Let's Sperg Let's plays awful, and or mediocre games. - There a ton of them out there. (Starting with Virus: It's aware)

You know now that I think of it, this game makes a good second game for this thread. After all, at the end of Virus: It's aware.

The Evil's Dead.

Also I have now beat the game, and I can say with out a doubt. It's pretty god damn short of a game, you can feel that towards the very end they was rushing to finish this game. When ever I got some extra time to record, I'll start recording.

Question: Are any of the the Duke games between 3D and Forever (Time to Kill, Zero Hour, Land of the Babes and Manhattan Project) you think would qualify for this thread?

Not too familiar with Duke Nukem games when it comes to playing them. I hear they suck, but If I need a game later down the line I keep in mind to check them out.

Evil Dead: Hail To the King, Opening Post

Before I start this let's play off fully. I want to do a opening post like I did for Virus. I might do one of these for any game I cover.

As I hinted at, and I know a few of you guys have figured out becasue I throw softer balls, then the pay actors they get to ask questions to the president, the next game is

Evil Dead.jpg

It came out for Dreamcast, Ps1, and PC.

You might see the PS1, and think I am doing that port. Oh no no no, I have found something a bit special when searching around for games to play.

Zombs Lair

So Zombs Lair has a installer that not only sets you up with the game, but has a preset up PCem to go with it so you don't have to worry about capability trouble shooting a old PC game that likely wont work do to how OS changed over time. I might use this preset up PCem to play other old computer games if I figure out how to get it to install other games.

Anyway, Hail to the king is a sequel to Army of Darkness. The studio who worked on the game, Heavy Iron Studios which you guys might recognize from this list of other games they made, and I stole off wikipedia.

Screenshot_1.png

Yeah I am seeing a trend of doing a certain type of game. At least they got better at making games after this one.

They also had a hand in co developing stuff.

Screenshot_2.png

Look at this Call of duty, South park, H1Z1

and hold on at the bottom those two games.

Screenshot_3.png

How the hell do you go from.

To

That impressive how even the games they help co developed end up as being really good or really shit.

What if I told ya they even had a cancelled Saints Row spinoff.

Screenshot_4.png

These guys really get around don't they.

Anyway more about the game at hand.

I think the best way to describe Hail to the king is. What if RE4 5 years early, but far more janky combat wise, never ditched tank controls, and if it had enemies that re spawned, and had a button solely dedicated to make you sound like a crazy person asking the air to "Come get some." when ever you wanted.

Here the Title screen movie that plays when you start the game up.

I am sorry about the video having that staticy poppy sound to it, I have no idea why PCem does that. I'll look into it a bit for the first update, and see if I can fix it on my end.

And of course, you can't start a Let's play of a Evil dead game with out making sure the opening post has this line.

Impressive how this companys gaming record is a 50/50 hit or miss
Yeah, the they have made some real gems that people do love to this day. Like Night of 100 frights, Incredibles( My personal favoite game by HIS ), BfBB.

Also Heads up, I do tend to put up a video for any given update a few hours to a day or two before I ever make a update. Encase anyone watches those things. :story:

Anyway I'm going to slowly chip away at making the screenshots now. Part 1 ended up being split into 2 videos because fuck adding a phone number to this youtube account.

Also the game knows us too well.

Interesting choice for the next game. I remember seeing this game on some youtube shills horror PS1 games "hidden gem" video years ago but I never played it myself. I'm curious if it going to be complete garbage or actually something fun.
I would't call it a hidden gem. More of a acquired taste. The story is fine, and very evil dead-y, hell believe it or not this game is a sequel to army of darkness, and this game also has a sequel made by a different studio that I would call okay to goodish.

The combat, and the later half of the game is where it shits the bed in terms of being bad game wise. Let me tell you the combat is a big part of this game, image this. You want to get from point A to B, but as you walk there you have to deal with re spawning enemies who can show up right in front of you, gang up on you while you fight, block your fucking path. You have to do this while fighting the hit detection sometimes saying you being up a enemies ass isn't good enough, but then they swipe and hit at you from a fucking mile away(I've done this to a enemy once before as well).

You might be like. "Oh just run away from the enemies stupid". Problem with that, it's not only tank control in a god damn action horror game, but if I had a fucking nickle for every time I got stuck on a enemy or the absurd hitbox of the walls I could buy a real copy of this game. The boss fights are a joke as well.

They range from stupid easy, to 1 retardedly bad designed one. That is literally just a test to see if you farmed/stocked up enough on HP items so you can face tank it's damage and sit up it's ass to deal damage with it.

There also a few puzzle bosses, but I don't hate them much.

The bad parts will keep most players away from this game, and leaves it as a mediocre relic that you can show you the evolution of survivor horror into action horror.

Just a small spoiler while I keep working on this. But I felt like showing you guys some of the bullshit with the respawning enemies early.

You might think. "Oh the enemy teleported in front of me. " No The guy who spawned in front of me is a different guy then the one who went down.

Yeah enemies being able to spawn in your path like this is bad design. :story:

Evil Dead: Hail To the King Part 1: I'm starting with the man in the mirror!

I'll post the cut scenes in the update as mini videos encase people doesn't want to watch the whole video(s) just for them.
But I will rag on some of these with screenshots.

(Yes the opening really does cut off that abruptly)

Screenshot_4.png

For example look at fucking ash's face. You could make all the current year political jabs with a face like that.

Screenshot_5.png

Ash's hand is looking no worse for wear after 8 FUCKING YEARS. Look I know being possessed by a deadite does wonders for the skin, but you think it look a bit more rotten and not just discolored.

Screenshot_6.png

Another shot to look at ash's weird 2000's CGI face.

Screenshot_7.png

You know, you think ash would destroy that recorder if he was going to come back here.
But then again ash isn't the brightest bulb now is he.

Screenshot_8.png

JESUS FUCKING CHRIST HIS MISSING HAND. I know he got the metal replacement one in army of darkness, but that clearly not it.

His hand looks like he borrowed it from the plant zombies from the dreamcast game Carrier. Which is another game I plan to cover one of these days, and also came out in 2000.

Screenshot_11.png

:story:

Screenshot_13.png

Screenshot_14.png

Screenshot_15.png

Forgive me for referencing this but.

Screenshot_16.png

Evil ash is back. You might question how the hell is he back after dying in army of darkness.

Never explained, or need to be. Hell this isn't even the last time evil ash came back in a spinoff.

There is two separate comic book evil ashes. The first one https://evildead.fandom.com/wiki/Evil_Ash_(Earth-818793)
Turned into a tree after dying to the explosion in army of darkness, then later got resurrected when ash's possessed hand bounded with a skeleton in a tomb. I am just going to stop there, because it gets more wacky from there IMO. (at one point also involving a mirror.)

The other one
Came from his metal hand getting possessed on a space station and then touching the Necronomicon.

So a evil ash just popping out a mirror like this, giving ash a good old throw, is just fine.

WorkShed.gif

Screenshot_17.png

Screenshot_18.png

Screenshot_19.png

Screenshot_20.png

Then we get the equivalent of the devs jangling keys in your face going. "MEMBER EVIL DEAD 2?"

But you know what. I am a fool in love for this type of key jangling. Let me tell you, this game has quite a few of these thrown about the game.

:feels:

Screenshot_22.png

When we get control, it sends us right into the file inventory to read knowby's notes. Despite it only being one page.

Screenshot_23.png

Screenshot_24.png

I am not even going to try to wrap my head around the timeline of events this messes up.

Screenshot_25.png

here our item inventory . Very RE like. At the top is our chainsaw, under it is our gas meter. According to a game faq guide I saw. A full bar on the starter chainsaw lasts 30 seconds of just having it active. I'll explain more on that when we get into combat.

Screenshot_27.png

Good old trusty pistol that does shit damage, but is most likely better then getting into melee range.

Screenshot_28.png

All this means is we can't use this yet. But I will explain this now. We will later find two special files. Each one let's us turn a certain kind of mushroom into HP kit, or Gas for our chainsaw.

Screenshot_29.png

Anyway let's go look around the cabin first.

Deadite.gif

Yeah after your first few steps away from the recorder we meet our first enemy.

Oh yeah the Dream Cast version has a Manuel with some of the enemies from first half of the game. I'll sprinkle these in when needed. There wont be many.

Deadite.png

BUT GOD DAMN DO THEY LOOK SO FUCKING COOL.

You get slight idea of how gun combat works. You stay away from the enemy and pew pew.

Thankfully the cabin is one of the areas in this game where deadites don't respawn after killing them .

Screenshot_30.png

And it dropped us a Small HP kit. What do you think could be inside the tiny pill bottle to patch up being clawed a million times by deadites? Can't be pain pills, we pop this like candy.

Hmm, head canon time.

Ash runs on Mentos.

Screenshot_31.png

The cabin has only 2 deadite spawns.

Screenshot_32.png

The other is by our bed.

Screenshot_33.png

As the note said, our first over arching objective is to find the missing pages. Five of them are scattered about the first half of the game. 3 guarded by bosses.

Screenshot_34.png

Screenshot_36.png

In the bathroom in this cabin.

Screenshot_37.png

You find a few items like this. They are small HP kits by another name, and they don't stack.

So I tend to use them first to clean up space.

Screenshot_38.png

In the fridge.

Screenshot_39.png

Mind you none of these bootleg small HP kits shine so you have to find these by luck of spamming use on everything.

The kitchen has a second item, but I forget to pick it up every time I play this game.

Let's leave the cabin now.

Screenshot_40.png

There is a door to go to the back, but for the sake of showing what a person new to this game would do. I go out the front and go around the side.

Screenshot_41.png

There two items back here to pick up.

Screenshot_42.png

Screenshot_43.png

According to guides this fills 1/3 of the fuel tank. (10 seconds)

While the large ones are 2/3.

Screenshot_44.png

God I hate these fucks out here. Outside the cabin is where these guys will nonstop respawn on you. And the side roads are also like this.

Most of the time if you have to melee, you press the button to turn on the chainsaw, and use it to attack. It does like twice the damage of the axe.
It doesn't matter how many times you swing it, the fuel only goes down based on how long it turned on.

Speedrunners abuse this by quickly switching it on and off nonstop so it never runs out of fuel.

Ammo drop.gif

After killing these fucks I get ammo drop for the pistol.

You can start to see why I really despise respawning enemies, and how cheap they can be when they spawn in front of you when you just trying to walk by.

This next part I am ashamed of.

The game was literally not letting me pick up the shovel at first. I even went to go pick up the mushroom just to make sure I wasn't going mad, and hitting the wrong button.

Screenshot_46.png

Yeah sure what ever.

Screenshot_50.png

Once we grab the shovel linda's headless corpses pulls a altered beast on us.

There is no sound effect for this, but in my heart I hear.

Screenshot_51.png

I make a big mistake and try to gun down linda's corpse which is just a reskinned and slower skeleton.
For what ever reason skeletons take less gun damage it feels.

And during this fight. Linda does something I have never seen her do.

You okay linda.gif

I swear guys this game isn't normally this buggy. First time I seen a bug like this. Fuck! Did the virus game curse this thread so anytime I record a game it gets extra buggy?

Screenshot_53.png

It took so long even a god damn deadite got sick of waiting for me to kill her, and joined in the fight. Thankfully by the time it reached me linda was dead.

Oh and I didn't have to fight linda, you don't have to fight 80% of the enemies in this game. I just did it for the sake of this LP>

Screenshot_55.png

Mentos the fungus maker.

Screenshot_56.png

Let's head to the place I have to go now.

Screenshot_57.png

I am going to try to skip showing most of these inbetween roads as they just enclosed areas full of respawning deadites.

But this road gives me a good chance to.

LET'S GO, YO, COME GET SOME. LET'S GO, YO, COME GET SOME. LET'S GO, YO, COME GET SOME.
LET'S GO, YO, COME GET SOME. LET'S GO, YO, COME GET SOME. LET'S GO, YO, COME GET SOME.

This is what we needed a one liner button.

Screenshot_58.png

Anyway after like 4 screens we get to the Hillbilly house.

Screenshot_61.png

Screenshot_62.png

Mandatory item for later this update.

Screenshot_64.png

I just love the locations in the first half of this game. I'll sing praises for how nice these backdrops look.

Screenshot_66.png

We just have to find a way into this house. The only door is shut.

Hellbilly.png

Sadly only the middle guy is used from this picture. There are like 2 other models in game. But they not fat female, and banjo baldie there.

Here the real point of the one liner button. When a enemy gets low on HP there a chance they go into dazed state. Chain sawing them from the front will cause you to do a finisher.
Using your side weapon, and a one liner has a chance to make them drop a large HP kit. I say a chance, because there many times they wont drop anything anyway.

You also get to hear a line other then LET'S GO, YO, COME GET SOME.

Screenshot_67.png

Here a better look at him.

Screenshot_68.png

Let's head to the maze so we can get a item to open that door.

Random sometimes when the game decides to do the whole JOIN US voice line. You tend to ignore it as it's just flavor thing.

That there was a skeleton.

skeleton.png

They also respawn, but there a weird trick to them. By spamming the one liner button, you can sometimes cause them not to spawn, or if they do sometimes the AI will bug out. This is a bug I can confirm. it wont work 100% of the time, but it does help when maze is literally just hallways that they can get you stuck in.

For your extended LET'S GO, YO, COME GET SOME. Needs.

Screenshot_73.png

The lawn mower has a draw cord this will let us open the door.

Screenshot_74.png

Sometimes you can get a one liner you heard before, followed by a new one.

Screenshot_74.png

I hate when they trap you like this.

You okay skeleton.gif

If you look closely the skeleton has minor bug out for a frame. Again weird shit I have not seen before, or noticed till relooking at the recording.

Sometimes this song is a real mood when playing these old games.

Screenshot_75.png

I skipped this moving by last time but right here.

Screenshot_76.png

It's hidden item version of red mushroom. Unlike food ones you have to craft this into gas to get rid of it.

And unlike the food ones, this one does shine.

Screenshot_77.png

Over to the side of the house which I passed on showing before.

Screenshot_78.png

Open the door.gif

I have no idea why the deadties open the door when we start the generator. Maybe they just hate the idea of solving puzzles.

Screenshot_79.png

This hits me from this range.

Screenshot_80.png

I wont show off any more finishers unless it's a new line, even then I could forget.

But make sure you stock up on Large HP kits the best you can.

Screenshot_81.png

With the door open deadites spawn here. I don't know if this guy respawns as I ignore him and run.

Screenshot_82.png

The hellbillies also dropped a save item outside the door when they opened it. I'll pick it up when we leave.

Screenshot_83.png

Just getting inside we randomly find our boomstick. :woo:

Sadly we don't have ammo for it yet. You can find some scattered in the over world, and enemies can have a chance to drop some now.
There also a note on the table.

Screenshot_84.png

It says pages, but we only get one from here.

Screenshot_85.png

Screenshot_86.png

This blue light a hint. You can stand on this table in the corner.

Screenshot_87.png

Screenshot_88.png

Passport not included with our crowbar.

She seems trust worthy. Not at all evil. Let's help her out.

Screenshot_89.png

Screenshot_90.png

Like the boomstick we just kind of find this. The game can be nice sometimes.

Screenshot_91.png

Screenshot_92.png

We can now make small gas cans.

Screenshot_93.png

We just have to use the converter or the item with each other.

Screenshot_94.png

Ta da. AS soon as we exit the menu.

Ambush.gif

Did you catch that.

Screenshot_95.png

For one frame, the deadite on our left is underground T posing.

Screenshot_96.png

And this is the key granny gave us.

Screenshot_97.png

Turns out the hellbillies are into soylent green.

Screenshot_98.png

Somewhere around that table is another hidden food item. I didn't pick it up again, this time because when I record I do this while I am super tired.
Just like right now as I throw together this update.

Screenshot_99.png

Just a random audio cue sound. These like the JOIN US line. Happen at random, and get annyoing after a while. You can also hear a pig oink. :feels:
pig.gif

here one of the pigs. There are 4 total in this game. They push overs you can gun down.

2 in this room.

Screenshot_100.png

We came here for that big shiny object.

Screenshot_101.png

Screenshot_102.png

With this and the crank, we can use them on this to drain the blood.

Screenshot_103.png

This is what it says if we explain it before putting parts on it.

Why was that a cut scene?

Screenshot_104.png

Anyway with the blood magically drained in seconds.

Screenshot_105.png

God fucking damn it the third pig spawned right next to the ladder in here.

Screenshot_106.png

We get a good look at the pig model down here.

Screenshot_107.png

There the amulet on the right.

Screenshot_108.png

On the way back to granny I noticed a weird bug that lasted for one frame.
Screenshot_109.png

I put a red outline around it like a clickbait youtuber because this might be hard to noticed otherwise.

Screenshot_110.png

This is one frame later. Not sure if this is a bug in the game, or a PCem related bug.

Screenshot_111.png

We also find the last of the 4 pigs in the room now.

Screenshot_112.png

Another good shot of the front of the model this time.

Screenshot_113.png

It's time to go save poor 100% not evil deadite granny.

Screenshot_114.png

Oh look she is a EVIL DEADITE. Who could have seen this twist coming?

She is also a spider.

Screenshot_115.png

Funny thing is, I didn't intend to use the speedrun strat that gets her stuck. It happen by pure accident. Otherwise she just walks from one side of the room to the other, and you have to stay up her ass to do damage.

Also as long you hit her before she hits you, she does no damage to you. That first hit she did get was a cheap shot.

I just like to also spin after beating bosses. Just how I am.

Screenshot_116.png

Screenshot_117.png

Why the fuck did she have this?
I'll look at the necronomicon page next update.

On my way out of the house this happened.

Fucking cheap shot bullshit.

Screenshot_118.png

On my way to go save and quit I decided to nab that large gas can in the corner and got trapped by these two stooges, the darker the red the stronger the deadite btw.

Screenshot_119.png

Thank god they go away sometimes. But this did happen.

You can tell the moment, when I broke out of my sleepy daze and stopped myself from chasing after the two as they hump the corner. :story:
Screenshot_120.png

Back here we can enter the old shed.

Screenshot_122.png

Find this super Resident evil looking item box.

Screenshot_123.png

We can put items in it , and use our save items to save the game here.

That's it for this update. Next update should be shorter and be quicker to put out.
If you guys have any questions about what you just read, the game, or spotted any weird errors caused by my lack of sleep do ask/point it out and feel free to laugh at me for the latter.

This seems like such a weird game, doesn't help that I know virtually nothing about the Evil Dead movies.
It feels like it made by fans of the movies hence key jangling references to the original trilogy; They love shoving in more then I love referencing unrelated stuff. But that love is counter pointed by the awful design. You are pretty much getting the short stick on this LP. :story:

You can also feel like this is the first game they made, or got rushed (You really feel this towards the second half of the game) hence some of the real awful design decisions.

If a person was into bad games and evildead, I think this game is still worth a try just to see if you can stomach the awful combat.

Evil dead 2 and 3(Army of Darkness) are still worth a watch if you want a great movie that blends horror and comedy.

It's sorta easy to see what the devs were thinking with shit like enemies popping out as soon as you pick up an item. Maybe if given enough time they could have animated their entry instead of having them teleport through time and space.

Unfortunately they made a game where the best way of playing it is to pretend you're fuckin' Jerry Rice and just run past everything trying to get you.

The thing is, the enemies will pop up no matter what you do, aside from like linda who are tied to grabbing shovel, or abusing the one liner spam bug on skeletons in the maze.

The game also remembers where the enemy's last location in a location was. Hence the deadite waiting outside the hillbilly house door to get a cheap shot on you.

Are any of the the Duke games between 3D and Forever (Time to Kill, Zero Hour, Land of the Babes and Manhattan Project) you think would qualify for this thread?
Manhattan Project was, in my opinion, quite good as a return to Duke's roots as a platform game. I'd say I had more fun playing Manhattan Project than the officially released Forever.

I kind of hope the game stops randomly bugging out. :story: One of the lesser reasons I picked this game was it was not buggy, and here I am update 1 questioning why linda was suddenly a playing tf2 casual as a Hacking sniper bot.

Don't worry, I'll point out the key jangling references I do get as the LP goes on.
