Veterans have access to the GI Bill to help pay for an education, VA healthcare, and can also get VA loans to help buy a home. Now a VA loan is honestly not tons different than a conventional loan, so you're not given a house. And there are programs to help veterans find work

it's a sad reality that Lucas isn't alone in his idiocy of "the rich are taxed less than the poor". in the US you generally pay more in income taxes by both percentile and by raw amount of dollars than anyone of less income. the key word being "income" tax rather than say, capital gains or excise taxes of varying kinds. generational wealth, if tied to assets, are not taxed regularly or even the same way until they are sold - the wealthy tend to own more assets that are either intrinsically valuable or desirable to other wealthy people. this portable wealth tied to an asset is sometimes why you have multi-million dollar art pieces, it's a way to pass down and retain wealth that isn't easily prone to losing value in the same way a more liquid or volatile asset is. poorer people enjoy fewer assets and are more cash oriented than asset oriented, et c.

"doesn't happen that way in Europe" - where in Europe? they do not give out infinite money to people who refuse to work, they have a more generous welfare state for the most part (varies country to country), but that is paid by significantly higher taxes on everything or by nationalized assets that are marketed external to the country (state-owned assets that are sold internationally, sovereign wealth funds, et c). even the most socialist European countries still assess (often pretty high) taxes to pay for public services. Switzerland is i think the only exception to the rule where the US has a lower tax rate than Europe for public benefit contributions. most European countries hover between 40-50% tax rates, the US is 37%, and Switzerland is 34%. some of these countries do not have income-based benefit distributions, instead benefits are distributed based on need and qualification, just like the US. the US is less generous on benefits as the qualifications aren't as easy to meet typically and vary by state as each state can administrate programs in addition to national ones. this is all on top of things generally being more expensive in Europe, as well as the US having a ridiculously oversized defense budget (the US budget is larger than the next top ten military budgets in the world added together) that is "shared" with Europe - allowing most European countries to maintain very small militaries. if the US cut defense spending in half, $430+ billion being spent on public benefits would be pretty massive if managed well.

VA benefits are largely to reintegrate and normalize civvie life for veterans as well as provide opportunities they missed out on during their service, like higher education access or job history for stable credit scores to get housing loans that aren't trash. that says nothing about things like permanent injuries or disabilities connected to service, and the VA assessment system is ass, has always been ass, and will continue to be ass without some serious reform. you can't even get dental unless you're 100% disabled.

my buddy is 100% VA disabled, took 10 years to get that approved, and had to suffer for years in poverty, constant pain that was dulled with drugs and alcohol, constant nightmares, permanent injuries, et c. he worked whatever jobs he could get in the short term and was denied so often it took lawsuits to finally get him in a good place.

if Lucas wants the bennies he better be willing to torture himself for a couple decades in public service. if he does that i have no beef with him getting lifetime VA bennies.
