I just got recommended a vlog from Marathon's official youtube of this lesbian looking ass dude telling me how he sticks clay in his piano so that has me hyped to try the game. Thanks bungie!

Is this guy genuinely trying to cosplay the Security Officer with those glasses?
What the fuck.

I completely forgot about Destiny until reading this thread and now I can't unsee it. It's like they repackaged the game in a RXBAR wrapper that's all solid colors and lists the ingredients on the front.
the thing with a super pared down aesthetic language like that is that it's communicating something semantically, it's a symbolic representation of the game world's willingness to communicate with you. In Metal Gear Solid 2 the weird visual language of Big Shell is trying to be reminiscent of Shadow Moses from the first game but it's also trying to be this fake and purposefully constructed test-dummy version of reality. making everything look like it was an industrial flat pack put together by a robot in an afternoon is communicating quite a lot of information about the plot, the world, the game's symbolism, etc.

So... why does marathon look like ikea flatpacks decorated by piet mondrian? Like, what's the artistic and symbolic purpose of the aesthetic? The rxbar type aesthetic is almost more akin to brutalism applied to typography - it's just reducing the aesthetic to pure function, no extra semiotics. a flat white carton that just says MILK. THIS IS MY WEBSITE, etc. So... what's the function that such a thing serves in the world of a marathon? What is the nugget of true form that they've achieved by whittling away all of the extraneous semiotics? That's it's just a bunch of fucking levels designed as levels and it's not even trying to pretend to be something?

What i'm getting at is that it's begging a question it's refusing to answer. It's actually legitimately bad, is what i'm saying, it's not even lazy, it's actually working against itself.

to be fair to the glasses weirdo, his synth music pops pretty good in this, its about the only thing that's truely good out of this pile.

the art style is TOO FUCKING NEON AND CLASHING, too many Azure Blue's on Pinks, Neon Purple on Acid Green, Cherry Red on Acid Green all in a single eye shot.

those sorts of popping color clashes should be rare, but its every surface, except for the white on black that thankfully break up some of this fucking vomit.

I might be retarded but I genuinely do like the art style for this game, the only thing I HEAVILY dislike is the gun models. They are terrible and look like roblox guns. Also some of the characters looked roblox like in the closed tests I played but this might've been unfinished art assets, as most of the skins (yes they had a battle pass in a closed test) look even worse on the guns.

and that's whats their biggest issue, they've basically stopped updating their cash cow to make an Extraction Shooter, its an unpopular genre especially with an older target audiences, I have the same issue with Battle Royales, Publishers will drop the genres they are good at to trend chase and give a massive middle finger to their existing playerbases the stereotypical game developer crashing out because of a game having low sales is often overblown but with Bungie its 100% true, they think Destiny players are obligated to go to Marathon and if they are unintrested then they are guilty of 2 genocides

extraction shooters allow you to use roguelike design elements in your multiplayer shooter game which is why tarkov got popular but I think modern game devs go with the korean free to play model and then wonder why their game isn't popular with western audiences

just one more raid bro I have 15 raids left in my rental m249 and the season pass will only be open for another 45 minutes before the next season starts we gotta get 10 headshot kills this round

I think the up-front buy in is going to play a big factor. I know it's still the standard for this type of game to not be F2P, but coming from the same studio as Destiny 2 I think a lot of people will be asking why they are expected to pay for one and not the other.

Especially when Destiny 2 originally cost $40 at launch; a lot of people might wait to see if Marathon also makes the haily mary transition.

Destiny isn't even F2P, it's free to taste because 90% of the cool shit is locked behind paid dlcs. Oh there's the season pass and the dungeon keys that still charges you 20 bucks, non-negotiable if you just want the one dungeon. You are expected to cough up dosh at one point and it's always sooner rather than later unfortunately.

Oh right, I'd like to see Marathon burn because I'm one of the niggers who bought the complete edition for Year of the Prophecy and I'm extremely pissed that I have to wait until the 9th of June to get *checks notes* the content we knew we were getting and some quality of life changes. Very good indeed.

Wasn't my experience. I got at least a good 30 hours out of it before I got bored. There's plenty of content to fuck around with if you're not that serious about dedicating yourself to the game.

Doesn't change the fact that you are at some point either expected to give up some dosh or fuck off because they removed the Red War, Curse of Osiris and Warmind nd the . If this were Shadowkeeps release you'd have more 40/60 split but the moment you want to go deep into voidlock with a made spam build you either need the Forsaken Pack/Beyond light depending on if you want to go the Contraverse Hold route or Nothing Manacles' way. You're not even given a kiddie's pool worth of depth you get enough to cover your feet at most.

Why didn't they just allow you to freely download and delete shit you own and want to keep? Did they run out of cash to pay for storage at their VPS?
it's their shitty engine, they literally have to repack multiple versions of the same 4K video but in different languages for some retarded reason rather than just using different language audio tracks to be played along the video.

I tried watching some new gameplay and I am utterly disgusted at the game’s aesthetic. The colors, the environments, the weapons. Just fucking hideous all around.

Marathon accidentally got the perfect opportunity to get a decent amount of players on its free weekend run. I won't be surprised if it gets more than a hundred thousand players, maybe more. Its competitors have been losing players, tarkov's lobbies aren't even being fully filled anymore. The biggest problem that marathon will face will be overall early game balance and progression, if people like the gameplay loop first that is.
