main characters you like in video games and why.

To go from the post above: Battler Ushiromiya, despite him being a pervert that will grope any young woman with breasts.

Wild ARMs 3's Virginia Maxwell.

She's a good balance of rebellious teenager vs vulnerable leader, I think, and compliments the other 3 party members, and their quirks and personalities, well.

As the game progresses, Virginia improves and, to me, stays compelling despite being an optimistic, headstrong daddy's girl on a surface level, becoming a charming hero.

Arthur Morgan for sure, in terms of protagonists. If you fuck around in the game a lot, you spend a hell of a lot of time with him, and even when you're just riding around, Arthur's terrible singing is just charming. You can be a drunken asshole or the most dapper dan depending on your style, and he still comes off as a relatable man. I'd even go as far to say he's sensitive, but just in the right way. He's definitely one of the best modern protagonists I've played in a game that didn't feel like they ever were phoning it in. Plus, you can grow a wicked-ass beard.

But if we stretch the term of Main Character with characters that spend a significant time with you in a game without you controlling them, then it's Vernon Roche from the Witcher 2.

tumblr_pb1tc58bFh1qg5mjyo4_250.gif

He's an overall bro who helps you even if you fuck him over. Hates elves like a chad. Can destroy an entire camp by himself. Kills a dude by cutting off his balls and slitting his throat after shoving them in his mouth. I mean, what's not to love?
The third game sort of neutered him, but he still constantly helps you so he's still a bro in the end.

I like Tommy from the very first Mafia game because he's a case study on how holding onto your humanity can be extremely detrimental when you're part of a ruthless cutthroat industry. When you play as him, you notice he goes from being a poor taxi driver to shooting rival mobsters without a second thought; he only hesitates when faced with having to kill the young gang leader who harassed Sara, and even then he says he "got used to it."

When you watch a Scorcese movie, all the gangsters have their fall from grace when they come onto huge success and then start turning on each other out of paranoia. Tommy's downfall on the other hand comes from him helping other people outside Salieri's orders; he lets the hotel woman go, he helps Frank escape with his family, and he helps Paulie knock off a bank so he can have a life after. All of it comes back to bite him in the end, and chances are he could have survived and lived comfortably had he just done what the Don had told him to do.

I liked the Punisher in the old X-Box Punisher game.

He didn't run. He didn't jump or hop. He just stomped along and killed everything in sight, often with environment objects.

Probably the best Punisher I've seen.

Other than that, I liked... um... I guess that one main character from that game, you know the one, with the game and stuff.

Mario, mainly his Super Mario RPG incarnation, he's cool and funny. Sonic for nostalgia.

As far as non-cartoony characters go, Tidus from Final Fantasy X, I suppose. Guy's a real trooper even when the spoilers part is revealed. Not having a total breakdown at the revelation is lowkey impressive.

one of the more underrated main characters from the tales series is Luke fon fabre from tales of abyss

Luke is special in that he start off as a total asshole. his a noble who has been locked up in his manor for seven years and had everything given to him on a silver platter. his very immature, snobby, selfish and rude to people around him (expect his swordmaster and mother who he loves dearly). one day, he confronts an assassin who tries to kill his master and that gets him and the assassin send to the other side of the world. surpassingly, the assassin is very friendly with Luke and offers to take him back home since she feels guilty sending him across the world. immediately, Luke is hostile and treats her like dirt (but to be fair, he doesn't know her and she tried to kill one of the few people he loves) but its when you reach the first village when things get interesting. like clockwork, Luke acts rude to the locals, demanding a women to teach him how to cook, calling the peasants dirty and even takes an apple from a store and eats it without paying, saying the farmers can just make more apples anyway. Tear (the assassin) is shocked how selfish and ignorant Luke is and begins to wonder if that's because his upbringing or, there is something more to this.

what makes Luke a good character is that there is alot of depth to him. the entire game is basically him growing as person who knew nothing of the world to a decent human being. its also notable his one of the few characters in JRPG that hates killing people. the first fight he has with another human terrifies him and the moment he kills that person, it left him in total shock. you dont see that much in RPGs these days. even hours and many humans killed later, Luke never gets used to the feeling and the battle animation after fighting people ends differently if Luke gets the last kill.

i would recommend this game since it has one of the better stories in the series and people tend to ignore this one. i have not even touched on most the spoiler stuff from the game that makes lukes character even more impressive.

I like him for a lot of the same reasons I like Haseo from .hack//GU. Haseo in particular is a total cunt who has very selfish motivations for progressing early on. He just wants to get his fake internet girlfriend out of a coma and is willing to do whatever. It's really satisfying seeing him grow and change throughout the games. I really am a sucker for the "total asshole mellows out" style of protagonist.

Chris Redfield is one of the most badass protagonists in gaming. He’s like Resident Evil’s master chief or big boss. Playing as him in Village was one of the best moments in the game.

Tales of the Abyss, and Luke’s story and growth is, IMO, probably one of the best in video games. At the very least, the best in a JRPG. I admit I played it at a time in my life where I was struggling with some things, so it maybe spoke to me more than it will to some, but it’s one of the few games that really moved me on a personal level.

Seeing Luke grow from one of my most hated characters to a man I genuinely respected and admired, his journey of atonement, and the absolute shit he had to go through to get there really was awesome. It’s the only game I’ve ever played that I still refuse to spoil because I think the twists and aftermath are so good. I tried to get my best friend to play it, be he was so bad at the game that he couldn’t even get that far.

I’m willing to argue that the characters from Streets of Rage were pretty cool. They all come from different backgrounds and lifestyle, and yet the find one common goal to stop crime that’s being infiltrated and planned out by their corrupt local government in the big city.

TL;DR - they’re your underdogs’ favorite underdogs.
