Let's Players originating from Something Awful - ft. VoidBurger, General Ironicus, Bob Kamoc

Phantom Pain was 60+ hours of dicking around in an empty open world map ballooning soldiers and it ended with the dumbest robot fight plot twist in the series. I get that chip is the metal gear guy so he's doing it for completion's sake, but frankly he's got an uphill battle because this is a damn boring game to play, so I don't know how he's going to make it interesting to watch.

Yeah yeah, I know a bunch of you love the game. I just miss when metal gear had an actual story and conversation codecs instead of monotony and lazy audio logs that explain the setup so they didn't have to bother thinking of a natural way to show it.

I think you're right and this is why I think he took so long to even start it.

I'm hoping he doesn't 100% this one on camera and just shows off the stupid and funny stuff.

He knows, and his strategy is doing three playthroughs in one (clean stealth, open combat, meme run) to provide variety and show off the details. He won't bother with S-ranks because they're "basically speedruns" and cuts or fast forward most of the travel. A good chunk of the runtime so far has actually been the meme playthrough, where he does dumb shit and tries to accomplish (or fuck up) missions in roundabout ways. He's also separating the cassette tapes into their own videos for anyone who doesn't care for them.

What's worth keeping in mind is that Chip is likely one of the only LPers attempting an MGSV LP which is both thorough and watchable. Most content creators had to choose one of those two. That's not an easy task, but he's putting more effort it into than anyone else I know of and not only is that commendable, I think the results will show.

It's reminding me of revengence where he would do an entertaining run then rewind to show the S rank run. It still might crash and burn, but not for lack of trying.

I remember Chip saying he did five perfect runs of the final boss for Revengence just so he could make sure the music was perfect. Stuff like this is why the Farms play softball with him; he's a perfectionist who clearly cares for his craft.

He absolutely deserves credit for this. Call LPs dumb if you want - and they are if you expect to make a career of them - but he's always understood the importance of doing it well instead of just going through the motions.

He's had sense enough to make sure his talent showed in his hobby work turning into a respectable prtfolio. I hope for his sake someone not Volition takes note. He could do some really good stuff for a marjeting department somewhere. Dude has talent. The shame is there's tons of talented unemployed video editors.

Yeah, I really hope he considers way more than video game companies for employment. When you're a subject of a kiwi farms community watch thread and we still compliment your skill that says something about your abilities.

I like Chip and Ironicus's LPs, generally, but people massively exaggerate Chip Cheezum's dedication and technical skill imo.
Practising before recording, doing retakes and editing out boring stuff are just basic things for content creators and have been for a really long time.
And most of his knowledge about the games he makes LPs for is just trivia that you can get from 20 minutes of Googleing and reading wiki pages and interviews.

The way their fanbase talks about them kind of reminds me of how the Channel Awesome fanbase venerates the various people from CA as if they're pioneers of comedy and internet content, when, really, they're decent at best and are made to look a lot better than they actually are by the sea of garbage that's the standard for Youtube.
C&I's TV Tropes page describes them as "putting insane amounts of time and effort into each LP," but you could just search Youtube for game retrospectives, reviews and video walkthroughs and find a billion videos that took as much time/effort/research as a given episode/series of one of their LPs.

I think people here don't exaggerate what he does so much as any praise of him tends to appear emphatic when in the other hand we're discussing his politics and the people surrounding him. The line between content and creator is naturally drawn wide for rhetorical purposes.

It's also not accurate to compare entire LPs to individual video projects (docs, reviews, etc.) because the former is an ongoing workload.

While you're right that anyone could do what Chip does, the sad part is that most people DON'T. Most LPs are shit. Either the recording is awful or the commentary is useless and boring or the gameplay is incompetent or some combination of all three.

Chip's basically Olympic high jumping over a very low bar set by the LP community. Should he be venerated for that? Not really, but he should get some credit for not taking the easy way out and just shitting out boring Minecraft videos where he calls people fags and cunts (*cough*PDP*cough*)

I really don't get his appeal even in that period where LPs were still shot on camera. I always found Chip boring as shit when I saw him, even in that dearth period.
Tbf I liked Research Indicates style way more back then.

I don't think anyone is putting him on a pedestal. We're just noting he does have a talent, unlike some others in this thread.

So, next episode, they are gonna have the Rape Tapes on them, prefacing them with "gone too far" and putting a warning in front of the video.

Really wonder what the conversation is going to be.

Also, Voidburger apparently can't handle people trying to help her in a puzzle game, but when she gets a suggestion on how to solve the problem, she essentially says she is too lazy for that.

Also, apparently, she really hates "Snitch Tagging" (which I didn't know that exists) which is essentially being a pussy about shittalking people on Twitter.

Ironicus will give the expected, boilerplate "yeahhhh, so there's that..." or similar and Chip will respond with similar, it'll be brought up that this isn't the first time that rape has been mentioned in a MGS game and Chip will probably say that they've taken it a lot further this time. They'll both talk in an purposefully drawn-out ellipsis style, throughout. Also, there will be a very drawn-out trigger warning at the beginning with Chip reiterating it vocally immediately before he plays the audio.

All of this, with possibly a quick and subtle sarcastic "video games are art!" comment from ironicus, followed by he and chip chuckling and going "yeah..." before mercifully not continuing the point.
