Remind me why Cyndi isn't in the WWE Hall of Fame?

If she hadn't hit it off with Captain Lou, wrestling would have fallen into irrelevancy a lot sooner.
Two reasons:

1. Lauper had a major panic attack around the time "Time After Time" came out about her career prospects going forward as far as it being the song that made critics think Lauper had potential as a serious singer. She began fearing that her affiliation with the WWE was going to cause her to be seen as a one-hit wonder type.

2. Lauper was legit close friends with wrestler Wendi Ricter and Richter got fucked over HARD by the WWE and Lauper took Ricter's side and stopped associating with the WWE.

It's also why True Colors had such a bizarro marketing strategy. She only did two "proper" videos to promote the album (True Colors and Change of Heart) and the rest were taking from a live concert video (and Change of Heart was filmed as a live street performance around the time she filmed said concert video in Paris). Cindy desperately wanted to distance herself from She's So Unusual, which is also why True Colors got the biggest promotional push of her singles and why Lauper largely abandoned the mainstream.

Only a couple of years ago, did the WWE start rebuilding bridges with Ricter and they managed to get Lauper involved; on the anniversary of the first WM IIRC, they got the two together along with Roddy Piper on one of their "Legends Nights" and did a bit where Piper formally buried the hatchet with Ricter and Lauper over their storyline feud.

Prince's war with his label and his decision to wholesale reject the mainstream afterwards pretty much decimated his fanbase down to the most hardcore of hardcore fans. Prince stopped being relevant after Diamonds and Pearls (though if you want to be generous, you could argue Gold Experience though by that point even MTV stopped playing his music). And Prince knew it and it was a massive fucking issue because a lot of fans wanted the older raunchier Prince and had no time for born again Christian Prince who became the embodiment of the longtime act who only plays new stuff in concert and you're lucky if you get a classic hit during the encore. And the Crystal Ball debacle did him no favors either in terms of pissing off even his die-hards.

Same thing in a way happened to Cindy Lauper: she had two albums people care about (three if you want to be generous and charitable relating "Hole In My Heart" and "I Drove All Night") and while she's still around, her live performances are an inane attempt to get her fans to accept her new stuff while still trotting out her old stuff her fans want to hear.

Ironically both Madonna and Jackson managed to avoid this trap
MJ fucked himself hard with the release of Invincible.

I've long been the believer that Invincible flopped so that Justin Timberlake could rise like the phoenix from the ashes of N'Sync and become a respectable solo act you could like without embarrassment. What with the fact that Justin's solo debut was full of material that MJ turned his nose up at recording and was ultimately gifted to JT when he started looking for collaborators for his solo debut.

People say she was the female MJ.

Gaga's Fame Monster, Miley's Bangerz, and Beyonce's self-titled and Lemonade; none of them can touch Madonna in her prime. ofc she didn't have much competition. Madonna practically ruled MTV for fifteen years.

The field is much wider today. It would be like comparing Ric Flair to the wrestlers of now.

Madonna looks like if Marilyn Monroe had a shellfish allergy.

That said, she was my first celebrity crush. Back then, she rarely failed a charisma check. (I don't normally go for that high Germanic look.)
She was never anything special, not a great singer, no particular talent--she was just the first one willing to go totally all-in on being a proud public "Look at me I'm a slut. " If she were to come along today, she would make no impact whatever.

Exactly — Madonna was a whore and that was the whole schtick, from “Like a Virgin” on down. Her career is one only a Boomer Catholic could have had - her job in the ‘80s was to shock people like 15 years older than her.

Madonna made Jimmy Fallon rethink his life (and possible late night career)

Madonna didn't quite fall in the 90s but her Sex period pretty much damaged her career mightily and rendered her a punchline to a lot of people. "Bedtime Stories" was an attempt at a comeback but "Take A Bow" and "Evita" was Madonna trying to course correct and reformat her public person as having "grown up" and being "more mature". Getting pregnant/having a kid and finding Kabalahism was part of that rebranding an Ray of Light and Music was Madonna doing what she did years later with Confessions on the Dance Floor: put out timeless dance music with an affirmative message to show she still has it.

But Madonna's fall came when she didn't have MTV to prop her up and promote her work/status as a major figure. She got fucked over by Clear Channel but Confessions still got rave reviews. But without MTV to run promotion for her, Madonna lost a lot of her connectivity with her audience and that was where her disconnect REALLY sank in.

The rise of Gaga was the final straw, since Gaga did what Beyonce, Spears, Aguillera, Lauper, Houston, etc could not do and pretty much replace her as the resident female pop culture chameleon.

ironically, going the Lennox route (all ballads, all the time) could have saved her but she doubled down on trying DESPERATELY to be the young hip "it" girl while producing some of the most god-awful narcisistic crap (Bitch I'm Madonna is so god-awful that it makes me embarassed to be a fan of hers) ever released.

And I think that even Madonna knows it, since it's been speculated that her Covid breakdown videos were all about her dealing with how fall she fell, especially since she was fully expecting to have long overdue hip replacement surgery spring 2020 then spend the rest of the year recoverying/rehabbing and not only was the surgery canceled but she had to finally start using painkillers because her hip pain had reached the point that her longstanding "no pain pills" pledge could no longer be held due to her being in utter agony and it and the liquor she was drinking and her realization that her new album was underperforming just like the last couple of ones, and the existentialism of COVID (she was stuck in a mansion without a fully stocked grocery supply because she was utterly caught unprepared for lockdown) caused her to have a complete breakdown.
not only that but lady gaga also realised when her weird act was getting old and decided to be more mature, and still be a great singer,
whereas madonna is still a whore

Seeing as how Lady Gaga is a classically trained singer, I’ve always assumed that the shit she did at the beginning of her career was basically performance art, so she could eventually go fuck off and do what she really wanted to do, which appears to be singing 40s and 50s type music (and she’s fantastic at it)

This is right. Look up pics of Gaga in 2007 and her Lollapalooza gig with Lady Starlight. Her aesthetic was NYC street walker with a heavy tan, tramp stamp and ratted black hair. She totally changed her image when she got signed to get more interest and shock value. Funnily enough it actually worked and for the next few years after everyone started dressing eccentric on red carpets, in music videos etc.

(No hate by the way, I'm a big Gaga fan)

There was a *very* brief time when it seemed like Madonna's career was taking a turn for the good. '"Evita" was a big role and at the time a lot of people felt like she was snubbed for an Oscar for best actress.

Now, in this current climate, Madonna would never be accepted to play Eva Peron. Though she could play the corpse that went missing for a couple decades.

Fun fact: Evita's corpse got so much formaldehyde and other conservant substances (so that her body could be paraded around, same deal as Abraham Lincoln) that when she was exhumed in the late 60s, she looked pretty much the same as she did at the time of death, albeit paler.
And if someone ever dug her up again for God knows what reason, she would still look better than Madonna nowadays.

Gaga was a lazy hack who ripped off Bowie & Cooper and mixed it with Marilyn Manson levels of "look at meeeee I'm so out there and unique!!!" pestering.
The only thing that saved her from going full retard is she knew eventually when to stop, or was tard wrangled into dropping the retarded "Mama Monster" shit that the LGBT ate up and become a DNC & other brands slut instead.

Madonna however, is deathly afraid of old age and death and seemingly has no tard wranglers (or they all gave up), and Drake's mouth paid the price for it. :story:

It was a pretty good movie ngl, and I hate musicals with the exception of about 2 or 3.

I'm late, sue me.

Madonna has a boyfriend younger than some of her kids. She has to suspect he’s out to use her. (He’s a backup dancer). Maybe I’m wrong and it’s true love at 63 and 27. I wonder how many 27 year old dudes here would hit on a 63 year old if she wasn’t formerly famous?

Y'all just bring mean. I think it's lovely of that young man to take his grandma out on the town like that.

Hell I remember her on talkshows joking about guys bemoaning her not being hot anymore a couple of years before she died.

"Sorry I'm not 20 anymore" is basically what she said.

On if my absolute favorite quotes from Carrie Fisher before she died was something along the lines of that, for young men, both their fondest dreams and worst nightmares involved her in a metal bikini. Lady was absolutely based about the realities of aging, polar opposite of our Madge.
