Is it too soon to place it among the hallowed ranks of Concordlikes?

You may argue that the number of concurrent players was higher than triple digits, but Concord came with a price tag of only $500 million, while Marathon cost Sony $3.6 billion.

Marathon is not even spectacular enough to be a Concordlike at this point. It is a slow, ugly, gasping death. Fun to check in on though, sub 5k lows, that functionally means the game is unplayable outside of NA + most of EU one would assume.
Bottled lightning, return to form, having a blast, good bones, it just clicked, etc.

the streamers, who they make these games for at Bungie for some reason, are all already big mad because of SBMM and the low player count, so all they run into is other streamers and sweats, and they DO NOT play the game to have fair matches.

They enabled SBMM? From everything I was able to read/see they just have 'level based' (I assume account level? 'Season' level?). I guess if the streamers are getting sweaty matches, that really drives home that the playerbase has dropped enough to where it is just them.

It's lasted 54 days so far, about 4-5x Concord's lifespan, so unless Sony closes Bungie and axes their handful of remaining GaaS games I think at best we can consider this a Suicide Squadlike in terms of comparable failure.

It's too late.

Even disasters like High guard don't even compare. I'm not sure if there is any other piece of media that matches how poorly received Concord was. We should of never seen this in the first place, but the stars aligned, we will most likely never see this again in our life times.

There is a ranked playlist that appears to be purely SBMM, but out side of that I don't know how the match making works. Unlike people with an outside perspective, I play the game and far be it from me to confidently say how it actually works.

I think it's a culmination of Skill, level, gear, and comms. I think it takes all of this into consideration, arrives at a value and tries to match you to other teams with a similar value.

I tried smurfing on a friends account who is lvl 12, it didn't work out to say the least. Too many times do I show up with the sweat lords, with my best gear, and get immediately get rolled. Other times I show up with a free kit, with other randos who have free kits, and we wipe the lobby. I've had nights were we extract from every raid and nights where we just got our shit pushed in.

Maybe it's like tarkov where there is no matchmaking and its entirely first come first serve?

Who knows.

I do know the definitely SBMM playlist of ranked is absolute aids and not worth playing.

Casuals aren't happy, streamers aren't happy, who the fuck is this game for?
Streamers are never happy and Casuals will never be happy in a pvp game unless it's low stake with quick respawns.

This game is for people like me that want to play tarkov, but hate all the shit that makes tarkov awful to play.

I remember people on /v/ saying the same thing during the DING DONG BANNU heyday, and yet here we are, with an even bigger TORtanic on our hands.
You still dont get it...

Even if Marathon makes No money it still had gross sales.

Concord had ZERO GROSS, every copy that was sold was refunded. There is just nothing like this. No return, nothing.

Maybe it's net sales? I dont know I'm not a bean counter.

I wasn't talking about Marathon there, but referencing your argument that we'll never see a failure as big as Concord ever again, when in fact Concord is merely one more game in a long list of expensive blunders.

The history of gaming is rife with similar examples, though I do admit Concord's failure does up the ante quite a bit.

You keep acting like its just another flop. It's not.

They spent 400 million on a game with no audience and no player adoption, there was no interest in it. 25,000 copies sold and every copy purchase was refunded. It lasted 2 weeks as a live service game. This was a AAA game with first party backing. Huge advertisement campaigns, it was in the lime light, it was fully supported.

Consider how People were interested in high guard. 97,000 people tried high guard, more than Marathon. They tried it, though it was shit, and quit all in a week's time

Concord never had that, no one showed up to play that game. Sub 700 player peak. High guard was a F2P game with far less backing. There were no physical copies of this game.

Marathon is a flop, but its a flop that regularly sees 20k peak player counts two months in, again Concord only ever sold 25k copies.

Every flop you could compare to Concord has better metrics than Concord. It will not be repeated. Calling everything you don't like or every thing that is a flop Concord has caused it to lose all meaning. Were already forgetting just how monumental that gaming disaster was.

Oh wow look at mr. High and Mighty over here
Playing the game, pffff
I think nearly all of the disinformation is originating from Paul Tassi, who like most journalists are covering a topic they have zero understanding of. People who haven't played the game cant verify what this retard is spitting.

Almost below D2, holy fuck. :story:

Its a race to the bottom, my money is on D2.

Marathon did not cost Sony $3.6 Billion.

Sony bought Bungie in 2022 for $3.6 Billion, and in that time has likely had to sink another $600,000,000 into the studio just for employee costs and would have had to take on all of the advertising costs/betas/events/etc from 2022 to 2026 - which are also not cheap.

So the actual number is likely closer to $4.5 Billion, with some variance based around how much money Destiny 2 was making during that same time vs operational cost.

8 days late from posting this, but look at this retarded faggot :story:

I won’t be caught dead wearing a marathon shirt out in public.

Couldn't see any mention of it in the thread, but Marathon is now well under the top 100 on SteamDB's "Most Played on Steam By Daily Active Users" list.Screenshot_20260428_064221.png

ETA: Fucking lethal company is at 104, how embarrassing. Imagine being Bungie and seeing your AAAA extraction shooter product being beaten out by 3 year old stale streamer slop.
