Apparently high ranks are filled with cheaters :story:. One of the "named" reasons for not supporting Linux is anticheat (even though Battleye supports Linux) but as expected their anticheat measures are shit. There are games not supporting Linux but at least they use kernel level anticheats and somewhat reliable, so Marathon manages to have worst of both worlds - cheaters and cut off juicy Steam Deck users.

This was a big argument with Arc Raiders. People would say they want a PvE mode, and others would say that such a thing would defeat the point of the game. Can people really not conceive of a way to have a PvE mode that doesn't affect the economy of the extraction mode? Because I can

What people who argue against PVE modes don't understand is that I always have the option to not play PVP. It's called, "not playing your game at all." So the real question is, if I don't want to play PVP, would you rather have me buy somebody else's game?

yea I love waiting half an hour to launch into a raid because there's no available helis to take me into combat.
Peak gamplay.

I totally forgot about the helicopters but last time I played it was never a longer wait than a few minutes and I think the system adds to the immersion nicely.

But agreed thats a weird system that could be better.

Once you get to the further out areas its even worse. 30 minute wait for a 20 minute flight, to die in 30 seconds because a player is camping the LZ.

I have like 50 hours in that game and most of it was spent on a heli or waiting for one. Just a dog shit system.

At least the load times in tarkov were under 10 minutes (most of the time)

It's basically unplayable in PvP but as purely PvE it wasn't too awful for me.

Tarkov unfortunately is dogshit PvP in every other way or wants retarded money to play PvE. SPT is alright but Tarkov has so much clunkiness that Greyzone is still preferable (since they mostly fixed their broken damage system for AI where they'd eat ammo unless you hit vitals).

Sadly there just isn't a good extraction shooter for PvE that isn't either poorly supported (Grey zone), a complete autistic mess (SPT), or autistic and furry (Silverfish, honestly pretty decent).

The closest to an enjoyable PvE game is ARC but the devs stubbornly refuse to add an actual PvE mode because they know queue times for PvP would instantly become an hour+.

So, Gray Zone is currently on sale for $26 and change, worth it for someone looking into a PvE time waster after the Payday games crapped themselves out?

This was apparently one of Marathon's co-devs

And wouldn't you know it...

At this point I want Marathon to fail more because despite being out for a month, it's managed to garner a fandom of some of the most smug, obnoxious, faggots I have seen for a newly released game in a long while

The Forever winter is the closet I have played to PvE Co-op extraction shooters that you are describing that is decently fun. Unfortunately the game had an extremely rough launch and was overshadowed by its competition. But, the devs have fixed many of the performance issues despite the game still being in early access. however if you can get past the UE5 jank the game has one of the better gameplay loops of any of the PvE extraction shooters in my opinion.

I actually found the opposite to be the case. Tarkov feels great to me, but I have spent 3000+ hours in that game so it's no wonder that Grey Zone just feels off to me.

Whats crazy is I always wanted PvE tarkov, but once it dropped it just didn't feel the same. The adrenaline was gone. The risk was gone. I knew I'd walk out of every single raid in PvE and that just didn't excite me anymore.
But of course, when I came back to PvP, it was still a shit show. Truly the most abusive relationship I've ever had with a video game.

I'm not even GOOD at PvP. I fucking suck.
why on earth would you play pvp
Adrenaline addiction, mostly.
Also the feeling of fucking up some poor sap and taking all of his shit is SOOOOO GOOOOOD. Especially when he's got a juicy kit.
Or when you've got high value loot or you need something found in raid for the hideout? Raises the stakes in a way you just can't replicate in most games.
I have a fond memory of having 3 blacked limbs, out of ammo, just killed a dude, hiding in Interchange, waiting for his buddy to rush me. I called out over VOIP "If you leave your buddy's shit on the ground, I wont kill you," 100% bluffing and that mf RAN AWAY.
I fucking passed an intimidation check in Tarkov. What other game lets you do that kind of thing? Incredibly fun.

Can't get that shit in PvE.

Yeah, but Gray Zone PVP kinda sucks, and the loot on the island's not that great (basically no better than what you should be dropping in with), so the only way you're gonna get good loot is what people bring with them...which means the best way to play PVP is camp LZs. Which is what happened to you.

That Steam player count just keeps tumblin' down. While I don't think it's actually a terrible game like Concord or Highguard, Bungie made something niche that doesn't appeal to a lot of gamers. PVP extraction shooters are not everyone's favorite genre and Arc Raiders and Tarkov have that market cornered. That's a terrible bet to make for something that's supposed to be a live service money machine akin to the next Destiny.

Reminds me of all the failed "Overwatch killers" that came out in the late 10's and early 20's before Blizzard killed Overwatch itself with its incompetence.

Gray Zone plays into the PMC milsim-lite aspect of Tarkov with less bullshit and also has a dedicated PvE mode, so it constantly siphons off players of other extraction shooters that let casual players get constantly ganked by the sweatiest full time players.
they do show a sloptuber mentioning both tarkov and arc on the first promotional video in the steam store at 0:24, still it looks like it's the price of marathon without any discounts, currently it costs 26$... meanwhile marathon still 40$ because sales projections i guess.

Imagine making a universe of fucked up and cool futuro armies and then you tell the player that he needs to play as the fucking dweeb and crawl on the ground so be doesn't get atomized in half a second.
Tough shit, although, most of that community is too busy collectively jerking off to the giantess shit in the game which is fucking weird.

Marauders is practically a PVE game since nobody plays it.

This is how I feel about people who go absolutely feral at anyone who suggests adding options to soulslikes to make them easier, or a straight up easy mode. Nobody's forcing you to use it if you'd rather continue gitting gud.

ETA: To avoid further confusion, I want to clarify that what I'm specifically advocating for is things like the Stakes of Marika in Elden Ring, that make attempting the same boss over and over more efficient, or the Mimic Tear/summons if you just want to be done with it.
