Only card I'm looking forward to in this set so far is Nethroi, Apex of Death. Decent card for Standard, Draft, and EDH. There better alternatives in Legacy/ Vintage, and Modern though so I don't see the price being that bad even if it's a Legendary creature and therefore will see a price increase due to that for EDH players. The "Mass Extinction" card may also be useful, but only if you feel like playing around it's ability.

Odd seeing adding creature abilities to be counters though now, my old counter deck will have fun with that.

It's always funny to watch and unskilled pilot crash and burn. Just cause a deck puts up results don't mean it's gonna make you put up results. You gotta practice with that shit and learn it inside and out.

Half the reason I was sad Mox Opal ate it in modern for the sins of Oko/Urza was that I had played Affinity (which didn't even really use affinity cards anymore, it was mostly metalcraft stuff) and knew the deck really well. Same for Hogaak and Faithless Looting, Izzet Phoenix was legit a fun deck to play and to play against if you know how to handle the fight.

If you were using some stuff like Demonic Tutor, Tolarian Academy, Sol Ring or any of the other older busted stuff I could kinda understand his complaints, but it sounds like he just sucks at the game.

The formats most people play are: Commander, Draft, Cube Draft, Standard, Pioneer, Modern, Legacy, Vintage. (Good luck on finding anybody to play the last two with IRL $$$)

Card prices are tanking too right now, wouldn't be a bad time to grab stuff you've wanted if you got the spare cash.
I play Legacy/ Vintage, but I've also been playing since 1995. Most of the people who play the format will be those like me who've been in the game for decades.

It gives a little more design space, white and green combat tricks can now permanently give keywords.
It will also help keep track of creatures that give certain abilities from a list. Also, they'll be selling counters to keep track of stuff so it's also a monetary thing to boost sales for their Hasbro overlords. I'll probably go to etsy and get bronze printed ones.

Brick/Exert/Embalm say differently. Those could have been sold but were put in packs DFC cards were.
You don't see those as often as you see things like counters and tokens on the field. Tokens already have packs you can buy from I think Ultra Pro.

I checked out Eerie Ultimatum today, my fiancee is quite giddy with her new EDH build. Now she's looking forward to screwing me even more in our games.

Those are pretty much just life counters with creatures on them to be honest. Only weird die I've ever found handy are the ones for Tarmogoyfs.

What? I am talking about the inserts they had in packs that they had in packs in Amonkhet for the various mechanics..it was just a piece of cardboard you ripped apart that had "Brick, Exerted and Embalmed," on them.

Err no I was wrong..they actually had "brick" shapes for one

He was talking about the relic tokens by Ultra Pro.

You can tell this whole counters for abilities idea was thought up with digital on the forefront of their mind too. I mean I guess I could see UP putting something out but I doubt it'll be that great, my guess is RK Post ends up making something and selling them on his website (and at cons when they happen again) before anybody else gets on the train. He was on it with the Elk thing for Oko within a month or so.

Mind you wuflu will hold that up I wager.

I don't mean the life counter ones. Relic tokens I believe those were called. There are companies that tried to do random creature token packs and there companies like cardamajigs and aaronbmiller that exist if you want "custom" tokens. They're already going to give out counters for various abilities in the packs. It's only a matter of time before they cash in on doing either random packs of larger counters and ones not found in Ikoria or nicer looking ones.

We've already seen in Commander 2020 that abilities will be counter driven going forward so it's not just in Ikoria.

Yeah, some companies even have a contract with WotC to make them, I think Star City games had one for at least their playmats. Do they even still make playmats? I just use my custom leather ones for me and my girl.

They should, I don't see why they would discontinue their VS mats.

Yes do, they even had some plan for the events that we're shut down. You might be able to get a deal on those when they open back up.

Any one exited to for the new commanders set? I kinda want the jeskai deck for the cycling and that twinspell staff for my jeskai flashback deck, but besides that nothing seems to amazing.

That counter target instant or sorcery for free if you have your commander out is pretty rad.

They are kind of underwhelming. Wedge colors really needed some more options, and what we got doesn't add a whole lot. The Temur copy stegosaurus is the best of the lot I think(though I think the green is a bit of a drag on it, and the lack of Trample makes it's bulk potential emasculated), followed by the Sultai Hydra secondary Commander (which commits the crime of leaving out Red, I think I'd rather run Rosheen Meanderer over Zaxara for an X cost themed Commander, Jund or Grixis would of been better).

All the partners are trash as commanders, though the Sultai partners would fit in Volrath's 99. A cycle-matters deck would be cool, but the Jeskai leader doesn't leave me with a strong impression. Cycling is rarely expensive, so one free one is meh, and getting one 2/2 a turn out of cycling doesn't lead to much of a board presence. Compare that to Kadena from C19, where you get a free morph once a turn, draw off it, and can continue drawing if you can pay more, drop Ugin and Semblance anvil and you can really start digging through your deck as you amass an army of 2/2s.

The fact that each deck only has one of the "cast for free if you control your Commander spells" is criminal, especially since all 5 got three of the goad auras. They'll be back later as chase rares in the Commander booster product.

They're alright, compared to the Brawl decks though, I'd take Korvald, Alela, and Chulane over any of these, and the Knight one over all but the stegosaurus and Zaxara. So meh. They're making 71 new commanders for the booster product and I think they've burnt out a lot of ideas in this "year of monetizing Commander"

If I get one, it'll be Jeskai for Surly Badgersaur for Anje, Locust God, and the Force of Commander's Will free counter spells, and maybe to see if I can make what is left of it something I like.

I like the Temur Partner pair, Etali the primal storm is a pretty okay effect and being able to hold casting any of the non-creatures you remove at any time instead of just in the attack step is a large boost in the power of the effect.

I think I just like niche key word commanders. I might get the Sultai one if mutate ends up being good, and I agree that Jeskai cycling isn't that good. the 2/2s are bad but getting to decree of annihilation for free is pretty sweet. I wish it was in Esper that way I could you the discard mechanics from Amenket. I want to make a Convoke commander even though it probably wouldn't be that good.

I agree, my favorite commanders are ones that make otherwise unplayable cards fun (someday Level-up... Someday).

These decks feel off in color, Cycling matters should be Grixis not Jeskai, X matters should be Jund(or Gruul/not-white 4 color), not Sultai, Copy matters should be Izzet not Temur. Mardu humans is fine, as is Abzan graveyard evergreen creature keyword(Mutate is more of an after thought on that card).

Mutate is just a parasitic mechanic that shouldn't be pushed in Commander until at least two sets. All the Apex Legends are trash for Commander. You can pull it off with tribal, but keyword mechanics need a lot more depth for a decent Commander deck. Especially if most of the options were designed for pioneer era standard.
