"Yes, while this was not a cost saving measure, it was a mistake, one that we will rectify."
Hello there!

Yes, our VOD audio bitrate has been problematically low for a while now, I apologize for that.

“Funnily enough, this wasn't always the case. While downloading videos, I also tried some older ones and videos from 2017/2018 actually have 320 kb/s audio (mediainfo). Did they really have to save that fraction of a cent in bandwidth cost per view? If I had to guess they probably switched to some variable bitrate mode (the audio bitrate is not exactly 96 kb/s across all videos), but chose a way too aggressive one targeting low bitrates. “
Yes, and this came to our attention roughly 4 months ago. We, at this time, think that this is a combination of 2 things. First, we think our audio transcoding settings were copied from our target for 360p video to all targets by accident sometime in the past when the transcoding stack was completely rewritten from scratch and this change wasn’t noticed. Secondly, due to playback issues, a sizable amount (not all) of our backlog was re-transcoded, so the exact point in time that this happened isn’t immediately obvious.

“The audio I find especially disappointing. Both Linus and Luke have said multiple times how it costs barely any extra bandwidth to transmit high quality audio. “
Yes, while this was not a cost saving measure, it was a mistake, one that we will rectify.

The reason this wasn’t actioned immediately is because I’ve had the person who owns the transcoding stack very focused on fixing transcoding errors that have led 4k transcodes to fall back to being processed by a single transcoding node instead of the parallelized process we usually leverage, which allows us to split a video into 50+ chunks and transcode them individually. This has been disruptive for both our infra/development teams as they have had to manually fix things often and also for creators as it has resulted in VERY slow uploads.

In our pre-production environment, we have already updated the audio transcoding settings to use VBR 5, instead of the current VBR 3 target. This is still not as good as it was in the past… But this is a temporary measure to increase quality with a full solution coming in the future. Streams are a completely different pipeline and are unaffected at this time.

We have a status page (status.floatplane.com) that helps communicate service uptime to users. Our plan moving forward is to make every effort to note major issues regardless of them not being service uptime related. I updated it to reflect the current audio issue status and will keep you all posted there.

Now from a video standpoint, I'm happy our video quality is still doing well compared to the same resolutions on YouTube. Both FP and YT have evolved in many ways since that time. The FP 1080p being better than the YT 4k thing is a very old and definitely outdated claim, we do have plans to improve quality here and will be making many changes, as we have in the past, to optimize for visual quality, bandwidth, and device compatibility. AJ - the FP Infrastructure Lead - will speak about this in his reply as well.

What I like most about this shit show is that normalfags jumped on it hard, I don't think Linus expected it from anyone besides the type of people who actually like Gamersnexus overly autistic charts and in-depth tech stuff.

LTT has always come across as computer and tech shilling for normalfags who fill their (often prebuilt or close enough too it) case with RGB fans and put a funko-pop in it and copy whatever popular thing from reddit at the time.

These sort of people don't really understand what LTT was doing was wrong but they FEEL it was wrong so thats enough to fuck LTT over super hard. Then there is the Madison shit and well yea that is bound to get the redditor normalfags angrier than unethical exploitative shit that really is the bigger issue.

It helps that the more egregious aspects of the drama are very digestible, such as the Billet Labs fiasco. "They botched the review and then auctioned off the prototype for no reason" is both obviously unethical and easy to grasp. Even some of the tech stuff is simple enough for anyone to comprehend, like getting basic product specs wrong.

Old but gold featuring Linus! This is one of the funniest democrat adds I have ever seen as it just one big passive aggressive stereotype as its compilation of liberal shills and niggers telling you to vote democrat without explictly telling you to do so.
First 30 seconds are two soyboys soying out about electric cars and renewable energy and muh soyence. Then a nog appears and goes MUH BASKETBALL n Lakers Shieeeet! A bit later Jerryrigmywife shows up and says: "Im gonna pick the guy who has a history of believing in science" :suffering:
LTT/LMG has rules in place regarding their employees streaming and other avenues of social media monetization. I think even Luke had to jump through hoops before he was allowed to monetize his twitch channel. If I remember right Linus made him stream X number of days a week every week for quite a while with zero monetization to prove that he was just streaming for fun before he let him turn monetization features on. As they've become more and more bureaucratic it wouldn't surprise me if their non-compete or something similar prevents them from streaming or doing normal youtube content for as long as they're legally able to block them
I like Luke but goddamn, I don't know a guy that's dropped the ball harder when it comes to life. He was there first and got nothing to show for it and instead the only thing I see is a long string of failures that get more embarrassing as Linus descends in to lolcowdom. If you watch the WAN show you will see that in every major controversy Luke has been on point with his reactions trying to shut him up. Every single time you can see it written on his face what he actually thinks and feels. Yet he cannot take a hard stance against Linus cause at the end of the day Linus is the one cutting the checks and the one with a massive ego.

Is Luke the only one of Linus' friends from school that still want anything to do with him? I can't think of any other reason why Luke would have stuck around as long as he has, and I don't think Head of Tard Wrangling at LMG is the sort of job anyone would willingly do for just a paycheck alone.

Imagine being so afraid of your employee's ability to be more successful than you in grifting, you force them to sign a "non-compete" agreement that makes you can't stream for certain hours on twitch.
Linus started with being the YouTube guy for NCIX and used that to start LMG.

I would expect he's paranoid that "him giving his employees exposure" might lead to them doing the same, leave and start their own business. Linus who sees his company as an "empire" can't have this.

and walked away.
Why does anyone think the 100m deal was a walk away? They likely wanted to buy the company and have linus dance to their corporate tune.

Why the fuck would you buy "LinusCo" and cut Linus loose? The one unambiguous win the idiot with the dropsies did was name the company after himself.
For good, or more obviously BAD, the company and it's image are tied to his spastic ass.

Hard disagree Luke's got nothing to show for it. Even if LMG implodes or Luke leaves of his own volition, I think he's built a pretty damn impressive resume. He started there as cameraman with no experience - I think Linus was impressed with his mineral oil cooled PC and gave him a chance.

He has been instrumental in building a very successful Youtube channel, before moving over to manage a team of programmers to build a subscription video platform. More recently he's moved back over to LMG to fix up the technical mess that's developed in his absence.

Even being associated with Linus, I don't think he'd find it hard to get a new job or start his own venture. I think he'd have a pretty extensive network in the tech industry that are clued in to the fact he's not responsible for the mess that LMG has become, and in fact been brought in to try and fix things up on the technical side.

So now turns out LMG doesn't comply with EU taxes? There's so much stuff piling up i would almost feel bad for Linus if he wasn't such an insufferable canadian. What's next? Overworking your employees? Madison technically mentioned it already, but she's a zoomie who was whining about having to make 2 tiktoks a day. But there's that Dan guy, who from what i've seen is one of the few actually competent guys there. I've seen him host videos, help and fix stuff both in the company and linus' house, maintain server, do reviews and he also hosts wan-show every week, and there may be more since i don't follow LTT that closely. With 100+ employees you'd except these tasks to be done by different people.

Also seems LMG might be doing some not-conplying-with-EU
-VAT-Regulations-Shenanigans according to the op.

From a comment
Now this is juicy.
>it was a mistake! tee hee!
Sure Luke, suuure.

Hoping that this is not the only mistake in that house of cards- which is likely considering they once killed their servers and lost all data.

It's completely unacceptable period, doesn't matter if this is a woman or a man.
The thing that boggles me is how much thought was put into the "How much risk am I exposing myself to be sued into oblivion for doing this?" (there wasn't). Porn companies have a shit ton of requirements so they don't get obliterated by a in a trial, Linus just goes lol no hire some BPD bitch to handle this thing closely reated to the adult industry it's fine fam.

Linus could've just made the account as a joke, and just managed it himself by never using it again.

As of 15 hours ago, Tim is still alive lol
This is his twitter account: https://twitter.com/TimHolowachuk

He has issued an apology on the situation. (archive)
I don't know if it was posted yet, but it's a nothingburger formal apology and genuinely the guy seems boring.
He has a meme page on his personal website and that's about it. (archive)

Coreteks is a gay nigger who is unable to recognize his shit sponsor deals are because he's not good at anything. His complaints about GN would be a million times more relevant if he didn't make content a million times worse than GN. Someone here brought up a great point that just because GN shows numbers, doesn't mean he can't make some deltas seem more valuable than they should be. And that's totally something to watch out for. But, once again, Coreteks is a gay nigger who can't succeed at what he spends all of his time doing.

To those saying GN should just cut off any sponsor deals for products he reviews, I ask you how he is supposed to buy test devices and hire staff then? Fucking redditors infiltrating the site trying to whore over drama and racing to deepthroat the biggest log of bullshit. He can take sponsorships and review shit products from those same sponsors because he's already done that repeatedly with fair results. The "wholly independent reviewer" schtick might be played up for credibility, but at the end of the day the legitimate criticism is overwhelmed by the "I've never really worked" mindset of absolute faggots.

Really just look at how GN does sponsorship.

1-only ever products they personally use or previously reviewed positively and only after the original review went live

2-they never mix products. I.E. a case is never the sponsor during a case review and they never do a sponsor for the same brand they’re reviewing in the video

3-most are not hardware. The majority of their sponsorships are thermal paste or Squarespace. There are instances of coolers and cases, but they’re the least common in the mix

4-More and more frequent self sponsorship in videos. Over the last year and a half or so they’ve been increasingly saying they are the sponsor thanks to sales from shirts, tool kits, coasters, and mod mats. And unlike Linus they didn’t make the merch store a meme, they also never shill both the merch store and a sponsor at the same time.

5-they have regularly attacked companies that have sponsored them both before and after said sponsorships, Asus being a major one

GN does have the same potential for a conflict of interest as anyone, but it’s not as blatant as Linus, and they’re not running conventions sponsored by the companies they’re allegedly reviewing, nor do they sell co-branded merch with companies they’re supposed to be critical of.
