Mario Bros. Set to Jump to Big Screen in Movie Deal with Universal’s Illumination - Paging Movie Bob, Paging Movie Bob...

Depends on how far they want to get into the cast. I feel like with Waluigi, it becomes inexcusable to not have Daisy as well, which runs into the issue of her and Peach now having the same personality.

Yoshi, Jr, Wario and Rosalina are all pretty self contained and had major appearances compared to Waluigi and Daisy (for the most part).
But the thing is, who will voice Wario (aside from Pedro Pascal), Waluigi, Daisy, Yoshi, Birdo or Jr.? I guess we'll wait til when Nintendo Direct announces

Yoshi's Island seems like a logical next step, unless they want to go quirky and adapt Super Mario Bros 2 USA with Wart and Subcon.
You know, they could do both and also add in Mario World, the Wario games and Sunshine as plot points just to introduce Yoshi, Birdo, Daisy, Wario and Waluigi
They could adapt Super Mario RPG and have Geno in it
A man can dream

The fans want Danny Devito, so it will probably be Ryan Reynolds as Wario.

As for Waluigi, William Defoe is always the selected actor.

Bowser Jr doesn’t seem definitive for most people, but Trey Parker was a funny suggestion.

Yoshi is also a bit up in the air, but Ryan Gosling was a funny suggestion. Personally, save Ryan for Funky Kong in the DK movie. Otherwise, The Rock or Vin Diesel.

Daisy has been pinned for a variety of actresses with Emma Stone being a big one, along with Wigg.

Rosalina is like Daisy, been seeing Margot Robbie and Kristen Bell.

Birdo - Caitlyn Jenner:lit:

We all know Yoshi will be in the sequel, but who’s else are they going to throw in.
Its time.

Also lol at anyone believing they're going to adapt a specific story from the Mario canon. The movie is going to be a series of set pieces tenuously connected by some vacuous plot like "Bowser creates evil clones of Mario and Luigi who wreak havoc in the Mushroom Kingdom."

A thought, did Square Enix Spirits Within makes the entire gaming industry wary of making in-house films?
Here are my thoughts:

Square fucked up. They spent way too much money on an adult animated movie written by Japanese people. Yes, the movie looked amazing for the time. But Americans don't watch adult cartoons in theaters, and typical nonsensical jap writing ensured that the movie had no chance of overcoming that stigma. Square needed the American box office to recoup its budget. But it was never, ever going to be anything but a wet fart over here.

Did it scare other companies from making films inhouse? Probably not. I think most companies realize that big budget adult animated movies are guaranteed losers, and focused on either trying to license live-action adaptations or kept to lower budget direct-to-dvd alternatives.

The problem with that movie as I said in another thread: too much talking. There should have been enough action to balance it out, all that exposition isn't endearing anyone. The people who worked on it had no clue on film making, they should have left the directorial duties to a director.

The sad fact about this is that the media industry, especially in the western animation field, and even normies themselves do not take the idea of animation seriously and still act as if they're still for children, which explains why most animated products are made for children

Bit of crossposting, but would it have saved Square if they released a Final Fantasy Unlimited movie at the same time to appeal to kids?
I mean this was technically for kids.

They announced a sequel to be released April 3rd, 2026 an hour ago.
Optimistic, but I would love if the sequel did a special nod to Super Mario RPG or the Mario & Luigi games from the Nintendo DS era.

If they can make a Mario Movie sequel that’s based on RPG elements, it could actually change the dynamic of the first one and even make it better than the original.

Geno won't ever show up in the movies.

Willem Dafoe sounds like a good choice, but I think my other pick would be Edward Norton as Waluigi

Ironically, Trey Parker could pull it off as Bowser Jr., though I think Mike Judge and Seth MacFarlane as also wild cards
Yoshi is also a bit up in the air, but Ryan Gosling was a funny suggestion. Personally, save Ryan for Funky Kong in the DK movie. Otherwise, The Rock or Vin Diesel.
Idris Elba as Yoshi is also a funny suggestion for me, seeing as how he got to voice Knuckles in Sonic 2 and upcoming 3 and titular Paramount+ series, and since then having Idris Elba in a movie has become somewhat of a meme for 4chan's /tv/ boards

I don't think that, even in the past, Square would've had the balls to even release it in the west at the same time as Spirits Within

Or, if they wanted to stick to the whole "girlboss" shtick, have both Luigi AND Peach be kidnapped, and have Mario, Toad and Daisy go on an adventure instead. Both Mario and Daisy would have something to prove - Mario turning from "regular" Mario to "super" Mario, Daisy from being the second-fiddle "literally who?" princess to someone who actually is proven to have the qualities to rule. And Luigi can hatch up a scheme with Peach to get out of Bowser's prison for both of them to get a change to shine as well. But what do I know? I'm not Miyamoto or Meledandri.
Some new concept art for the movie was revealed, and....

Well well well. Someone at Illumination was thinking along the same lines.
