You'll easily be able to do a Commander deck for only a bit of that. You might even be able to find a budget Modern deck as well.

Ok, great! I was talking to someone on the phone at my local card store just now and he recommended me to buy a prebuilt commander deck which costs around 50 dollars or so. Are the prebuilt decks worth it for someone just starting the game out?

$500 to $600 could get you a good tournament Commander deck or a decent Modern deck if we're going with USD here. Most expensive part of a Commander deck is the Commander itself after all.

Some of them are actually quite good depending on the year the deck was brought out. 2016 had two of my favourite Commanders in it.

Also, $50 for one of the pre-built WotC Commander decks is actually pretty good, they tend to go up in value because of the cards in them and the Commander.

The whole MTGHeadquaters debacle was hilarious.

Since standard rotation has just hit I'm about to get into mtg in a big way. I'm really looking forward to playing a tcg competitively again.

Honestly I'd just play Modern IMO, the decks are pricey but you'll spend a lot less in the long run not having to buy a new deck every 6 months.

Also, being able to drift away from the game for a while but still having a relevant deck on hand for when you get back into it is nice.

Sorry for reviving an old thread. as kid I played a lot of trading card games. Growing up in the 90's nothing was more exciting for me than opening a booster pack. I collected a little bit of everything, Magic included. I am trying to pick up a new hobby to get me out of the house more these days and thinking about playing MTG again. Now that I'm older and in my early 30s I'd like to re-enter the scene again. I guess my question is, is it too late to reenter the Magic scene? I feel like beginning a collection this late, I will never catch up. Is it worth it still?

You're honestly probably about the median age for people who play. Also about 95% of the cards in ANY given set will fade into total obscurity after they rotate, so its not like starting a collection now is going to be THAT hard. If you really where serious about playing again I'd just drop about 500-600 on a modern deck and call it a day. You really only need one to enjoy the game. Also, untap.in is a good place to start. Its totally free so you can see what kinds of decks you like playing before you drop the money on a paper version.

These are really good ideas.

This is tier 1 modern deck that will set you back around $325ish, though it may not be the dominant thing with a lot of Jund and Control running around thanks to the unbannings.
Granted there are other decks near you price range too and there should be a few dropping in price thanks to the Masters 25 reprints.

Love that everybody freaked out over JtMS getting unbanned in modern when the whole time I was saying you'll be dead by the time you cast him a lot of the time. Turns out I was pretty much right.

Bloodbraid actually might end up being a problem from what I'm hearing I need to throw jund back together so I can abuse it while it's legal.

Advice getting into modern wise: Get your Fetch and Shock lands first, once you have the mana base it opens up a lot of stuff for you.

Honestly I didn't think Bloodbraid is broken so much as Jace isn't as good as people thought he would be.

You're probably right, BBE seems to be better immediate value when it hits most the time from what I've seen. But is relativity fair with all the other craziness running about.

Man, as much as I love having my mtg cards (I got into it pretty late. I found a good deal for a like a 1000 cards for $100 + buying individuals of ones I really wanted and needed, a few booster packs, one of those starter pack things with a shit ton of lands. I probably have a total of like $300 invested in the game) It's just such a scam. Because unless I am willing to pay the equivalent of my rent each month, I'll never have a competitive deck, except maybe some shitty burn deck, but where's the fun in that. I mean sure I could play pauper (which is what I did a lot), but that gets old, because all of the really interesting cards are Rares and Mythic rares and shit.
I guess there's draft too, but that has never appealed to me. Crafting an interesting deck that you have put a lot of thought into is one of the best parts of the game. Even then, that's like what $30 or $40 dollars everytime you want to go to your local neckbeard station and play?

I just find it too much of a hassle to play physical Magic. I mean having to go through every card I have, everytime I want to make a deck, having to dissemble a deck to make a new one, which can be fun, but having to spend that long to make a deck that I"ll end up playing 4 or 5 times and then having to dissemble to make another one later gets old.

I just see no reason that I should be playing physical magic when I can play Cockatrice where I actually get to keep my decks, have access to any card in the game, and even better can just straight up download other people's deck ideas from tappedout and edit them to my liking. I will say that playing with the community on there can be really daunting at first, as you are almost always going to HAVE to play some super-autistic pro-level deck to have a shot, and they get kinda impatient sometimes. It's way more fun to be playing with someone you know and are talking to while you play, instead of having to communicate through arrows and chat, but I mostly play with my wife so that's just fine with me.

Also pro-tip use Magiccards.info to search for cards while deck building in cockatrice, it's better than the built-in feature.

It makes me kinda sad because I'm not supporting the game and it's kinda endearing to have the cards in your hand. I also really like the Old Artwork too. However, I'm not too big a fan of the new art. It's okay, but nothing special.

Magic is only good if you have a large collection so you don't have to disassemble an old deck to make a new one, and only if you play it on a strictly casual basis with a few close friends. Then you can experiment with wacky stuff like a red/green ape deck and can fill your collection with cheap, older cards that are useless to tournament autists and don't bring a dime to the evil overlords at Hasbro.

I got into it around the Mercadian Masques cycle. Played pretty regularly with friends up until about the end of Saviors of Kamigawa when I started to lose interest. I've played on and off since, but it's been about 4 years since I last played and I think I'm pretty much done with it.

Blue and white combo decks were what I usually mained. Had a lot of fun, I only played with friends, never got into tourneys or hobby shop games so I avoided the exceptionals who couldn't be bothered with basic hygiene.

Kamigawa was pretty bad. Which is a shame, because the rat people were cool and ninjitsu was an okay mechanic.

TBH is there any major card game that isn't shit to play these days?

Magic literally costs a fortune and modern Yugioh is so broken that going second is considered suicidal 90% of the time because everything is designed to completely lock out your opponent from playing the game.

Maybe Pokemon hasn't gone to complete dogshit?

Pretty similar to me actually. Got into it during the Masques block, gave up after Fifth Dawn. A big part was that I was a teenager and couldn't afford to keep going. I picked it up momentarily years later to play some Commander since my friend was big on that format. If I had to play, it'd be that, but I couldn't stay interested. Overall it's just too expensive and I hate game store crowds. Total rejects.

The only card games I truly like are dead ones. Doomtown is my favorite. Others include Warhammer: Invasion, Decipher's Star Wars, and Raw Deal. Raw Deal was of especially shocking quality, because it was way more clever than a game based on professional wrestling ever ought to be.

Summoner Wars is another favorite, except I think it's still alive. It's more of a card game/board game hybrid though, I guess.

With Kamigawa everything was shit or just stupid broken. (Jitte, Divining-Top) Only a few "fair" cards from it even see play in modern. (Sakura-Tribe Elder, Pithing Needle, Lava Spike, Kataki, War's Wage)

Sure Kiki-Jiki is usually an insta-kill these days but back then you'd be actually playing him more for value aside from the Tooth and Nail entwined to get KJ and a Darksteel Colossus to thump em for 11 then 22 the next turn.

They actually decided to push ninjas in Modern Horizons even, and a few people are messing with the idea of it in the format but with all the dumb broken shit going on in Modern now it's just a little too slow even if a couple of em are good.

The best way to get into Modern would seriously be to build you landbase over time as they reprint the shocks and fetch lands over time and they rotate out of standard. Still going to be pricey and such but it'd be how I advise doing it if you're looking to get into it and save some money at least.

When you get down to the nitty-gritty you're just playing nerd golf and you're going to pay for them nicer clubs (cards).

The only thing I'd add to this is to proxy a few decks before you buy anything and make sure you actually like how they play. No point in spending $400 on Scalding Tarns for the Blue/Red control deck to find out you hate that play style.

I'd just scroll through the top 20-30 decks on the modern section of MTG Goldfish and pick a few. Only one I'd avoid is the Hogaak Vine decks as I'm sure something in that deck will be getting banned before the end of the year.

Raw Deal was the best CCG I ever played, and I played a Hell of a lot of these stupid things. The theming and gamefeel was spot on like no other game I have ever played, and the makers of the game obviously cared about balance... which is why they stopped printing cards for RTC and Chyna. My boy Tazz got a few decent suplexes printed before the game got absolutely fucked by the name change to WWE forced all cards to be sleeved to be playable. What a tragedy.
