Mafia

i mean, least they bothered with some form of character development

I liked how they aged her up for the finale. Wish there was more of her.

>turn her into an unlikable cunt
>add more scenes of her being an unlikable cunt
>Tommy marries her despite her now being unlikable cunt (cause that's what happened in original game)
>she stays the same one-note unlikable cunt through the whole game
>"character development"

lmao, the only time she's not a wretched, unlikable cunt in demake is the pre-ending montage where she has 0 dialogue
less is more, especially when it comes to dogshit

wrong kind of character development i was talking about, but whatever

I recall @SiccDicc complaining that Sarah was written as a brash suffragist. Meanwhile, in the original, she only appeared blink twice and you'll miss her.
That is quite an exaggeration. Sarah is upset when a Congressman gets whacked who (in Mafia's world) was instrumental in passing suffrage. It's not played like some gay virtue signaling thing like the suffragette missions in RDR2 (kill me), it's played more like her being forced to confront, if for a moment, that her people's lifestyle not only kills, not only kills nameless mooks or unfortunates, but might actually make the world worse. I think it was a very smart scene.

May I ask what was the big deal with Sarah in the remake?

I just finished Mafia 3 after snagging the Definitive Edition Trilogy a little while back. I liked it better than I thought I would, given its reputation.

I don't have anything to add re:shitty open world design, that criticism is pretty on point. For the story, barring that DLC with Sinclair Parish, I thought it was pretty well done. The Civil Rights/Black Power was mostly background noise as part of the period piece. I enjoyed most of the characters. John Donovan especially was fantastic, and I'd love a game about him tracking down the rest of JFK's killers.

My big sticking point is that it's just an odd premise for a Mafia game. Not playing as a member of the Mafia is a hard sell in a series about exactly that. I think it could have helped this game's reception to have it as a spin-off or unrelated series in the same universe. But I suppose it wouldn't have sold as much without the recognizable brand name. Fuck AAA corpos.

Also, the game crashed right after the credits started, for like the twentieth time in my playthrough. Probably the most crashes I've dealt with in a AAA console game in ages.

It's not played like some gay virtue signaling thing
It's a plotpoint that was added to the remake explicitly so that the character rewritten into an obnoxious cunt can talk about mah wymnz right to vote in a scene that didn't exist in the original game.

It's as gay a virtue signal as it gets.

Did you somehow miss me saying she was an obnoxious cunt?

I DID miss the part where you elaborated your claim. She appears in what, a few cutscenes at that? IMO, I found Paulie to be obnoxious. His Mickey Mouse voice and schemes is tedious.

Yeah, remake Paulie was shit too, and his voice acting was fucking awful. Cheers.
My fav scene was the one where he was simping for her saying she knows more about the Mafia than members of the Mafia.
Which was the writer telling you that she was heckin chungus amazing, reinforcing her being an obnoxious cunt written by and for twats.

Regardless of your opinions on Mafia III, it's legacy will always be that of an autistic guy shitting his pants while his mom yells at him.
Imagine shitting yourself to play Mafia III. Awkward doesn't begin to describe that. Was he a streamer or something?

Joe is a sociopathic boor and I'd be happier if he was dead
In the base game of Mafia 2 he isn't portrayed very well. He is sort of charming in that Mafia way, but he is pretty much the direct cause of every last nickle of suffering Vito endures and the game makes that very obvious. He is the one who gets Vito arrested and sent to war, he is the one who gets Vito involved in drugs, and he is the one who pisses off the triads by killing their boss. He also heavily considered wacking Vito at the end of the game.

The game makes it pretty clear he is awful and even right at the end it looks like Vito kind of accepts that Joe getting wacked is something that needs to happen.

Then the DLC happens and he is a parody of himself and 3 makes it seem like Vito pretty much wanted to slob the guy's knob.

They turned her from a normal female character with a normal personality given the time period into a 21st century ideal of a stunning and brave queen. Gave her the Mario movie Peach treatment. There isn't even any relevant explanation in the story for why she became a boss bitch, she just is because fuck you, wamyn were always stronk.
I do appreciate that she is given more screentime at least, she's a very important character and even in the old game she was a strong influence on Tom's behavior and motivations. Precisely for that reason she didn't need to become this stronkwoman caricature in the first place. We just didn't see into their relationship very much which was a shame.

Now, she isn't the only character that was made worse in the remake. New Paulie is a psycho cunt, which isn't entirely out of character for him given his troubled nature, but his charming friendly side, which was very prominent in the old game, is hardly to be seen in the remake. He's just a callous prick most of the time. In the old game, 95% of the time you'd be interacting with a 'good' Paulie, and you'd mostly be hearing about the 'bad' Paulie from bits of Tom's narration or dialogue with other characters. Only in a very select few scenes would you see Paulie acting cruel, which is supposed to create this conflict of perception about his character. I always thought that was an example of really good writing. He's a character whom you really want to like, but as the story progresses it gives you more and more reasons not to.

In fact I could give this criticism to many characters in the remake. The old game relied a lot more on dialogue to convey details about the characters' personalities and behavior, which left you to draw your own conclusions on a lot of things. That's exactly how things work in real life too, you can't just switch to another person's POV to see everything they're doing and thinking. As a result the entire cast, or at least the more prominent story characters, felt very human and with depth. The remake doesn't really give a fuck, it just shows you everything and leaves few questions unanswered. Which becomes a larger problem because it isn't very consistent.

Yeah I love this game if you couldn't tell. <3 Now I wanna replay it.

Bonus: a video of the director of the original game commenting on the remake's ending, with subtitles (contains spoilers obviously, for Mafia 1 and 2)

Remake Paulie never came across that way to me, he came across more like a character you're supposed to pity because he quite literally has nothing going on outside of the life and even then he can't really handle the life either (which once again leads to some schizophrenic writing and characterization just like Tommy's which I've described in my previous post). In that aspect he reminds me of Paulie Walnuts, where it's often shown that outside of being a gangster he pretty much has nothing, no wife or family of his own and no real hobbies or anything like that either, the difference being that Sopranos Paulie doesn't have any regrets about doing any of that heinous gangster shit unlike Remake Paulie. Though with that Shrek-like face and Mickey Mouse voice I'm not surprised Remake Paulie can't get a wife.

Yeah but old Paulie had this exact same backstory going on. There were dialogues with Frank and Sarah who said this about him, even some scenes with Paulie himself complaining about how empty his life is and how tired he is of his existence being centered around the mob family. I'm glad this isn't lost in the remake because it's the centerpiece of his character but it's all that's really left of him, which is a waste. His resulting behavior is totally different, one-dimensional and generally shitty.

I felt pity towards him in the original because I liked him but knew he was a deeply troubled man. In the remake I still know that's the case but he's such a cunt I want to punch him.

Can watching the footage of OG Mafia give an idea of its story? I've never played the original; I cannot prove or disprove the character differences between the two.

You can watch all the cutscenes as a sort of movie. You'll be missing out on some ingame dialogue that takes place while driving or walking during missions, but it should give you a decent picture of the differences.
The English dub in the original kinda sucks but what can ya do.

Edit: what the fuck, that one had the music cut out?! Travesty. Linked a different video that has music. Thumbnail shows Vito for some stupid reason but it's Mafia 1.
