I dunno I use a banding creature in my Gideon Tribal EDH deck and..after looking up the rules on it it was super simple.
Also Mutate is fucking garbage just as an FYI, and Maro isn't even going to talk about Mutate in "State of design" he will just jerk himself off about DIVERSITY! because the game has been absolute trash since they did away with the 3 set blocks.
Mutate is lucky to have been introduced in the same set with companions. The only interesting idea of mutate is 'upgrading' a creature's stats and combining abilities - bumping up invisible stalker and giving him 'draw a card when you slap someone' is sweet! ...but, uh. Auras do that already. Oh, well, I guess if he dies while I'm casting the spell, I still get the... baseline creature? Like, I don't know, Bestow? Except 20x more confusing and 100x more parasitic with that 'whenever ~ mutates'.
I don't mind mechanics that take an assload of rules to explain, but I'd prefer it be for shit that's actually INTERESTING as opposed to lazy horseshit. Especially after, by Nyx, they had gotten bestow down - and that C19 commander with bestow is just an awesome design for a card.
I get this weird feeling that the game's design seems to go into phases of people with real ideas making awesome formats, and then Maro (or whoever he simps for) introducing their retarded ideas. Inn/RTR were awesome. Theros/Khans played around with a lot of ideas, some of which were big hits and other of which weren't the best thought-through, but you can appreciate. In comes BFZ/Oath, which was -atrocious-. Next up, SOI/EMN - as established above, some pretty fucking swell mechanics. Next comes the Kaladesh block, which was... eh, I liked the experimentation of vehicles and energy, but they didn't think things through enough. Amonkhet fucking sucks - afflict was such a dumb idea, deserts were ???, eternalize/embalm were creature flashback and creature flashback megamorph.
Ixalan is a middling but overall underrated little block, Dominaria is a smash hit, and the RtRtR sets are overall pretty solid. War shits the bed and has so many bad fucking ideas crammed into a single set that it's baffling, but Eldraine was (barring Oko and OUaT) genuinely really neat. Theros is pretty middling with boring mechanics and fucking Uro, and then comes Ixalan to take 'goofy monster world' and fuck it up horrendously. This team just doesn't seem to understand that their whacky and out-there mechanics generally aren't actually fun or engaging, and it's only when they go into a depressive fit about how the playerbase received them that the people working on the nice, subtle little mechanics gets to make the banger sets.
I really, really hope that the RtRtZendikar is one of those bangers.
