Mario Bros. Set to Jump to Big Screen in Movie Deal with Universal’s Illumination - Paging Movie Bob, Paging Movie Bob...

I finally got to watch the movie earlier today, and I enjoyed it. Is it perfect? No, it has its flaws, but Lord knows there's worst movies out there. Would gladly watch a sequel.

Peach being out of character was kind of annoying, but it could have been worse, and after a while I got used to it.

If there was one thing I'd change about the movie, I would have replaced Seth Rogen with John Cena. I watched Ferdinand a few weeks ago (another flick I liked), and Cena did a good job as the titular character, and I think he would have been a better fit for DK. Also just not a fan of Seth Rogen.

Also on the topic of Illumination I enjoyed Sing 2. There, I said it.

I finally saw it a few days ago. It wasn't as bad I thought. Obviously "girlboss Peach" is a major problem but it was also the pacing. It was 90 minutes but felt a lot longer, yet it felt way too compressed in parts. I suspect that the script was hacked to pieces at some point.

- First, Spike, what was his point? It's a reference to Wrecking Crew but no one remembers him, and his relevance in the plot is totally worthless. Also he looked like Baked Alaska.
- What's the story of the underground labyrinth? The 1993 movie at least explained that it was some portal leftover from a timeline/dimension split from the age of the dinosaurs, or something.
- There was some effort at some heartfelt conversation about DK and Mario trying to please their fathers, but this was so poorly developed it might not have happened.
- Wouldn't injuring Bowser again cause him revert to normal as is explained by the movies' own logic?
- No reference to my boy Wario. :(

I think it would've better off as an adaptation of the "Super Mario Adventures" comic serialized in Nintendo Power, where Peach does do something and manage to escape herself, while Mario ends up being captured, but in the end it's the Brothers who manage to save the princess. Yeah, Luigi shows up when Bowser attacks Brooklyn, but he needed more action in the movie.

The whole movie was poorly developed. There wasn't a story beat in the film that wasn't rushed to the point of senselessness.

I get that its a kid's movie and kids don't care as long as there's gags and bright flashing colors, but no one over the age of 9 should have enjoyed this movie.

Except for Kranky Kong. He was a delight.

It's a shame that the actor who voiced him doesn't match well and is just obvious miscasting. If they've gotten someone else to voice him, like someone who knows how to act, well, cranky, then he would've been the best part of the movie, but it's only just Charlie Day and Jack Black as Luigi and Bowser, respectively.

just saw it. it was a lighthearted kids movie. the hero journey, boy meets girl etc. Peach was not as insufferable as i thought she be. she had plenty of cool moments without feeling like she's stealing all of Mario's thunder. i just wish there was more Luagi but a second movie can fix that.
I'm hoping the sequel improves Luigi as a character as well. But I still wish they use Yoshi, Birdo, Wario, Daisy and even Wart the Frog in the sequel.

Out of curiosity, I looked up the DVD to see if there were any special features or anything on it.

All of it got uploaded on Youtube so there's no reason to have that as a selling point (and all that's there is this bland reel of the cast talking about what happened in the movie)

Man....remember when DVD's had content that made the physical copy worth getting? Deleted scenes, commentary over the film, Outtakes....I miss those.

Nobody wants to be the connoisseur of what they like, it seems.

I've been on a Mario binge lately so I finally watched this movie. I went in pretty much spoiler-free. Hold A and press start to continue this thread in the world where it died.

A lot of the nostalgia bait worked, especially in the first act. Some of the references had me grinning ear to ear, and I know I must have missed others. (Nostalgia bait is now a legitimate genre, and it must be judged on its own terms.) I was delighted they went back to the 1980s origin story; no storks, no cartoonish Italian accent, just a blue-collar small business owner in the city. We even got the Super Mario Bros. Super Show rap back. But the Brooklyn sequence went on a bit too long. If there was a point to the angry dog episode, I missed it. You can establish the brothers are down on their luck without a lengthy slapstick scene. Maybe it was to demonstrate the intolerability of the mundane world, that even the most simple tasks can become fraught with danger and frustration, to justify the ease with which they transition into the madness of the Mushroom World. Or maybe it was to make the kids laugh.

Things get a little off the rails when the Mushroom Kingdom is introduced. It tries to be "real," but also depends on video game logic and jargon like "power-ups" that happen to exist around the world. Even the SMB manual tried to give an explanation for the existence of power-ups and why they are found in blocks. Toad is obnoxious. He's not funny. Every time I saw Toad, I wanted him to go away. Princess Toadstool (I'm still in an 80s mood) is a generic heroine, which isn't an improvement over the generic damsel. She never doubts herself or faces serious adversity; even her surrender to Bowser is feigned. Bowser was okay. He usually seemed a little off model, like his head was too small for his body, but maybe it was a perspective thing. His mixture of sadism, pathos, and awful singing didn't work for me, but I got what they were going for and see how it might appeal to others. Mario, though, is mostly unnecessary in his own movie. He's a burden to the princess and delays her journey by days; though he recruits the Kong Army, they are immediately lost on Rainbow Road and that whole side plot becomes largely irrelevant; he doesn't stop the wedding; his only contribution to the Mushroom Kingdom story is redirecting the nuclear Bullet Bill toward Brooklyn. While New York is lamentably not nuked, this does bring about the Koopa incursion that Mario repels. He creates a disaster, fixes it, and is recognized as a hero by a populace that doesn't know he caused it in the first place.

A lot of the little things still worked. But I don't think we need another quite like this one. We'll get another one exactly like it.

And I have no idea what the glowing blue nihilist thing was, but I want to play that game now.

@Standardized Profile I had the same feelings as you. Mario didn't really feel like the protagonist or the hero of the movie. I think they crammed a little too much into one movie that Mario himself got lost in everything. It was fun and cute and I enjoyed it, but it wasn't OMG THIS IS THE MARIO MOVIE WE'VE BEEN WAITING FOR!!!

We all know Yoshi will be in the sequel, but who’s else are they going to throw in.

I am going to take a wild guess and say Bowser Jr and The Koopalings appear. It would make for a good follow up to have Jr get revenge for his papa. They could probably even do the Mama Peach story from Sunshine.

If not Jr/Bowser, my bet is on Wario. He feels too major to leave out.

Galaxy is likely reserved for a 3rd installment given the scope. Doubt we will see Rosalina.

If Wario is going to be in the new movie (which I know they will), I also think Waluigi should be in it. Birdo is gonna be my secondary pick

Depends on how far they want to get into the cast. I feel like with Waluigi, it becomes inexcusable to not have Daisy as well, which runs into the issue of her and Peach now having the same personality.

Yoshi, Jr, Wario and Rosalina are all pretty self contained and had major appearances compared to Waluigi and Daisy (for the most part).
