This is an opinion article. Digging into it more, you find out that the "story" that's talked about never even happened. There was no son that was "accused" of rape. He was accused of assaulting a girl (non-sexually). There were videos of it and he had been told of his impending court hearing months before he told his mother.

Yes, yes they can. A relationship is an agreement between two+ alive entities. Dogs can be friends with cats, that's a relationship; humans can be friends with dogs, that's a relationship. Donkeys can be mates with Horses... that's how mules are made. Humans can be in relationships with any other human if that's what they agree upon. They can be enemies (that's a relationship of a sort), they can be friends, they can be co-workers, they can be romantically involved, they can be sex buddies, etc. If a man wants to be with another man, that's fine; if a woman wants to be with another woman, that's fine too. They are both still relationships. So yes, modern western women can be in relationships.
