

On second thought he does have a mild point about the designs looking generic, but that applies more to the first game with its deliberate attempt to include aliens based on sightings in popular culture at the time, such as the Sectoids being the Greys, the Floaters being the Flatwoods Monster, etc.

They still show a reasonable amount of personality though. Additionally when game designers try to design an alien race that really is alien it usually ends up looking terrible.

I mean, they’re good designs as any to build a foundation for an IP with. Really, having the aliens be based on supposed real life sightings makes the game potentially that much more immersive, as if something like that could happen in real life.

There’s always that slim chance that we’ll all get drafted into fighting actual alien invaders. A bunch of spergs and shitposters goofing around on an LP thread could actually be what decides our future.

And God help us if that happens.

With how liberal @L50LasPak and the ayylmaos are with grenades? I don't think a single fish, crustacean or mollusk was left alive within three miles of that combat zone.
*screeching peta noises*
*from being anal probed by aliens after the world votes to have XCOM sacrifice them*

I should probably remember to send an interceptor to scan this area for an Alien Colony.

screen001.png
screen002.png

I should also probably remember to check the wiki so I can remember what Terror From The Deep's supply ships look like.

screen005.png
screen007.png
screen008.png

Off to a great start. HiramTheGirft is hit by a stun bomb and knocked out. At least we got one of them.

screen013.png
screen016.png
screen018.png

Dear Leader and Pocket Dragoon are able to zero the one with the stun launcher, but the Squad Leaders waste no time getting to Swiss46 again.

screen021.png
screen023.png
screen024.png

Its confirmed, the game just straight up spawns one of these assholes holding a DPL weapon right on top of the Triton. There's not even any tactical benefit to this since the first shot would most likely kill the alien. Its just there to fuck you.

screen025.png
screen026.png

I have a reputation for being literal about everything, but I honestly didn't think I was being literal in this case.

screen027.png
screen028.png
screen029.png

There's still quite a few ways this battle could go horribly wrong.

screen033.png
screen034.png
screen035.png

Speak of the devil.

screen040.png
screen041.png

Just a precaution sir.

screen038.png
screen043.png

Much like Ethereals before them, Tasoths regularly take two grenades to kill even though they have nothing special for armor.

screen045.png
screen046.png
screen047.png

Brace!

screen048.png
screen050.png
screen051.png

@Swiss46 is killed in the blast, but at least I distanced the rest of my troops enough from each other to avoid anyone else being killed.

screen054.png
screen055.png
screen056.png

There's no edge of the map to save us this time. @Niggermancer is vaporized. The best I can do is just spread rookies out and hope the enemy runs out of ammo before I run out of rookies.

screen057.png
screen059.png

Great, as if we didn't already have enough to worry about.

screen061.png
screen063.png
screen064.png

Another shot takes down @JongleJingle. To make matters worse, HiramTheGrift is mortally wounded by the blast, though he lucked out by somehow being far enough away to not be instantly killed.

screen065.png
screen067.png
screen069.png

I have Pocket Dragoon take the risk of running outside to pick up Hiram even though NerdShamer is under alien control. NerdShamer is fortunately pointed the opposite direction and it goes off without a hitch.

screen071.png
screen072.png
screen073.png

I have no idea how this dingus hasn't been killed yet.

screen076.png
screen085.png
screen092.png

My next plan is to send troops out in a long staggered line and into the two reefs we're pretty close to, using each one as a barricade between explosions to hopefully prevent the entire force from being wiped out in one hit. Catgirls leads the way. Figuring I can use all the help I can get, I have Pocket Dragoon and Willy start working on Hiram and Dear Leader.

screen096.png
screen097.png
screen098.png

Slow and steady wins the race in this game. Catgirls is joined by R00T, ChucklesTheJester, Considered HARMful and eventually Future Physical Violence.

screen101.png
screen104.png
screen105.png

Not shown: NerdShamer panicking just about every single turn.

screen110.png
screen111.png
screen112.png

In a pattern I'm beginning to worry about, Pocket Dragoon bungles another grenade throw. Though this time fortunately it lands only two spaces away from him and he's able to sweep it back up.

screen118.png
screen120.png
screen122.png

I begin to get confident enough to have troops advance through open ground since I haven't seen a single DPL shot after the first volley. Seems its just a matter of waiting out the enemy. The USO is spotted, and to nobody's surprise its the exact same as last time.

screen124.png
screen126.png
screen128.png

I have Dragoon dispose of that armed grenade by bombing around the entrance. Meanwhile the aliens continue their assault on NerdShamer.

screen130.png
screen138.png
screen141.png

Catgirls and Chuckles form the first breaching team with Future Physical Violence and Considered HARMful covering them.

screen145.png
screen146.png

I get a little ahead of myself and breach earlier than I probably should have.

screen149.png
screen150.png
screen151.png

One of the aliens gives chase and shoots @Catgirls are Love in the back of the head.

screen153.png
screen154.png

Only then does Considered HARMful get reaction fire. Though judging by where that first hit went Catgirls was screwed either way.

screen157.png
screen159.png
screen164.png

The aliens are terrible at defending this model of submarine for some reason. You'd think they'd be smart enough to wait above that stairwell and just throw grenades at anyone who tries to go up there, but they insist on coming down to meet us.

screen167.png
screen168.png
screen170.png

@SailingtheSaltySeas scores reaction fire on the last alien and kills it. Unfortunately for him the alien had already thrown a grenade at his feet.

screen172.png
screen173.png
screen174.png

I notice there haven't been any promotions for awhile. I figure its probably time for our next batch of soldiers.

screen175.png
screen177.png

In addition to our new recruits I get together enough supplies to outfit a defense team at Shark Trip incase the need arises.

screen180.png

HiramTheGrift can count himself lucky as he's the second soldier in the entire game to actually be wounded instead of instantly killed.

screen181.png
screen182.png

Here it is, this game's equivalent to the Blaster Launcher of the previous game. It only works underwater, which is fine by me as the land missions don't need to be any more miserable than they already are. Once we research the ammunition Artifact Sites should theoretically become a breeze.

screen186.png
screen187.png

The Transmission Resolver at Vulcania finishes construction. Meanwhile, I get a shot of Shark Trip's progress. I plan on this base being used to manufacture the ultimate craft much like last time.

screen190.png
049.png
screen192.png

Work on the DPL is complete. Dear Leader and Pocket Dragoon are immediately equipped with the weapon and as much ammunition as they can reliably carry.

screen200.png

The new recruits at both Vulcania and Shark Trip arrive not long afterwards.

Newcomers: @A Clockwork Soybean, @Rack Of CDs

screen201.png

Here's the readout for the Transmission Resolver. Looks like the aliens are looking to infiltrate Japan again. We'll see if we're early enough to put a stop to that.

screen202.png
screen203.png
screen205.png

screen206.png
screen207.png

Probably not going to have any reason to use the DPL launchers this mission. Though its not like there's any shortage of ammo for the damn things.

screen211.png
screen213.png
screen214.png

Lobstermen are sure to remain a pain in the ass until we finish work on the MC Disruptors.

screen222.png
screen225.png
screen227.png
screen229.png
screen230.png

Some good reaction fire from Willy here.

screen232.png
screen239.png
screen241.png

You'll notice the second one is dead in the first screenshot here. I didn't miss someone shooting it; it just expired from its wounds since I have Alien Bleeding turned on. Doesn't take long for the third to go down.

screen242.png
screen243.png
screen244.png

Now that we have over 35 recruits there's room for everyone to get promoted to maximum capacity. Willy takes his rightful place as third in command.

screen245.png
screen246.png
screen249.png

With the MC Disruptor research complete, all that's left is for the Technicians to manufacture a handful of them so we can get this party started. Research now goes into the ultimate craft, starting with Alien Sub Construction. Curiously, Terror From The Deep requires you to research the strongest power armor in the game first before you can progress anywhere along the ultimate submarine route. Which again means if you missed getting a live Deep One earlier, you're just fucked. Can you imagine how shitty this game was when it was full of bugs and there were no internet guides to tell you how to avoid them?

screen253.png

The Council is overjoyed with our progress, though you can see that our expenses are still just barely behind our funding. I order another round of Gauss weapons to be manufactured to generate some extra spending money.

screen254.png
screen255.png

One step closer.

screen257.png
screen258.png

Ugh. At least we can give the new equipment a test run this time.

Next Time: Nukes and robots will hopefully let me speedrun these fucking Artifact Sites.

Damn, terminated again. Whats worse, it seems we're getting our asses kicked more harder than usual!

QUICK, INSTITUTE THE CONSCRIPTION PROGRAM! IF A 10 YEAR OLD CAN SHOOT STRAIGHT, HE'S LEGAL TENDER!

Plus, it's legal since the world is now an Orwellian hellhole! Benefits for everybody except the fucking xeno scum!

Nice, I came back stronger.

Edit: except for my actual strength lol

HiramTheGrift can count himself lucky as he's the only soldier in the entire game to actually be wounded instead of instantly killed.
Didn't that happen to me earlier? Then I quickscoped some nerd through a window and I think I was out for a while. Or is that a death roll, I forget how wounding works.

All I'm aware of is you being killed off earlier. So far I haven't had to discount anyone from combat because they were wounded. Maybe i'll find it when I put the table of contents together or something.

My mistake, I just remembered my hitpoints looking scary (especially after everyone? prior seemingly oneshotted) and not doing anything in the next one. You even had a screenshot of the medkitting.
