Lucas, most men aren't threatened when women call them "dude" or "buddy", because most men see women as humans that they can have meaningful friendships with. If you read his contribution to the "It gets better" project, back around page 30 of the thread, (it's supposed to be a brief note telling suicidal kids to hold on, but in typical egomaniac Lucas fashion, he spends about 50 pages whining about how hard his life is, and about 10 complaining about one "Cyril", whom Lucas had fashioned into his bete-noir- du-jour at the time) you get some insights into how he relates to his mother; it's pretty sad. He suggests she has no faith in his attempt at college, at least then, which she was probably right about, but also acts like she can't understand his problems, which when you read her sad post about mothering Lucas, is clearly untrue. In short, he doesn't give her enough credit, but also manages to blame her unduly.
