The strangest thing about Marathon to me is that it doesn't have a whole bunch of different game modes right out of the gate
Well Marathon's an extract shooter, you don't really have gamemodes in those. It's a very narrow type of experience which is why it's so confusing so much money was poured into it. It's not made to appeal to the everyman by its very nature (and it (and the same could be said of other genres) shouldn't).

I have never shit on Gael, I like Gael, I think Gael is more thematically impactful in DS3 than Miquella is in Elden Ring, however, Miquella is not a bad boss or character like you are implyin.

The other less apparent part of Messmer I love, which appeals to the Halo Chvd in me, is that he is also a reference to Cadmus and basically does Snake Kung Fu with a spear which is a blend of western and eastern aesthetics, his Simp Rellana uses twin Jians in knight armor which is also a blend of eastern and western aesthetics

Messmer is filled with self loathing for the snake inside of him and wishes his flame would extinguish and feels a lot of compassion for his men and refused to kill the one captain who saw his true nature while Miquella casts off his good natured other side in St. Trina, Messmer controls the serpent and denies his evil nature but is eventually overtaken by the serpent as Cadmus eventually became the serpent he loathed and obsessed over every night after defeating

Masterchief was Orpheus and went to the underworld to save his woman (Cortana) but the Maratroon shells are just shells for product placement for post-ironic metacorporate product placement saying HEY CORPORATIONS SUCK BUT BUY OUR $40 EPSTEINCODED MICROTRANSACTION SKIN ANYWAYS

What I see in Marathon is reminiscent of Andy Warhol's idea of aestheticism rather than the neo-midaevel/hellenic ideal of Cortana being a nude beautiful woman who guides you in destroying an ancient evil, Garish colors over pop culture showing that everything is ugly and interchangable and nothing inherently matters whatsoever and there is only corporatocracy and ironic detachment from reality and all reality is socially constructed so by our product which will be obsoleted in a year anyways goyim

latest look at achievements as a metric -
  • 97.7% of players did the tutorial run
  • 93.8% of players have died
  • 82% of players did the first cyberacme quest
  • 60.6% players completed 21 runs
  • 62.8% players exfiled 7 times
i haven't been tracking closely, but if i recall correctly those last two numbers were in 59.xx% territory a week or so ago. that to me confirms they are in a worst-case scenario that the sales data (the people her were ballparking like 800k-1million in steam sales, 200k in console sales, which . the percentage is going up, which means people are completing the achievements faster than new players are joining the game.

i am at season level 19 and have very little desire to play. okay, i can crawl around to scavenge and get contracts done so i can get VIP status so i can then get the gear to have fun 3v3 fights. okay, i'm down for that. but knowing that the wipe is coming in 2 months? fuck it. by the time i get to VIP where i need to be, it'll be may, and i'll be camping for a lot of it. so that robs me of any motivation to keep playing now with the certainty whatever i'm doing is wasted. marathon's pvp model means they really do need to wipe, but it illustrates why more a million more players feel that arc raiders respect their time. i detox from video games in december, so i didn't touch arc raiders for like 6 weeks. if that would have meant my workbenches and all my progress was gone, i would have shrugged and moved on. now i am slowly working towards the second wipe at my own pace.
For this game, you need three people specifically to team up - one or two is not enough, four is two twos and thus too many. You also need to have all three of those people skilled at military tactical mindsets and actively engaged in such.
Yeah I have one ANZAC friend who served in indoensia and taught me how to clear a room professionally. we still struggle b/c finding a third player on the same wavelength is super hard.

people keep saying this b/c trannies like the cyberpunk aesthetic. but what ppl are missing is that the aesthetic long predates them. these guys specifically were into cyberpunk in their teens and early twenties and hot babes like molly millions, shadowpunk elves, the matrix, whatever. then as they failed as men they decided to become the hot cyberpunk action girl they wanted (and still want) to fuck. this is the exact arc the wachowskis had. feel free to critique the tranny's delusional relationship to the art but it's not tranny art, don't let them have cyberpunk by defining it that way.

there are also plenty of old-school cyberpunk trannies that are more about body modification and transhumanism and don't have the agp fetish of invading women's spaces. i will say that the more i stare at shell art design is subtly , in that everyone is negro or asian coded except for the assassin, and he's an adrogynous twink that gives off buffalo bill AGP-smirk vibes. and he has these pseudo-tiefling horns going on. that character is there purely for yuri freaks to get off to, while denying any representation for the white and azn men that are going to be 90% of their playbase. it's not that big of a deal given how little time you spend staring at character faces. if this was an RPG or something it might be worth interrogating more but not a big deal in context.

All of this is made incredibly ironic because he was the one Marika forsake the most, banishing his entire Crusade and the whole area to another realm out of both hate for the Horned Ones, and loathing and fear for Him.

None of her other children even think that much of her, either obsessed with Radagon or Godfrey, or with each other, which ties into the larger narrative arc of Marika being a terrifying, horrible evil person and largely the biggest villain in the setting.

To them, Gods must be brought down to human, Hades and Hades 2 really show this, while I wouldn't say Hades 1 is a bad game, its explicitly Leftist in its trappings of its story and characters.

Leftists despise the idea of selfless heroics, Godly Gods, and vibrant beauty, among other things, and they want you to KNOW it.

I think you can tell a lot about a game's future prospects not by the playercount or by the spectators, itself, but by how much it's playerbase are obsessing about the playercount/spectators.

For example: Pokemon hardcore stans circa three years ago? Either burnt out or completely neurotic about criticism. Pokemon hardcore stans in the wake of Pokopia? Don't give a shit what anyone else thinks, they're having too much fun playing Blob the Builder or their beloved uncslop ports to the switch/2.

Marathon players have constantly been in defense mode since release, because they know that if an average person looks at marathon, they will be turned away.

I said something similar earlier, and your sentiment is correct in a vacuum; if you've got a few hundred or a thousand players kicking around then you can find games. I'd even go further and argue that the diehard autism eventually brings out the fullest potential of what the game offers for true enjoyers.

But. Movieblob-sized butt: your favorite online game in today's day and age is nothing but a means for bean counters to make money move make money move make money move. A tiny yet passionate, knowledgable, dedicated fanbase who appreciates your deep mechanics and tiniest intricacies does not put a third Lambo in the garage of the fourth summer home of a random faceless board exec. Jefferson of the shareholder board does not give a singular solitary fuck and has likely never seen your sick game outside of a powerpoint in a meeting he railed coke lines at the whole time.

The fact that this game comes from such huge money is exactly why its playercount matters. The implication being that Jefferson from the board will take your game out behind the building and execute it if it meant making the line go up a percent of a percent.

The concern about Marathon's playercount stems from the experience of D2 Crucible players, where reduced numbers could severely affect queue times, lagginess of eventual opponents, getting matched against the same teams over and over again in Trials, etc.

Unironically I love how Castlevania: Lords of Shadow depicted Lucifer in the DLC, and hated how he appeared in the sequel. He was always the greatest and most glorious of God's angels to the point he was literally named Lightbringer, almost like he was God's personal torchbearer or something, and after his fall his greatest talent is duplicity, twisting scripture to his own ends and earning the title Prince of Lies.

Like yeah, of course he's going to show up as an unassuming, unthreatening, not-quite-femboy and as opposed to some face-tearing, snarling, upset Chad with weird metal legs.
