If there's one thing that really bugs me about this game, it's the story, or rather, the direction they seem to have gone with it.
(Full disclosure, I did not buy this game, I have not played it at all, nor have I really watched any gameplay of it, so I could be talking entirely out of my ass here. Please correct me if I'm wrong.)
Anyone who's played the original trilogy knows that Marathon has a pretty interesting and complicated storyline, especially for a very early FPS. The first game has you dealing with quarreling AIs and alien attacks, all while hints of an underlying story are fed to you through terminal text detailing the state of the solar system, populist/terrorist uprisings, rampancy, and hints of the true purpose of the colonization program. The second game delves more into the backstory of the various aliens, weaving in a dose of cosmic horror as well. And then the third game throws you into time-traveling, universe-hopping insanity, with the cyborg effectively ascending to a higher state of being after finding a timeline that didn't end in cosmic annihilation. Factor in all the historical and philosophical references throughout, and you have a story that is still being discussed and debated over thirty years later.
And that's what makes nu-Marathon all the more depressing. Again, I really haven't looked too deeply into what sort of story the game is giving you or how it's delivered, but just going off of the surface, the core of the story seems to be how the UESC and the corporations it contracted cut corners with the Tau Ceti colony, because, y'know, corpos bad. Haha, isn't it wacky that all the food is in pouches? Anything for a profit! Despite surface-level references to the original trilogy (most prominently Durandal's "escape will make me God" line), it doesn't seem like they're even bothering to do any kind of deeper story. And I'm not even talking about the insanity that Infinity reached, I mean not even managing to reach the level of Marathon 1's story.
Thirty fucking years for a new Marathon game, and the best they can do with the story is "haha corpos suck amirite."
