During his Detroit: Become Human playthrough he made some mild references to people refusing to vote for Clinton after Sanders dropped out and that leading to Trump being elected.

I wonder how slowbeef feels when he looks at the current state of the hobby he likes to think he founded. It's full of people who are doing better than he ever did, one gamer after another who can get a million views on a single video. On top of that, there's a booming industry in Japan of 'virtual youtubers' who pull in 4-5 figures worth of viewers and a steady flow of money every time they stream. All this is going on while he, the guy who likes to say he invented the genre, is more or less forgotten by it.

His jealousy towards Pewdiepie and Doug Walker (of all people) was pretty blatant when he tried to gatekeep them. I can only imagine how he feels when he sees someone pretending to be a dog-eared anime girl getting more money and attention on a slow day than he ever got at his peak.

SGF has been around the internet for almost 12 years now. Considering the retards from SA he's friends with and the sort of people that show up on his stream chat I can totally imagine him being constantly pressured into talking about politics on his channel, but he still plays it pretty smart by not joining them every time they start tweeting about the latest outrage.

I feel like the fact that the most political he's ever gotten publically in over a decade was a mild reference to trump last year and sharing two tweets calling JK Rowling a dumbass should prove that he's not nearly as far gone as you're thinking tbh.

He's not particularly entertaining, and from what I remember the few times I've watched him, he's not exactly the best gamer. He's just... there. There, just pushing those buttons and making boring commentary.
I just figured he was still making his little gaming videos it to do it since he used to talk about his day job and increasing his education and whatnot. Guess that midlife crisis hit him a lot worse than expected.

Slowbeef was the straight man. Diabeetus was the funny man. Seldom was there a video where Slowbeef wasn't opposite to a funny man like Proteus versus Diabeetus playing opposite to another funny man. Maybe it was intentional, maybe it was accidental, but you can't have two funny men because comedy can't thrive without juxtaposition, and they avoided this. A funny man without a straight man is just a clown, and a straight man without a funny man is just an average, unassuming person.

So when Slowbeef streams, he's just an average, unassuming person. Nobody's going to tune in for that. The droll commentary and underperforming gameplay are just accents to it.

The Straight Man/Funny Man has been around for the entirely of recorded humor. It develops independently or nearly so in pretty much every culture. This is because humor is mainly about contrast.
No one knows why humans developed an abstract sense of humor, just like they are uncertain why the Germans didn't. But it is possibly an emergent defense mechanism of the complex human brain to keep you from going insane when the world doesn't conform to your mind's predictive models.
When its two "funny men", unless they are masters at the art, you just have absurdity with the only contrast being the audience's frame of reference.

I saw some of the recordings of that on youtube and I did think it was amusing in the sense that riffing dumb shit is amusing. Though I remember the blood whistle story did go on way too long and it wasn't funny anymore at one point.
