The self medication via food, alcohol, and weed, is interesting to watch in real time. Lucas doesn’t have much in his life to feel good about, he has no meaningful relationships with family or friends, his romantic aspirations are worthy of Don Quixote, and he effectively has no hobbies or interests that gives life its color. In most instances these are obvious signs of depression, but I think Lucus doesn’t experience depression as it is commonly understood. I see his consumption simply being the result of a shallow interior-life due to a malignant personality disorder. His entire being is oriented towards satisfying desires and because the abundant population of nubile communist-Christians of Spokane are so hesitant to let him spray his DNA inside them, he simply overcompensates with what is available.
Most people his age would feel stupid and/or pathetic recording themselves eating food, delivering a wandering monologue, then uploading it to social media. Lucas doesn’t feel that shame because he is having a meal with his favorite person: himself. He talks about feeling lonely sometimes, but I don’t buy it. Just like his not-so-subtle hints at suicide, any talk about lonliness is just a stupid attempt at manipulation. The fact these attempts only seem to attract younger men with uncertain agendas is one of those small miracles the Universe sometimes grants us here at the Farms.
Lucas will be getting catfished for the rest of his life. Even if he got himself civilly committed or earned his ticket to prison, he’d still be getting communications from dudes wanting to fuck with him. He will fall for it over and over again because his narcissism cements into place the expectation that he is desirable. Lucas truly feels that he is desirable to young women and that the only obstacle to consummating a marriage to a child-bride are the mores of American capitalism.
His behaviour with the food honestly perplexes me. I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone eat the way he does with those mannerism or with that awful fucking palate his has cultivated. The nearest thing that I could think of that is similar are adults who didn’t practice fine motor skills as children. So you take a woman who grew up in rural Cambodia and never used a writing utensil until the age of 30 and observe how she holds a pencil or tries to manipulate it and it will appear strange and unnatural.
Maybe the food mannerisms and his grotesque taste are linked to his childhood and how his mother used food as a distraction and coping mechanism? That could be reading too much into it, it could also be a performance Lucas does because he thinks it makes him appear sophisticated or some kind of non-verbal cue that demonstrates he knows “fine dining”.
