Matt's problem is simple. When he let his creation be parodied to hell and back initially, he didn't really care too much, but when it became the mascot of everything he was ideologically opposed to, he lost his shit and tried to plug the hole in the dam with his finger when it had already burst.

And now he's just throwing a massive tantrum because he didn't think this through years ago and is still in pissed off mode, so the hypocrisy is something he's quite blind to at the moment.

I am pretty sure that 90% of him being salty comes from the fact, that he didn't make a lot of money by selling Pepe-T-Shirts and merch. It is always something like that.

It's inevitable that the left will eventually turn on Matt, like it has all of it's white cis dude allies, and it's going to be an especially vicious and unrelenting attack because he has the sin of creating Pepe. Just like his creation, he's going to be made a scapegoat, only instead of rising from the ashes to become immortalized as a glorious symbol of the alt-right like Pepe has, he's going to be abused by angry dangerhairs until he's bullied into suicide.
